AM6- 5CC Always War (Dare to try??)

Hope it's pangea. The starting location looks really good!

You can always move the worker first, just to have a look around before settling there, but I cannot imagine how we could find anything better than that...

PreTurn- Settled Rome and I found even more f****n GOOOOODD Territory!!!! I have never seen better that this, have you!?!?!?! 4 cattle, 4 BG's and 5 mountains and hills!! I thought is was settler factory, but I think we're going to be Modern China is a couple turns! :D I started Pottery at 100% and getting it in 14 turns. Begun warrior.

1. Started irrigating.

2. ...

3. ...

4. ...

5. Rome finished Warrior and started an Archer.

6. ...

7. Popped a goodie hut and got another warrior.

8. Worker finished irrigation, moved to the other Cattle to irrigate also. We should have 2 Irrigated and 2 Mined and one Mined BG.

9. Started irrigating.

10. Rome; Archer> Granary prebuild. Rome expands revealing more BG and another cattle for another city.

11. We discover Pottery> Bronze Working.

12. I found the German border, we can delay contact.

13. We can send all of our units to thier city, if they have the same production as us then they wont make a city until around 2900BC. Raised lux. to 20% to keep the peace. Fortified one warrior near thier border, but they dont know us yet.

14. ...

15. Popped a goodie hut and got Cem. Burial.

16. ...

17. Rome went in disorder after moveing to size 4, sorry. Raised lux to 30%.

18. ...

19. Moved ajacent to thier territory, no contact though.

20. Bronze Working> Iron. Contact Germany and declared war. Took thier worker.

21. Attacked thier newly built spear with the warriors and lost both but I have an archer there ready to attack next turn. Sorry for takeing the extra turn. Got too excited. Changed lux. to 40%. Germany is pretty much dead even if we lose the archer, we took thier worker and they have no fixed tiles, none that I see. About 3 archers would kill them off.

Save!

I just want to point out something- as soon as we can see them in the contact list from pressing the little D in the bottom right, we are in contact with them and we should declare war with them.

Ok, hopefully a small world this time. ;)
Looking forward to an interesting game.
Here is my proposal for our future cities.

Note: Almost only productive tiles, NO overlap and only one desert tile. city Nr. 5 is actually in the fog, need to be settled on the best spot after scouting.
We have four powerhouse-cities and one tradeoff as far as corruption is concerned.
Suggestions as always welcome

OK, looking good. East doesnt look tempting so maybe one or 2 overlap with the capitol isnt bad to get full production from our 5th city. Keep our citizens on the cattle, the Governer tends to switch it over to the forest, first the two irrigated, the the two mined, if at size 5 then put it on the BG. ; Good Luck Karasu!

Bacon, Ok. I will check for that.

On city placement (I have been thinking about that today, as I was travelling around... ;) ).

In my understanding we have to get our five cities as productive as possible in the shortest time.
The trade-off here is city spacing versus number of workers.

If I were playing a "normal" game, I would have at least another city sharing one or two of Rome's cows, and a couple of cities between Rome and the wheats. But then, I wouldn't stop at five...

As Belisar points out, his placement is very well thought in terms of productive tiles. I see two options here:
1. If we space the cities "optimally", we will need a lot of workers. In this case, I see Rome building almost only Settlers and Workers and the other cities Barracks, then units (Granaries?). A Temple will be quite urgent for border expansion.

2. If we place the cities a bit closer to one another, they can be operational in a shorter time. So, Rome may go something like Settler, Worker, Barracks, and then alternate Settlers, Workers and Military as the game goes on. The other cities may start with Barracks (Granary?), then military. The Temple may be delayed in this case.

I think that this decision will have a strong impact on our game plan, so I will gladly wait a few more hours to see some feedback. Cheers.

With the enormous food-production of Rome, it is the perfect place to build all our workers and settlers for quite a while. Later, the city to the north can provide some workers with all its flood-plains and the wheat. Also, one or two tiles overlap are fine with me, but the two spots near Rome have the additional bonus located on fresh water.
And I, too, hate wasting this cow near Rome, but that would have been just a worker farm and we are running a 5CC here.

Good luck Karasu

There is the option of going to RCP, Ring City Placement. It places cities at identical distances from the capital. Corruption would be the same for each city. In the first rung, I think thats 10%. The southern most city would have to move orthagonally 1 tile NW. That yeilds a position of 4 orthagonal + 1 diagonal tile from the capital. That is same positioning as the proposed north and east cities. If the sothern most city remains at the proposed location, more corruption will be experienced by the northern and eastern cities, 25%, I think. The other city should be abandoned. The fifth should be placed the same way in the southwest. Of course I have not factored in resources or luxuries.

Edit; Am I correct in assuming that 5 cities include the capital. If not the above needs to be redone.

Ok, here we are.

2800 BC
Rome completes Granary. Started Settler.
Worker builds road on mined cow. The other worker goes towards Rome.
The Archer crosses the river.
The Granary upkeep cost is making us running at -1 gpt. I will keep research as high as possible until we complete Iron Working.

