Alternative Map for DOC

Could you please upload this map version so i could play around with some of the resource placements in Sweden and the north? Sweden should for example have two Iron resources, as they are a important iron exporter. The copper should also be in Dalarna, as the Falu mine is Swedens biggest copper mine and has been a big source of Swedish exports.

The location of the copper is a gameplay decision, it's in Scania to give some production to Copenhagen. But I am open to additional copper and iron in Sweden.

There will be a branch with the final map I produce later on. If you want to try things out in Sweden I recommend using the map Jules Auburn uploaded, it is functionally the same for these purposes.

About Tikal - yes, sorry, I was only thinking of Guatemala City when I placed it, so 1 NE is absolutely the better place. And yes (if for some reason Tikal wasn't there anymore), Guatemala City is by far a more important city than anything in Belize (I'd go so far as to say it's the most important city in Central America, next to Panama City).

I don't think it's necessary to represent agave if not for the aspect of resource diversity - Mexico (if we go with the resource placement I suggested) will have anyway sugar and cotton, which account for the two benefits of agave (liquor and textile fibers). So adding more instances of those resources could be fine, but then that should be a question of balance. Although then the distillery benefit could only be harnessed after the conquest. I guess it's fine whichever way you prefer!

And not sure what to do about the question on cities on the coast vs the interior. Veracruz is a major city and port, it should be there most of the time. I guess the best solution would be to move Dani Baa 1W and have Veracruz 1NE. That blocks Acapulco, but it's preferable in my opinion (if we must choose between these two). If Dani Baa is destroyed, then there's room for both.

I don't really like the idea of hills giving food as a power, it's not very "Mexican". Food can be provided with resources. I would love to see something that alludes to the role of prehispanic cultures in modern Mexican society (ie, in traditions and festivals, food, language, historical sites, tourism). I was thinking "cities founded before the Spanish arrival have extra culture and gold", but that's completely out of the hands of the player (unless you start playing with the Aztecs and then switch, which I'm not sure is even possible) - it's not much fun in any case.

What I'm wondering is if it's possible to change the height map below sea level so the game automatically renders it as water. Probably not as a feature, but maybe a terrain type?

I don't think it is possible. The new terrain type will use the default heightmap. Determining which heightmap is uses is hardcoded in graphics engine the exe. You can modify the default heightmap, but then all flatland tiles will have that heightmap.

IIRC, the game doesn't renders tiles as water tiles based on the heightmap, but on the <bWater> value in the XML.

There is a post earlier in the thread made by merijn that includes the necessary changes to open the map. I will look up the link for you.

Yes, I'll file it away for later as a resource spawn.

Omg I was just playing a Mali game yesterday where I had added the uranium in Niger and aluminium in Guinea!

Be prepared to overwrite whatever resource that randomly appears there in case a mine on that spot generates one before the silver's scheduled spawn.

Feels like Iberia should get more than 1 Olives, at least 2 or even 3. I don't know about historical patterns, but today Spain is by far the largest producer and exporter of olive oil, with 45% of global production in 2010.
But where would it go? I think the overall food production is alright as it is, and removing seafood to accomodate seems wrong too.

Historically, olives are more closely associated with Greece and Italy, though I may be wrong.

Spain also exported olive oil during Roman times. I think the wheat could be removed if you're concerned with the amount of food available; I'm not aware that grain production is particularly important in Spain. The olive in Southern France could also be moved to be accessible from Catalonia.

Overall not a big deal, but it seems the same kind of wrong to me as Italy having only one wine.

This feels awfully similar to that one Konigsburg suggestion. Please tell me Konigsburg isn't viable with this map. It'd ruin the meme.

I believe it is actually the same suggestion. Konigsberg can actually co-exist with Danzig and Riga (and Vilnius, and Warsaw) as was shown in the original proposal, it's just that every city would have 1 tile in between and each would have like 6 workable tiles at best. The issue was that further enlargement was being proposed basically just so Konigsberg could thrive, when both scenarios and players would never actually place all of the above mentioned cities due to crowding.
