All Quiet on the Civ Front

I used to be on the testing team for Civ, so I’ve had a fair bit of contact with the Firaxis devs in the past.

IMHO, the real issue is the insane amount of analysis done behind the scenes by 2K, who are the ones who tell Firaxis what they can do.

On the one hand, having a supportive publisher is good. However, publishers can sometimes have a different vision for a game than a developer has, which can cause... issues.
Yep, absolutely. I don't know anything in this specific case but I've done volunteer work for other developers before. Publisher vs. developer is that age-old friction between shifting units and fulfilling creative ambition. It isn't always a struggle but yeah, it can be.

Updates been more frequent? Yes... YES!

I wish somebody stumbles into some hidden info like 'civ asset: set England leader = THATCHER /yes' so we get more to discuss about

It'd be hilarious if Thatcher was a new leader for England. Though I really doubt it happens :)

I've a question: If Firaxis were to release the DLL source, would they have to set up a depot for it? I would think not, but I dunno with these things. It might be as simple as copy and pasting the DLL file and uploading it?
I really have no idea. However, I'm pretty sure that ltest is not associated with a typical DLC for these reasons: (1) there is no DLC associated with the ltest depot, unlike the other new depot (the one originally named boomgoesthedynamite, now named depot test), and (2) ltest is associated with LaunchPad.exe; DLC don't get their own executable.

WillowBrook is trying to usurp Eagle Pursuit as the Holy Prophet of the Civilization Fanatics Center.

Slightly off topic: It looks like Firaxis finally announced the XCOM DLC that we detected on SteamDB many months ago. It's a free content pack for players that bought WotC.

I would be delighted if they had a similar content pack for Civ for players that have purchased expansions. Maybe an alt-leader pack.

Please, let it be so!

Ruler of Egypt who didn't lose the realm to foreign power, French leader for France, New Dynasty for China*, Non-Achaemenid leader for Persia, ruler that wasn't a figurehead for England, or just a new leader for Rome... So many choices, as long as it's not another Greek leader

*Yongle of Ming still prefered by me :P

Hmm, so maybe...

Ramses II
Louis XIV
Cao Cao
Shapur II
Henry VIII
Cicero ?

Or perhaps, more tongue-in-cheek:
Akhenaten :)
Joan of Arc (even though no one wants her) ;)
Yongle
Xerxes (yes, another Achaemenid)
Richard I (speaking French/Occitan) :D
Nero ?

In all seriousness, I doubt we’ll get second leaders for DLC civs like Persia.

"You've enjoyed two leaders for Greece in Pericles and Gorgo; You've enjoyed the Greeko leader of Egypt, Cleopatra; You've enjoyed the 'Alternative Greece' of Macedon with it's leader, Alexander. Now comes the new DLC alternative leader pack; the Greek-Cypriot-Syian Theodora as an alternative leader for Rome and the Greek Prince Philip as an alternative leader for England or Scotland!"

Honestly as much as I would want a few alt leaders I would even be more delighted if it was a mini Civ pack for those returning Civs we want that might not make the cut in this next expansion. That might be wishful thinking. Besides we're not done with Greek leaders until we get Byzantium at least.

It's interesting that they announced its existence just one week before the release date. Talk about playing things close to the vest.

At this moment civ 6 is only 500 players behind civ 5 on steam statistics (14:52 CET 29-09-2018)
Could this be because of the switch release? I found this to be strange as there is usually a much wider gap.
I just checked player numbers for V and VI for the past week, and as of Sunday, the numbers are very similar. I would guess the steam sale for VI drew in a bunch of new players? Not sure, and I'll check back later this week to see if the trend holds.

That's consistent with the trend, I think. Firaxis/2k appear to be trying out / refining a communications policy where they're shortening up the period from announcement to release, and where they're giving no advance indication when something new is coming.

The marketing team for the game company I work for is similar. I believe the big advantage is basically getting everyone excited all at once and still being excited when it dropped. As opposed to, say, R+F where we got all excited with the announcement in November, and then went on with life so that when it actually released months later, the hype had subdued.

I disagree. Firaxis released a civ video per week, complete with trivia teases and livestreams to demonstrate them. It flowed very nicely and the community was very engaged.

A "guess who" tease on Twitter, a First Look the day after, a sample of the music from each era shortly after, then the live stream later that week. That was perfect and I hope they continue that!

You forgot that Geoff started posting the "First Listen" music shortly after the first took too (starting with the Cree); I loved the evolution of the themes he put together.
