ALC Game #24: Hammurabi/Babylon

At what point do you turn the tech slider to 0% and begin building a bazillion tanks, artillery and naval power? Do you need anymore military tech's? I'd be interested to hear what others have to say on this. It seems at this stage of the game the military Sis has access to is adequate to acheive a domination victory. Am I correct on this?

Also, take Justy's capitualtion now. In your posts you said his eastern navy was giving you fits, sinking several of your ships. Well, capitualte him and let him turn his butt-kickin navy against your future targets.

Sis has rached the stage of the game where I usually stop playing and start a new game. It is just going through the motions at this point. Especially with the new lower capitulation thresholds.

I finished my own shadow game, so I can (finally) post a comment here!

Once again, Sisiutil shows himself as a late-game player, only really attacking seriously after rifles (not counting the early rush). So no, I don't see why he should start a new game. In fact, I can still see some AI launching a cultural or space race victory, so it's no victory yet.

As for "what did I think he should have done", I don't know. Our early choices differed so much, our late-game situations were totally different. All I can say is, he might not have enough time for domination, so he might want to stop warring and try something else.

You can easily get rid of UN resolutions: just raze the city it's built in. :D So yeah, take Justinian as a vassal, and go kill Hannibal. Frankly there's nothing more you need now, not his wonders, not more cities, just land to get you over the domination limit.

Are you sure about this? I just played a game where I was running a specialist economy and the UN proposed universal suffrage. I was about to invade the UN holder anyway, so instead of voting never I voted no and lost the vote. My research was cut almost in half, which annoyed me, so I invaded and razed the UN, burning the vile building to the ground. Much to my dismay, as my troops stood over the smoking ashes of what was the UN even several turns later I still could not change my civic back to rep.

Could this be due to the 10 turn limit between civics changes? Otherwise, maybe you can't change back once a UN resolution has been approved. Even if the UN no longer exists.

I would have to say that isn't true. I've fought plenty of classical and medieval-era wars in this series. To cite a recent example, the war against the Aztecs in the Lincoln ALC game--the war which turned that particular game around--was mostly fought with medieval units, and prior to that, I had early-rushed Huayna; I fought no industrial or modern-era wars in that game. The timing in this particular game, in contrast, just didn't lend itself to a war in that era.

If I appear to be a "late-game player", it may be for the reason that CivCorpse mentioned--that in the ALCs I play to the bitter end, past the point where a lot of other players might have abandoned the game not because they were going to lose, but, ironically, because they were almost certain to win.

syl: Come on, give him a chance. As you said, you both played the game differently, and your late game set-ups were different. Ergo, Sistul's game is different then yours, and will require a different strategy. Seems like it's late-game warfare this time around.

Still, if an AI steals this victory, that would be flippin' :smoke: of an end there.

No matter what they do, "the bitter end" can be a real pain in the ass in this game. Back in the day of Civ II, I found the bitter end to go really quickly, so it wasn't so bad. All I needed was railroads and howitzers, and entire continents would fall in three turns. Now, modern war is hell (mostly on my poor PC).

By the way, I've learned my best lessons about war in all era's from this series. My current game got big use out of the early rush strategies, not to mention the Kill Zara as soon as possible strategies, and now I'm taking another lesson learned here and shooting for Military Tradition much earlier than normal. I normally go for replacable parts, economics, and astronomy round this time, but from the ALC series I've learned to be aware of the military opportunities when they present themselves. In this case, I've got Sitting Bull hanging around behind city walls with longbows and Roosevelt hanging around on his own little continent falling way behind.

I learned here to use a scientist to bulb education, then used liberalism to grab nationalism, and set off to pick up Military Tradition and Gunpowder. It will take something like 14 total turns on Epic, so not too bad. It would be a lot faster, but I'm also putting 100gpt in the bank to upgrade a pile of knights that I built specifically for this purpose.

In other words, I've watched what Sis has done in these games, and am attempting to do the same thing in my games. It's also why I'm looking forward to the end of this game. I'd like to see more of the modern weapons in action now that we can't bombard from ships.

I'm nearly there in population (and spreading Sid's Sushi recently to some of my stagnant cities should help), but I've got a ways to go for land area. Which is why I'm thinking it might be good to take all of Justinian's land rather than just 50%.

You have 40%, and need another 20%, which is the size of your nearest rival (Darius).

First question that you need to answer is: what kind of victory am I after. That's going to be your mission. Then define strategy. Then tactics. Don't get distracted by anything else.
If Hannibal is getting too close to a culture win, just invade one of his top-3 cities. You have the power to do that, but in the mean time use that power towards your end goal.
No one else is close to victory, IMHO.

If you vasallize him, Justinian will have 9 cities left.

So - my sick idea - why not vasallize him, and then switch to Theocracy/Islam yourself ?
He'd be back to 'pleased' in no time and you should get a vasall you can make use of.
And those extra XP for your new, shiny units. Which would made a nice combination for a war against Hannibal - just for example, of course :D

Ah, yes, JTMacc99, I remember those Civ2 days as well. Don't forget the Spies either-- it was interesting being able to literally buy a civ off the map by subverting that last city . . .

Ahem. Kill, maim, destroy, and move on to the next game. Pardon this flashback from way back.

Capitulate him. With the new lower capitulation thresholds his 505 plus your own strength should make Memmy capiltulate after you take Paccy's 2 cities and then sweep up the peninsula to take his core cities. Then just roll over the border to take his northern neighbor, which i believe is Hannibal. The capitulation snowball just gets bigger.
The slider can be used to run culture to deal with WW and defying UN resolutions. You have every tech you need to win the game. If you find the darned christo redentor then switch to Police State, nationalism and slavery. Tell your vassal to switch out of emancipation as well. Even if he won't, there are only 5 civs left which is +5 whiners. With theatres and colosiums you can run the slider at 50% culture for +15 happiness. Or just lose the two turns of anarchy and go into police state. And just maul people with sheer numbers of barely educated troops that sign their name with an X. Let's see how cultural Hannibal feels with a muddy infantryman's boot in his @$$. I spent 4 years in the USMC infantry...there is nothing more bitter than a low ranking grunt.

:bump: 10c's

Hanna passed through two days ago. Weather's been nice since.

*waits for round*

Sorry for the delay. Modern warfare, don'cher'know. All those units to move around...

I'm also determined that this round will be the last one.

cliffhanger!
