Altered maps

 do you guys actually notice stuff like that? I'm sure the non-scottish/welsh would've been completely oblivious to sentenced like that.
Perhaps, but that's because a lot of the English generally seem to equate "England" to "Britain". Compare it to a Bavarian hearing Greater Germany referred to as "Prussia-Austria" or a Catalan hearing a united Iberia referred to as "Castille-Portugal" and you might understand my position.
Will we be needing an Altered Maps 2 thread?

Dunno if that is photoshopped in but it is funny non the less.
It's not, actually, it used to be an easter egg if you tried to get transatlantic directions. I guess they figured that anyone daft enough to use Google Maps to get from New York to Paris didn't deserve their help. :p It's been removed from later versions, though, which is a pity...

So, I was trying to find what the maps TheLastOne36 posted. The proper term is cartogram. I found two altered maps in the corresponding article, and thought I'd post them.

"A cartogram depicting popular votes in the 2004 US Presidential election, in which the sizes of counties have been rescaled according to their population."

588px-EU_net_budget_2007-2013_per_capita_cartogram.png

"Cartogram showing Open Europe estimate of total European Union net budget expenditure in euros for the whole period 2007-2013 per capita, based on Eurostat 2007 population estimates (Luxembourg not shown)."

Dark red, red, and orange are net contributors (decreasing amount respectively).

Yellow, green, teal, blue, and black are net recipients (increasing amount respectively).

Gray indicates a lack of data,

Poor Sweden. It shriveled. How embarrasing.

I made my own, more realistic version.

If Belarus and Eastern Ukraine don't want to be western then they can be with Russia. The Western Belarus for sure DON'T want to be a part of Russia, and it is mostly populated by Poles anyway, so it is given to Poland. Minsk becomes a Neutral City. (Like what people want to do with Brussels). If they don't want to be a neutral city, then we split it in half give one side to Russia, the other to Poland. Continuing on with the bigger state's theme, then Lithuania get's divided. The Polish half of Lithuania along with Vilnuis becomes part of Poland, The Rest if given to Latvia. Latvia is pretty much bigger.

Ukraine is divided into 3. Russian side goes to Russia, the Side that wants to be western goes to Poland and the rest goes to an independent Ukrainian buffer state that sides with the West. I added some mild pro-russian areas along the coast to the buffer state.

England-Ireland is togather, Czech-Slovakia is as well, Hungary gains some new land, Finland-Estonia is togather, Belguim is split, Brussels is neutral city like Minsk, Moldova to Romania, Kalingrad to Poland, Macedonia to Bulgaria, Slovenia and Croatia togather, as well as half of Bosnia (although i didn't do it correctly). Serbia is with Montenegro and half of Bosnia (I did it incorrectly as well). Scandinavia togather, and i though that Iceland as part of Scandinavia would be good on Iceland's part, so i added them as well.

Swiss can stay neutral. Didn't think Germany needed any new parts. I think i added Sorbia to Poland as well...
didn't you add Luxemburg to Germany?

Is Corsica independent?

Yes i added Luxembourg to Germany and No corsica isn't independent, i did the map on Paint, and i colored in the countries before noticing the islands so some of them might be a different shade.

Seems to make sense except for Cyprus being a net contributor

I'm not really sure what budget expenditure means (at least in this context... I don't know, I seem to be unable to make sense of the map).

Spain, Belgium, and Ireland need to get it together.

^---I'm with him,

The Spaniards at least have. The real sad story here is Portugal still being a big blue blob. Spain and Portugal started out in about the same place in 1986, but Spain is now this nicely shriveled little yellow streak, while Portugal is still the same blue blob.

Here's the original context of that map, if that helps.

I don't know if this is included in the map, but I thought Belgium gets some money as compensation for the costs of hosting the European institutions.
For the rest, there are European subsidies for the former industrial areas of Wallonia (closed coal mines etc.). If Flanders has to pay for them, it's no more than fair that the EU does too ;)

Hmm interesting, Poland is fairly smaller then Czech Republic which means that we are doing pretty well. ( i assume) We might turn into something like Spain in 10 or so years.
