ALC Game #22 Pre-Game Show: Playing as Saladin

Did you not get r_rolo1 to generate you a start?

Random thought: Camel Archers should get a strength bonus against mounted units. Horses tend to have a strong aversion to camels, probably because they can't stand the smell. Mod anyone?

This may turn out to be one of my favorite ALCs. I have always wanted to see the religious tech path used to achieve violent victory. Dare I say it's a much easier path to Liberalism for some leaders than the other ways.

We're working on it. I'm being picky; I didn't like the first 3 starts he sent me. I'm sure it feels to r_rolo1 like we're married or something.

Oooh, that's cheating, you big wuss. People will talk about you being a big lame girly cop-out you know.

Three rerolls? Are you a big lame girly cop-out or what, Sisiutil?
:mischief:
 I rejected them because they were too good for my last Emperor game. One had like 4 or 5 seafood, one had gold, the other gems.

Yeah yeah, we believe you, girly-man ;)

#1 is a GP farm if I ever saw one, #2 is too overpowered to even talk about (riverside gold, 3 clams, and I'm on a plains hill!?!), and #3, while it's a coastal start without seafood, still has those riverside gems to power through the early techs.

I'm looking for something a little more challenging to prove I'm ready to move on to Immortal once this game is over.

Nevertheless, if any of you would like to play one of these starts (the 2nd one does look like it would be a fun romp if not exactly a challenge), here they are.

Sorry for questioning your sex/sexuality.

Take Wang out immediately! (I'm starting to sound like your wife now, LOL).

That second start is just funny

Actually, the first looks quite reasonable to me. The fish aren't coastal and it looks like there is southern tundra and little land. It would be a great GP farm ;)

Edit: Actually the 3rd start may not be too strong either. The rice is not irrigated (for a fairly weak food special tile) and you are coastal without seafood.

That second start is epic.

About AIs valuing feudalism: you'd think you could trade with it, but AIs have often partially teched it, reducing its value, or simply lack other techs. Also, it's more expensive than monarcy/mathematics/code of laws/metal casting, so you'll be losing out on any trades.

So...

Let's discuss where Sisutil would have moved the Warrior had he played either of these three games!! :D

Start 1 move warrior SW duh. There's tundra and it looks like the peninsula ends, so it's not worth exploring. Settle in place for sure.

Start 2 move warrior onto gold, probably settle in place again due to plains hills.

Start 3 I'd consider moving settler 1 SE, although it depends a lot what that southern body of water is (inland or not). Move warrior onto gems to figure it out.

Starts 1 and 2 are definitely very strong just from the capital, but start 3 seems more or less equitable. It'll depend on how good or bad the rest of the map nearby is. I don't agree that that map is a foregone conclusion or too easy to be worth the trouble, even with gems in the capital BFC. The rest of the settlement targets could be dogs.

Start 2- I'd go 1W, personally.

Never understood you guys and the plains hill thing. You lose out on 2 hammers!

Gah! Sisiutil, you sad bag full of middle age crisis, look what you just have done!

CF members project some resemblance to wives that can spend over nine thousand hours or two eternities just to find a proper clothing for them...

Seriously, though ;)

For Saladin... have you ever considered a war where you build some fort improvement over the border and then do as much havoc possible, then when trouble strikes, you quickly run away to this Fort filled with Archers or Longbowmen or Riflemen?

Consider this... a lot of cash from religions, mucho deficit from all the cottages, and you make enemy waaaaaaghhh (to use a Donald Duck term).
And Knights - given their increased flanking when they are an Arabian unique unit - seem to do fairly with this strat.

Hm.

BTW, I had a wacky image in my head - Sisiutil finally finds an ideal start for his ALC. He seeks knowledge from the wise words of his colleagues. After days transform to weeks, he finally concludes with settling at the recommended position...

...only to be defeated by an Archer barbarian event bug or finding out that the start is isolated. ;)
