Alternative Map for DOC

Is it possible to move Crete 1S, it looks a bit weird being that close to Athens, plus it would properly allow a city on it.

Sarcasm aside, I do think that's a good idea, and also moving all of Africa 1S would allow less crowding in the Levant, which is one of the most important and crowded areas on the map. But that idea got shot down for this reason.

I thought the same. Also Cyprus could be a two tile island with another tile 1SW.

Also, making Crete a common city would avoid the issue of the Wine never getting improved.

Then again, it adds the issue of the city staying independent for the majority of the game since the AI never bothers to capture it.

The westernmost point of Crete is further west than Athens and the easternmost point of the Peloponnese.

Exactly, Crete's westernmost tile should be directly south of Athens.

Okay, so I gave a shot and tried to make some changes to the map, here are they.

First of all, I took a shot at the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus. And I got to say, I'm pretty satisfied with the result. I basically extended it entirely 1E, added land in the southern shore (Tabaristan) and added a space for Baku, while in the east I added the Uzboy. In the Caucasus I've only moved 1N both the western- and easternmost mountain, though I'm thinking of reverting the former to a hill.

I've also did some small changes to Central Asia, namely, moved the Aral Sea 1S and adjusted the rivers accordingly. As I've alredy said, added the Uzboy, and made the Ferghana Valley a bit more pronouced. Here though, I'm thinking of moving the Issyk-Kul lake 1E to make space for Balasagun.

Minor changes to India, mostly changed the course of some rivers, added the Doab and the Kabul, also opened another way into Tibet and the Tarim Basin.

Small changes to Persia, added Tabaristan in the north and adjusted the Alborz range accordingly, also added some minor rivers both north and south. Finally, added the bay of Hormuz, though I might rework that area.

In the Middle East I've mainly adjuested river courses, added the Dead Sea (though I'm not sure if it should really be in the map), made southern Syria a bit more hilly and added more mountains in Anatolia (should be a challenge to invade it from the east now).

So with all the question about Corsica, I went with the current map and had only Sardinia, though I'm thinking of using the island feature for Corsica there. Also went ahead and added some more tiles in Italy, moved Crete 1S as I said and adjusted the Danube.

Similarly, also adjusted the Rhine to be closer to real shape, added the Meuse, Main and Ijissel rivers, also extend the Netherlands 1N in both tiles, which in turn increases the german coast.

In Egypt I've redesigned the Nile, more along it's actual course, extended the Delta 1N, removed the mountain 1N of spawn, added a mountain in Cyrenaica, and also moved the Wheat in Sudan 1E, so now all three major cities of the area in each of the eras will be able to work it (Meroe, Atbara and Khartoum, which is now settleable btw). In the corner, I've also redesigned the coast of Lybia.

Small changes to East Africa, mostly removed some marshes, making Khartoum settleable, and expanded the Somali coast 1E.

Small adjustments in Brazil, replaced some rainforests in the northeast with normal forests, since the area is drier, also place some pines in the south (Araucaria forest) and ajusted the course of the São Fransisco river.

And finally, some small river adjustments in Spain and France.

That was it, I'll upload the map with my changes tomorrow, there's also some other areas I'm thinking of fiddling with, mainly in America..

Can you please upload and include the images here on CFC? It's annoying that you always have to click through to imgur.

It's really amusing to see Ethiopia being much smaller than France on the map, and cannot support a single city(Paris)'s worth of population.

All civs are important, but some civs are more important than others, heh?

Please make Ethiopia bigger too. Their tendency to settle multiple crappy cities one tile away from each other on the current DoC map is well-known and incredibly irritating.

I'd also like a bigger Africa (well, a bigger everything except what is already enlarged), but for Ethiopia in particular, what we should do is change those mountains into hills, and change the landscape to forested grasslands. Most of Ethiopia is quite green and fertile in real life (you can see satellite images) and, while the landscape is mountainous, those mountains occupy (and render useless) a disproportionate amount of land.

Yeah, I agree that Ethiopia is unnecessarily infertile on the current map. This also makes their game less enjoyable than it should be because you are always scraping by. I think the issue is that with the current map it is hard to place additional resources that should exist (like grains) without inadvertently strengthening Egypt or the Horn of Africa. Not sure if the region itself can be further enlarged on this map but at least we can add more grassland hills and place additional resources to represent how fertile Ethiopia actually is.

Don't know how much Africa has been changed since the first post but these are my thoughts: big advocate of improving Ethiopia on the map. Ethiopia is almost unplayable as it is so I've taken to just making 3-4 desert tiles near Somalia into plains and a few of the tiles around Aksum into grassland hills and it really makes the gameplay manageable. No need for adding resources I don't think, though I think enlarging the space would be beneficial. Sudan basically doesn't exist on the current map (not that it really needs to for gameplay) and even on this map it's still pretty tight. Somalia is improved a lot. And Tanzania is good. Sudan and West Africa, even South Africa could still use a bit more space I think.

In that case, maybe pushing all of Africa south and a bit (a tile or two) to the east would solve that.
