All aboard the hype train!

I really hope they touch up the graphics a bit more before release. I'm not a fan of cartoonish, but obviously it can work (Overwatch looks nice), but that grass and water almost looks completely untextured. It's just flat green and flat blue.

When I first launched Civ V on max settings in 2010 I was absolutely blown away (not having seen any gameplay footage before release). It's still the only game that I feel has properly done realistic, colorful graphics, instead of just grey and brown.

I somewhat like the Civ VI graphics, but I can't help but feel sad that I'm not getting that same feeling again. Maybe Civ VII... :(

Also, from what we gather, there are China, Egypt, USA, presumably India (with Gandhi in the trailer) and - if samurai-looking soldiers on screenshots are actually samurai, and not just eastern-styled swordsmen - Japan in the game. What else do we expect? I think Rome and Greece are almost mandatory. Russia, England, France and Germany i presume are also safe. I am not so sure about Aztecs though. There were instances where major civs were carved out of basic game (Mongols, Babylon). What are your thoughts?

It they added the Oracle and the Stonehenge to the footage, I'd confirm Greece and England. It doesn't make sense to add a wonder from a civ that isn't playable.

Also, if they want to support real location maps, they're better add at least two civs per continent/region, it would be boggling to have an entire continent only for yourself. Perheaps Inca and Brazil in the South America, wonderig which one will make company to Teddy (didn't know americans give him this nickname).

I'd bet either Portugal or Spain as well in Europe, you can't ignore them during the Age of Discovery. And if Brazil gets in the game, I'd expect Portugal to be as well.

I'd also expect at least one civ that supports different victory and warring flavors, so at least one mounted horde civilization, like Huns or Mongols. America for diplomacy victory probably?

I don't like the new graphics, and much of it seems like a step down from community balance patch, but with some new features.

I'd really want to just include those new features on community balance patch. I may be the only one that feels that way, but it would be a better game in my view.

Firaxis are obviously stealing Warcraft 2 assets for this game. They will get sued by Blizzard.

I must be blind or something :/

In my opinion the game is absolutely gorgeous, especially the explored but unobserved tiles with that hand-drawn style. The bit exaggerated features are a bit meh, I agree, but all in all, the atmosphere feels fabulous. I wish tho there would be more unit characters per units, that two Horsemen are a bit weird :D But I guess that's what mods are for :mischief:

Yeah, i am not concerned about graphics as well. Sure, it's not realistic, but
a) Game does not need to have gorgeous and realistic graphics to be good (and it's not that bad, actually)
b) Developers explained why they chose to make it that way and i find their reasoning sound.

ciVI seems extremely similar to ciV.
The city banner seems exactly the same. City-states, 1upt, etc.

Only some core changes:
- added a culture 'tech' tree
- new civic system, card-based.
- 'suburb'/improvement system to built certain buildings on tiles
- city-state diplomacy is now based on a new "envoy" resource.
- wonders use a tile
And many 'tweaks' of current systems:
- more 'great general' support units with different bonuses.
- new UU/UA/UI/capacities for civs
- workers now have a limit in number of improvement before dying. (how to repair? same cost as a new improvement?)
- new 3D assets
- better adjacency system for tile improvement
- UI changes & evolutions
I forgot something?

It feels like a super-expansion. An appealing one.
Maybe with their "new engine" claim, multiplayer will be stable?

Some of you people are missing some great games if you only play those with great graphics...

We're not saying we don't play games unless they have realistic graphics (I love retro games, for instance), we're saying that for Civilization quasi-realistic graphics are better. Civ 5 was the crowning achievement in terms of this and we're just disappointed they decided to "fix what ain't broken" for convenience reasons.

At this point I don't mind that much but I'm just disappointed leaders have merely a lame static painting as a background (unless this is changed in the future, which I doubt).

I too don't really see what the "issue" is with the graphics.
IMHO the visual style of Civ games has never been the selling point of the franchise, it has ALWAYS been the actual PLAY that makes a game. You could easily still find enjoyment with this game if you tragically lost your sight, in the same way there are lots of chess players. (Bit of a stretch I admit but possible.)
Think about all the players that habitually play in the 'strategic' view or those that turn off unit animations. All the effort Firaxis put into the graphics and animations for some but they also made them optional because they realise many don't really care.
Actually looking at that small section of game footage, I quite like the whole feel of it and I'm sure I'll be playing it upon release.

I find the graphics nice. Another thing to note is that having less demanding graphics makes for a smoother game, unlike some games I could mention.

I think Civilization has a history of "realistic" graphics. Look at screenshots of Civilization 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Perhaps with the exception of the 3D leaders in Civ 4, which looked a bit cartoonish, Civ has always been about "realistic" graphics as opposed to what I call "bubblegum graphics" a la Warcraft (hence my joke above).

It doesn't mean Civ 6 will be a bad game. But in my opinion this new style is another break with tradition, like the hex tiles and one unit per tile were in Civ 5. I'm willing to give it a chance, but I just hope this is not the shape of things to come, where Civilization will turn into a cute and cuddly, cartoony game to appeal to a wider audience such as girls and younger players (like the Minecraft generation).
For me Civilization has always been a game of war, diplomacy, politics and science. Serious stuff. I don't want it to become a plastic plaything.

Ironically, I love Warcraft 2's graphics and it's my favorite of the franchise.

Again, each game is its own thing. I'm judging the civ series by itself, not as a generalizing "all games must be like this" thing.

I changed my mind after seeing the gameplay video. The graphics looks pretty nice, esp. if you get used to it. Yeah, it's different; yeah I expected something else in this respect; but overall it looks good enough. And there might be a lot more benefits like performance or modding posibilities. The game will be great. I can already feel it.

I really like the look of it. Makes Civ V look bland. Looks like it will run very smooth even into the late game.

I saw a Little gameplay video yesterday and I really like the idea of using tiles for wonders. This is a real cool feature, but I am not sure if it could be added to V where maps can be very tight..

Edit: I would like to see a mind blowing graphics like Anno 2070. It is still a very good Anno with good graphics. It is 2016 and I want to see a bit more than a cartoonian CIV for iPad kids.

First off I love the graphics. I have played since Civ II and don't feel like they have broken with any kind of tradition.

I think that would imply that all of the games before V were all super realistic.

Each time I play a new version of Civ be it a new version or a new mod, I expect it to be a better game than the last time I played.

I sure that just like every version of Civ we have ever played there will be some kind of flaw that everyone dislikes and the modders will eventually change the graphics and or the balance or basic game itself and we will all be happy again.

Wasn't there huge issues with the V graphics like the Rivers running the wrong way and all discolored, road networks that don't even connect if they go in more than 3 directions. Farms that crashed the game because they couldn't be removed? I believe I have read in several places where terra-forming just isn't possible in V?

If the Civ VI graphics allow all that to happen then I will be happy.

I haven't posted here in a while, but I used to do some modding work with the CEP mod. I still play Civ 5 almost every day with CEP and my own mod of CEP (dependent on CEP). I love the game the way I've got it.

The original vanilla Civ 5 was just so awful. I gave up on it after a few weeks, and it was this modding community that got me back into Civilization after I had given up on Civ 5. I'm really looking forward to Civ 6 when it comes out, but I do anticipate that there will be very likely many issues with the game that need fixing.

Is there going to be a mod for Civ 6? If so, I'd love to be a part of the team. I work as a programmer now and think I could bring a lot to the team.