2750 BC
Well, folks, with so many of you wishing good luck, it is no surprise that...
...the Archer kills the lone German warrior, becoming Elite in the process. Berlin is "liberated" and a Settler captured. The Germans are no more.

But now I have a doubt. Am I allowed to keep Berlin?
Well, here is my reasoning: since it is only our second city (i.e., we are not exceeding five), and we can freely abandon it later on, I will keep it.

It will give us the possibility to build a few units while Rome is busy with Settlers and Workers. So, I start Barracks over there with the idea of pop-rushing it as soon as possible.

2710 BC
The captured workers plus the Archer go back Rome.

2630 BC
The Settler is ready, I can set the Lux slide back to 20% (+1 gpt, science never changed). The Settler goes 1N 1W on the mountain.
Two workers on the BG right west of it, starting to mine it.

I am still unsure on the city location. If I build it where the river bends, it will only have 1FP and all prairie until its borders expand, which is not too good.
If I build it 1SE of that tile (on the grassland), it will immediately have access to one more FP, one BG and the Incense on the hills. I will not need to hurry on a Temple, and will achieve (I think) a faster start. On the other hand, when its borders eventually do expand, it will not have access to the wheats.

I will decide next turn, dependin also on what the returning units reveal on the neighbourhood.

Rome is set to Worker (2 turns)

2510 BC
Veii founded on the Grassland.
In the end, I thought that having to build a Temple may cost us too many precious turns right at the start. Moreover, there are enough Flood Plains not to be too desperate for loosing a Wheat...

Unsurprisingly, I start building Barracks. I am also thinking of a Granary, later on.

2470 BC
The workers, of course, are improving the terrain around Veii.

2430 BC
Rome builds Barracks. Starts Warrior (at last).

2350 BC
Warrior ready in Rome. Settler started. I will give a look East to see if it's worth.
Hey! A goody hut!

2310 BC
Pop-rushed Barracks in Berlin.

2270 BC
The Hut gave us The Wheel. Ops! Look where a Horsie is! Did we want any mounted units?
We are just 3 turns from Iron Working (little money in the Treasury, but I stayed with the maximum possible science rate).

2230 BC
The next city will definitely be there. I am not sure whether N or S of the mountain, which would have been -clearly- my preferred site.

2190 BC
Settler ready in Rome. Started Worker.

2150 BC
Iron Working.
Well, I see two Iron sources, not too well located. I would rather go for the one to the NW, settling in the Wheat-Hills area and possibly building a Colony. I will send there the Archer to make sure nobody comes before us.

I set research to Literature and lower the science funding level (at least for the moment).

2110 BC
The Settler went on the Forest, next to the horses because: immediate access to the Horse; the two BGs on the coast (as opposed to two desert tiles to the North).

2070 BC
Antium founded. I started a Granary, but you can always turn it into whatever.

20 - 2030 BC
Ok, end of my time.
I made a small mistake in irrigating one FP too many near Veii before going to connect the Incense with the first group of Workers. Should have done it in reverse order.
The second group is going to Antium; if Rome is kept on Workers and Settlers, mining the remaining Cow can be completed in a while.

In the end, we have:

3 cities (+1):
- Rome has Granary + Barracks, just started Warrior (can change to anything)
- Veii has Barracks, building Warrior
- Antium just started Granary (can change to anything)
- Berlin has Barracks, is building Warrior (can change to anything, I was even thinking to pop-rush something like a Spearman and abandon Berlin altogether).

4 Workers + 3 captured
1 Elite Archer
1 Veteran Warrior

Here is how the world looks like.

2030BC.jpg

CoffeeCup, I did consider RCP. I think the terrain layout and the five-city limitation made it a bit difficult (at least for me) to stick to it.

Here is the save

... and now off to a couple hours sleep (severe sleep deprivation will be my excuse for any major blunder I made... ;) ).
Good luck everyone, I'll be back on Monday!

Well right now Veii is 4.5 tiles distant, Antium is 5 and the next city will be 5 also. So Veii will be the only first ring city, Antium plus future will be second ring cities and Berlin a third ring city.

Some stats: First ring corruption should be around 10%, second ring, given only the one first ring city say 20 - 30%, Berlin 90%.

This is just an fyi, no proposal intended. ;)

On another note, I played some shadow turns as China and did not find this as difficult as I first thought. Sorry if I misled anyone.

A quiet set turns.

Good turns, Karasu.
As soon as we have our last settler in position, we can abandon Berlin.

Note: We should focus on infrastructure at the moment, link iron and then start on legions.
So no more exploring needed to delay contact as long as possible.

@Coffeecup: I'm currently experimenting with map-size/opening strats for AWD. Any interest in future games?

@Amirsan: No got it from cgannon. Shall we two swap?

EDIT: I found his "away on week-end" post.
Lets swap, I take the save, hope that's Ok.
