Something curious happened.
Playing as Arabs. The Ottomans send a worker and settler unprotected into an area I want for myself. So I try to block its path with two scouts, but he still persists in working his way around them. Then suddenly a barbarian camp pops up with two warriors.

The curious thing is that while the settler turns back and flees the threatening barbarians the worker commits suicide. Is this a bug?

I know that the AI will dispand workers before they get into the hand of the enemy, i.e. when they capture your workers, but I have not seen this with retreat/suicide.

There has been a similar thread in the General Discussions forum.
Actually, the AI disbands its workers if it feels it can't protect them or bring them back to its own territory, rather than letting them fall into enemy hands.
As for the settler, it is a more valuable unit, so i guess the AI still attempts to make it run away.
No bug to that.

The only time I've seen the AI keep workers they captured from my Civ is when the worker was near the point where our borders were touching. All the other times the worker vanishes.

Of course, I tend to obliterate whatever military they have near my borders after that point.

A silly thing happened in a game last night.

The AI sends a worker into my territory. We were already connected by road, but the AI insisted on building its own road in my territory. I realize after a few tiles, the worker is making a straight line from my border city to an unconnected iron tile in the middle of my territory. While the AI worker was still on the way, my cultural border expanded and claimed the iron. The same turn, or maybe the next, the AI declared war on me, and I heard an "Ouhmph", and saw a dead worker.

Now a I understand it killed himself.
