Alternative Timeline Experiment

From: Farrmarch
To: Albion

We're not making any promises. When the time comes we'll act accordingly, for now I suggest you quit trying to impose conditions on us and accept the deal.

From: The Highcourt of Albion
To: Farrmarch
Traditionally, you have been allies of Lornel, and now that our quarrel is at an end, there is no reason for you to bear arms against us. We see these conditions as implied in any case, brothers and sisters should not war, and much blood has been shed already. You may take this as our acceptance.

Liking where this is headed :)

Torgael's Wall
Following the Treaty of Lorenn, ending hostilities between the Alquaric kingdoms of Albion and Farrmarch, the Royal Army of Albion turned its attention to the far north, the Highlands. Albionic settlements in the Highlands, and the ancestral homes of the Highland's House, suffered greatly from Pictaelic raids. The Overlord of the Highcourt at that time, Torgael, had only just barely bargained his treaty with Farrmarch, and suffered from a great loss of popular approval for the Albion-Farrmarch War. He was not interested in a military campaign to crush the Pictaelics.

Thus, he ordered a great wall to be built. It would be a task that would span multiple generations, and be finished long after Torgael's death. However, it would cement Torgael's place as one of the most consequential Overlords in the history of Albion's Highcourt. The wall would span the length of the Highland's Border, an area that was previous to the construction of the Wall, undefended and open.

Construction began on the wall one month after Torgael's Decree, that a small percentage of all ores mined from the foothills of the north-west would go towards the construction of the wall. Torgael's Decree was adhered to, only barely, by the miners who grudgingly accepted this. Their profit was made from the gemstones and emeralds that they could barter for food and even land. Sending off valuable materials to the walls was tantamount to robbery, but the power of the Highcourt and the Houses was such that they had little choice in the matter.

Torgael's Wall would come to be garrisoned by several divisions of footmen and archers, once it was finally finished, and served to prevent and hinder Pictaelic raids for many years.

OOC: Are there horses in Quorolin? (OTL Britain)

OOC: nice update, civver. i'm really having fun with this one. will the Sirsian tribes have stats soon?

IC:

Nalam orders

spend 6 points on military
- spent to arm our soldiers with new bronze weapons and armor, increase the quality and quantity of training, and their numbers. continue with our minor military expansion. raids on the Sirsian lands could be beneficial, so do that.

spend 2 points on influence - taking full well advantage of the economic unity of the area, attempts should again be made on improving our influence within and without our territory.

spend 2 points on economy - improving the road system. our armies' movement will benefit greatly from this as well, correct?

I'm just waiting for everyone to develop writing, and people start contacting each other. Game will get very interesting.

OOC:

@Nalam - Yeah I'll be getting to that hopefully sometime today or tomorrow.

@bestshot9 - Yes your people all have the same language and can communicate.

Armok

+1 Political: The growing noble class takes control of the Governing Council, leaving its structure in place and forming a sort of Noble Republic in which each community's reigning lord or lady holds legislative power over the whole of the civilization. Local councils are permitted to continue existing, though their power is dwindling compared to that of the local noble.

+4 Military: A military tradition is formed, led by family members of ruling nobles, and an army is assembled out of the common folk. With food becoming more and more plentiful, and the population steadily growing, the concept of a permanent army is toyed with, though largely it is left to the training of militias and conscripts with only an elite few professionals (who are often related to members of the Noble Council). Begin trying to exert control over the southern ends of the waterway, by force if necessary, though most often simply demonstrating military skill and might to extort tribute by intimidation.

+1 Economy: Establish a system of tax collection and reinvestment so the nobles get their due and the common folk have some basic options for financial support.

+1 Influence: Send out younger priests and priestesses under guard to neighboring villages along the southern end of the waterway, particularly those that come under military control. Attempt to spread awareness of the gods.

+1 Culture: Build a new temple, strictly dedicated to Armok (God of Blood), in Athug-zatit. In part, this is to further the sentiments of the strength and bravery of the people, especially the military, but also to emphasize the power of the noble lineages as a right that they bear.

