is it worth it to buy the $4,900 alienware computers? it says is perfect for gaming, and it doesnt come with intel graphics....ive heard good about alienware for gamers, but only from them, not from their customers...i post this because i plan to continue to buy civ games but my computer now is under minimum specs, so i know in the near future it WILL be impossible to play civ and all of my other games on this.

Er, i'd buy a custom computer if I was you, granted you'd need to know how to build it. If you buy a computer from a place such as alienware, you're not only paying for the components, your paying for the brand name also.

Anyway, 4,900 is a bit much for civilization 4. It's not that intensive..

i could have sworn i sed "and all of my other games". it wouldnt be too much for, civilizations, The sims and its 50,00 expansion packs, and about 20 other games i want

Alienwares cost about twice what they should because they are called "Alienware".

(IMHO, of course).

Why are you getting snippy? I think my answer was pretty clear....THEY AREN'T WORTH IT.

I was thinkingl about doing the same thing as you,, but alianware is just too expensive, if you really want a lappy, i:m pretty sure dell makes a good gaming machine with great specs and removable 3d card for a lot cheaper. I think i might invest in a custom built machine though.

build it yourself, get it custom or get DELL XPS ive heard nothing but good on the XPS systems... anyways have fun

I like Alienware ... they're very powerful machines, built and tested so you know you're getting bang for buck. *HOWEVER* $4800 is a little over the top (read: way freaking over the top). Even I'd not pay that much, and I'm crazy with my money.

I wouldn't go with Dell or anything either, though ... typically you won't get the card you want (graphics card), and they're way too restrictive on upgrading options. Don't get me wrong, i love Dell and I've owned a lot of them ... but for my business, where top fot he line, cutting edge machines that can be fully upgraded in the future is not a requirement.

If you're comfortable building your own, go that way, otherwise find a friend who can do it.

Realistic option: Find a company that makes custom powerhouse machines and get them to build it for you, like an Alienware spin off. *BUT* I strongly recommend that you ask this forum for the specs on a "Dream Machine" first, so you know what you want and what to ask for.

And I bet you get it for less than $3,000.

i wish I had 5 grand laying around to blow on a comp :crazyeye:..... $2000 is more than enought to buy a very powerful computer

I just built my new computer yesterday:

Athlon 64 3700+
1024 MB Corsair XMS RAM
MSI Geforce 7800 GT
250 GB Hitachi SATA-II drive
Creative X-Fi extreme music
Seasonic S-12 500W PSU
Antec P-180 midi tower

Took me about 1.5 hours to put together due to the unusual design of the case. Building a system is really cool. You can choose all the perfect components for your needs and the money you are willing to spend.

CIV IV works like a charm (already worked quite well on my old computer).

Costs: 2000 Swiss Francs = 1500 USD

In the old days you saved money when you built your own computer. Nowadays this doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Supermarket chains are selling cheap computers with quality components inside. So building a system is more about choice than price.

With alienware and such stuff you pay for the name. Just look for all the components of an alienware computer on the net individually and add their cheapest price together.

DELL is crap

I have had multiple faulty batteries in laptops my company purchased through them on different occasions.. and their customer services were not very helpful for me, perhaps due to language.. but I will not buy from them ever again, for sure

I have heard good things about Alienware laptops, but have no personal experience unfortunately

I think it would be hillarious if someone with an Alienware system came on here saying they were having issues with CIV 4. I started laughing when I saw this post thinking thats what it was. I know its so improbable but thats what makes it funny. :p
Alienware looks cool though, you have to admit. I can only afford an alien sticker on my PC case though.

Sorry to hear you're disappointed with DELL. I bought an Inspiron 8600 from them.

It's graphics card failed after a few months. I must admit though that i dropped the notebook to the floor a couple of days before it failed.

However, I arranged a repair without any problems. The computer was picked up from my place, made a trip to ireland and came back 36 hours later!

They replaced the graphics card and since then it's working perfectly (1.5 years now).

Can't get better then that IMHO.
