Always War

More AI's on your landmass will help of course, but I think the bigger issue is that choking makes it too easy. A rule like "no combat units in enemy territory before 1000BC" may give you a more of a "true" AW feel.

I actually think the choking is the necessary part of AW setting. However, you can choke one and two AIs, but 3 could be very difficult. The major weakness of the map is that those 2 AIs don't have copper in capital BFC and this make the choking very successful. Otherwise, it could be a very different turnout.

I think we could die pretty ugly in setting 3, but well, never tried it.

agree with all of that

1 or 2 for me I think. Not a big fan of Pangea AW. Definitely think we can handle it, I've done it on immortal, but it's very sluggish. I'd rather play a level up with 2 landmasses.

I'd say immortal fractal everything default, see how it turns out. Or emperor in which case i like timmy's rule (no unit in ai territory before 1000 bc). Counting ais on our mass is a bit artificial i feel also since you'll know in advance how may there are spoiling some of the fun of the "unknown".

So here are the settings suggested:

1. Immortal + 5 AIs + continent
2. Emperor + 7 AIs + hemisphere with 2 continents.
3. Emperor + 6 AIs + Pangaea
4. Immortal + 6 AIs + fractal + no unit in ai territory before 1000 bc
5. Immortal + 7 AI + Fractal + Low sea level
6. Immortal + 7 AI + Global highlands + Ridgelines + Normal peaks + massive/normal continents ( creates a pangea/continents like map, with lots of mountain ridges with fertile valleys in between

Any the vote:

Duckweed: 1 or 2
UNGY: 2
Rusten: 1 or 2, or 4?
Dirk: 4
r_rolo1: 5 or 6 or 3

Edit:
Multiple choice will be accepted. So does the revote due to new choices added.

Edit:

We're going to play a common start here, but not something like (super capital/praet/support from warrior barb/a good choking point in king of the hill thread. Even with that, I haven't seen anyone actually won that game. I consider myself lost since I loaded 2 or 3 times due to strategic mistakes. Even getting destroyer in 1500ish AD does not mean a possible win. Only after playing ahead, should you realized how hard it could be in the later stage.). So I would not be so optimistic about the AW game just because we rolled a very easy map in the 1st try. Just try to imagine the feeling of a deity game that you get DOWed early by an aggressive AI and I don't think it would be easier to face 2 immortal AIs or 6 emperor AIs from the beginning.

Edit:

I don't like the unpredictable fractal map since people may think too easy again if we are with one AI in an island.

5-Immortal + 7 AI + Fractal + Low sea level
6-Immortal + 7 AI + Global highlands + Ridgelines + Normal peaks + massive/normal continents ( creates a pangea/continents like map, with lots of mountain ridges with fertile valleys in between, making the action to center in certain choke points.... I personally like this kind of maps, but the AI negotiates with it pretty badly ( think tectonics... well , not as bad as tectonics, but pretty bad ). I made one of those for NC -VI, if you want to have a idea of how it looks )

Besides that, maybe 3....

P.S Indeed we got a pretty easy start this time, but we definitely made it even easier ;) Even then, I think we can tackle a much harsher start. In the last of the Fox OCC-AW SGs ( that was in Immortal and ended with us being nuked ) we only lost because of losing 2 stacks entirely, that is a calamity in a OCC, that is always hugely prod contrained.

Could you give a link? I have always thought there's little chance on Pangaea map with a common start.

It wasn't a common start :/ We asked someone to engineer us a island inside a Inland sea map.....

Anyway it was fun... too bad that we couldn't wipe all the troubling AI before they could get nukes.

@Duckweed, i actually only want to invoke the no unit in ai territory pre 1000 bc rule if we're going emperor. On immortal i'd say go random. But maybe insure we're not 2 on an island.

King of the hill was won by someone (after many reloads but still a great result). I got destroyers ~1550 AD in my third attempt but indeed that doesn't win the game. It got too tedious and like you i felt i had reloaded too often to continue.

@ PaulisKhan, Good luck and see you around.

I would not call that a win with more than a hundred reloadings. I can win an OCC deity AW game then. I played to 1860AD where I was in the position to easily conquer my own continent and I stopped since each turn cost me load of time. Even though, my play to that point was with less than 10 sessions and most of them are due to regular time break.

Finally call to the vote for settings.

Current Votes:
1. 2
2. 3
3. 2
4. 1
5. 1
6 . 2 (I'll give a vote for 6)

It seems that there are 4 votes for 6 already. However, there are two choices in setting 6: Massive or Normal continents.

I never try this map. It seems that in massive continents AIs will tech faster due to intercontinent trade and will be easy for our early survival due to less AIs will be faced early on. However then there's good chance we will be alone in an island or with only AI in an island???. For normal continents, again I am afraid it might be too difficult to face 3 AIs in the same time. If my imagination is true, then I still prefer the latter since either along or with one AI in an island does not coordinate with AW setting.

No further suggestions/selections on the setting. Then I'll take setting 6

Immortal + 7 AI + Global highlands + Ridgelines + Normal peaks + normal continents

as the final agreement and generate a start tomorrow.

Lurker Comment:

Following your first go at this was very entertaining.

Global Highlands is a fun map script too, but can generate large expanses of hills. If there isn't seafood it can be difficult to make a really functional city on these parts of the continent and cottage-able locations with flatlands and food will be at a premium.

Are you going to keep Herr Bismark as der Fuehrer or roll a new random start?

Have fun either way and will keep lurking!

^Yeah, the city might be small early if there are too many hills tiles. I guess this can be partially solved by Windmills and farms instead of Cottages. I actually prefer farm more than cottage in most of my games.

We'll go randomly again.

I wonder if it would not be sensible to wait a little with this patch thing going... we still don't know if 3.17 and 3.19 saves are both ways compatible and , for various reasons, I still need to keep 3.17 for using some mods ( Pitboss with 40 civs and SGOTM with HoF ).....