Lord Turim washed himself at the shore of the beautiful Euphrates, marveling as the water glistening and shimmered in the setting sun. Dozens of other men were doing likewise, will hundreds more were scattered further up the bank, erecting tents of animal hide and wood. The sounds of drilling and sparring pierced the air, yet somehow sounded distant and hidden behind the serenity of his environs. Turim felt relaxed for the first time since he left Athug-zatit.

As he walked back to his tent, he gazed further up the river, watching it snake across the land, glittering in the last bits of the Light of Enosh, lined with the green of life. Turim took note of how the fading light turned the river a sort of red, almost like blood, shimmering, almost like fire. Before him was the presence of three mighty gods, showing his path to destiny. Somewhere along Euphrates' course, it was said that the great river meets with its sister and the two become as one, venturing forth in unison toward a great sea.

Turim desperately wanted to see it all, to exert the authority of Athug-zatit over these lands, and bring greater glory to his people. As he stripped himself of his clothing, he reflected on his training, imagining all the routine motions of the spear and shield, almost like a very dangerous dance. True combat would not be like that, not quite anyway. It was a shame. He preferred the grace and fluidity of his training. Unfortunately, even sparring had showed him that war would be graceless and brutal. All for the glory of Armok, however. All worth it.

EDIT: Also, I just noticed that you left "Meditation" out of my stats. Don't want this to be forgotten!

The drill-captain marched up and down the line of soldiers. When he reached the end of the line, he shouted a command. The soldiers responded, their axes falling into the air, demonstrating the correct slashing motion of the weapon. Pleased, the captain corrected the posture of several of the soldiers, and indicated for them to drop their shield and hand-axe. Opening a wooden box nearby him, the officer began to dole out battle-axes to the soldiers.

Well, fake approximations. He ordered for the exercise to begin. The soldiers broke from their line, and spread out across the ground. Raising their wooden practice-axes above them, they began a mock battle. Laughing, some of them began speaking in Farrmarchic accents, or the low droll of the Pictaelic language.

Green recruits, these men had not yet tasted the sting of battle, nor would they in all likelihood. The war had ended, only months before they were to take the front lines. There had been mixed emotions; relief, anger, a feeling of being cheated. Many of them had hoped to prove themselves on the field of battle, but were robbed of the chance. Others felt that they had been saved by the Gods from a sure death. Whatever the case, they were now reserve, and if they were to go to battle, it would at best be a small House dispute.

Indeed, they would be lucky if it were. The provincial armies of the Houses came with estates and a claim to a House, and thus, a place in Albionic politics. In the Royal Army, the best they could hope for if they did not rise up in the ranks, was a station for eight years in the mines, or in the north. Thus, they drilled and learnt as much as they could.

At present, the ongoing exercise was implemented in the Lorenn Barracks Grounds. Beyond the small walls of the barracks rose the towers of that city, and the familial homes of many of the soldiers stationed within the barracks' walls.

Each evening, with the fall of the sun and dusk, a patrol of three would ascend a section of the city walls, and keep a silent and dark vigil throughout the night. Normally, these vigils were anything but vigilant. The need for them had long passed, since most of the indigenous nomads that resided near Lorenn had long ago been exterminated, and most believed that Lorenn would never suffer an assault from an actual military force.

Therefore, the watchmen were known to draw. In the guard-towers that were fitted at points in the walls, there were stones that had been doused in ink or dye. These paintings were not punished by the garrison officials, no one truly cared enough, but there was a general clandestine feeling about the act and despite its familiarity with the sentries, it was mostly kept secret.

Unfortunately for some of the artists, who were on duty at the time of the Albion-Farrmarch Wars, they would not be wrested from the Royal Army to serve in a House division, or as an artist for a lord or lady. Most of them in that time period, would march out with their colleagues to paint the grass red.

2 on Influence- Rapidly spread along the East coast of the island and begin large colonizing of Mao infested lands.

2 on Economy- Use of refined mountain stones as a type of currency(can I do this?); still a bartering system, but the worth of other objects are directly compared with what they call Pahrkeet. Multi-tribe effort to develop safe land and water trade routs.

1 on Society- The formation of the Kheetahr, or, merchant caste.

1 on Military- Greater favor by the religious and ruling class led to better life quality for those living within it in many tribes. Expansion of the military in most tribes.

In case I get a story out before the update:
1 on Culture- The Tuomalikanni religion binds together those following, leading to bigger tribes, and a greater sense of culture.

Maarstai Tribes
Population: 5(10,000 people)
Land Area: 0(0 km)
Military Power: 1
Economy: 3
Nationhood: 4
Technologies: Agriculture, Hunting
Spending Points: 7

Spend:

-1 point to economy, 1 point to political to set the communistic quota to a single-currency system; where instead of being paid in raw goods, tribes and individuals receive money that can be redeemed for goods; also by setting up a store system for excess goods and currency for times of need or public projects

-4 points to economy to develop the production levels of the tribes; 1 point toward agricultural improvement with the studying of crops and animals, 1 point toward the expansion of the 'industrial' workers (builders, craftsmen, etc.) by using common money toward funding new projects, 1 point toward exploring other food sources (improvements in hunting and fishing), 1 point toward exploring new natural resources (testing the differences between types of stone, minerals, spices, lumber, etc.)

-1 point in military to set up a training program were young men and women spend a short amount of time learning the basics of combat and tracking as well as a standardized language among the tribes and national traditions/stories; the best of these students will be kept as a scouting force that mainly serves as runners for messages both between the Maarstai tribes and the Maarstai and other tribes

Spoiler :
History of the Long Forgotten: Volume 1, Chapter 17.

Excerpt 24- “We’re aware of the great importance the Tuomalikani placed on lands held within their power. While it was extremely rare for tribes of this variety to war amongst themselves this early on, territory was greatly coveted among the various Klictaa.

Traditionally, the lands were seen as protected by the Tuomak caste as sort of gifts the Yansla placed upon them in their protection to prove their devotion. But the Tuomak caste never really had true influence over the Nyritoria in the same standing as the Ulitaari. So while the other castes saw the lands as owned by the ruling Tuomak, they looked to the Ulitaari to protect them as they lived on it.

Generations after the culture first developed, one Klictaa of a Southeastern tribe realized the importance of precaution when dealing with potential threats, and created what is today know as the Sharibala Strut. Stretching from the sea to the Hills of Yodorro it is the first evidence of fortifications in the area; mainly constructed of packed earth and the occasional guard post-which we believe was only tall tree’s with the Earth packed around it-it is still a rather impressive feat for these people, given their savage life style in comparison to the rest of the world.”

I don't know if this counts as long enough; I'll expand if not.

:bump: Really looking forward to this week's update. What with everyone expanding outward... Zee plot, it is sure to theekehn.

Civver, beyond writing, what technology would I research to invent a calendar for Alquaric society? I'm trying to compound a history, but I'm severely hampered by not having a system of dating yet. :(

Spend 2 points on Military: Come up with better techniques and discipline and weapons for our armies to make our soldiers superior to everyone around us.
Spend 1 point on Culture: Continue refining our culture to develop a more organized religious system and a way of tracking the movement of the stars and such, to help tell our future.
Spend 1 point on Influence: Try to convince less organized and backwards tribes to come to the Valli.

The technology will be called Calender, just like in the game. You'll get it when you get it but putting points into culture is probably the most obvious way of getting to it.

Liking everybody's orders this time around. Keep it up.

Put 4 points into the construction of a marvelous capital, to be built in present day Mobile, which will unite the cultural, religious, and economic services of our nation. I am not sure what category this falls into, so I left it open ended for you to decide (maybe split these four points among more than one category?: cultural, society, economics, and political? I just wanted a sort of capital added.)

Put 2 points into Political to continue to develop our nation's monarchy. Establish a nation-wide government system, with minor lords subordinate to the king as governors of small areas, to promote more specific economic and society advances.

Put 1 point into economics, to reform the agricultural system as outlined above.

Put 1 point into influence to expand, specifically towards the Mississippi. Annex lesser tribes with the power of our culture, economics, and society, rather than military might.
