Correct. It's the pseudonym used by Valentine Wiggin to write her books. Also, why haven't you read Speaker for the Dead? IMO, it's better than Xenocide and CotM by miles and just under the original.

Clinging On; Desperate Lives

capitol-ruins2.jpeg

The world lay in ruins. Most major cities were annihilated by nuclear weapons, and nearly half of the world became hellish and uninhabitable by nuclear fallout. Some nations, like Japan, were even completely wiped off the map by the nuclear holocaust, with the only ethnically Japanese survivors being soldiers stationed in deep Asia or the Rocky Mountains of North America. Even the capital of Washington was quarantined, with nobody daring to venture into the ruins lest dying from the radiation. The United Socialist States of America, very active in the bombardment of their nuclear arsenal, was also destroyed. General Lemnitzer, neither winning the war nor helping the panicked population, had to resort to military threats to avoid angry mobs outside the military headquarters (now in Virginia).

In Europe, the Post-American nations did relatively excellent. The Sicilian Commune stayed neutral during the holocaust, and was subsequently untouched. The people built a communist society that flourished, although exotic luxuries were understandably impossible to get. Farms were tilled, animals were herded, and the Sicilian society did well. As refugees poured in to take advantage of the equal for all sentiment, disorder began to develop. Gangs grew that demanded a larger share of the wealth, and differences between groups of people began dividing the Commune. Although the government successfully and ethically ended the violence, organizations such as the Italian Mafia appeared that drove fear into the people and claimed larger influence than the Commune itself.

New Rome, the ideological utopia of Trotskyist communism, lost the capital of Istanbul (not Constantinople) but flourished with their continued control of the lower Balkans, Greece, and inner-Anatolia. The USSR, the largest threat to New Rome, sent many military expeditions to the region but were promptly defeated every time. As the year went on, New Rome would declare influence over larger and larger parts of the Middle East and Europe.

The Pahlavi Republic during this time found it very easy to scare the Iranian population into quickly capitulating to the new government. The Republic promised (and gave) unprecedented amounts of civil liberties and rights, and the free market in Iran became the largest economy in the post-nuclear holocaust world. Although they suffered large casualties from Russian invasions, the Russian conquests were not successful far past Tehran.

George Decker and the United States Pact

George Decker skyrocketed to national prominence in the 1940's for his military campaigns against Japan in both the far Pacific and on the home-front. Later, he would also lead small military campaigns against Mexico; his actions were the chief contributors to the United States gaining Oklahoma, despite heavy Mexican garrison. By 1958, he was rising to executive positions in the Harriman presidency and the Lemnitzer Regime. He was given a large army to take to Europe to fight the Third Reich, before being relieved of that duty by General Lemnitzer. Within the year of the Lemnitzer Regime, he was given the task of leading small skirmishes against the surrounding post-American nations. As nuclear war broke out and Washington and New York were left in ruins, Lemnitzer found it very difficult to lead a loose unification of rioting, panicked people. After rallying through wrecked streets and calling for a new order, he led a successful coup against Lemnitzer and installed the Decker Regime.

Decker's Regime, taking over after the first onslaught of the "Nuclear Holocaust", now led a small region west of Maryland that survived nuclear obliteration. Decker's Regime was luckier than the USSA, which was all but completely destroyed. The Dixie States, although avoiding most of the nuclear fallout, was economically bankrupt and resorted to straw roofs and dirt floors. The Kaskaskia Confederation, however, was doing quite well with a decent agricultural economy surviving and small cities in Great Plains working hard to recover.

The Decker Regime moved their capital to Fairmont, West Virginia. The location was clean, had an uncontaminated fresh water source, and was idealistic for a reconstructed United States capital. Decker moved into the High Gate building of the city, where he organized a new administration and dealt with the national mundane tasks of reconstruction.

The Decker Regime (now officially going by the Republic of Virginia), Kaskaskia, and the Dixie States met in Fairmont in the early months of 1961 to discuss America's future. The nations were not doing as well as planned, and as the world collapsed from environmental destruction and anarchy, the future had little silver linings. In February, the three nations signed the United States Pact of 1961, which temporarily united the three nations and revived the United States of America; secession was not illegal in this unification, as many politicians worried about an authoritarian disaster. Leading military generals of the three nations organized several committees, with the most important being the American Nuclear Society (ANS) that had the authority to both use quick decisive actions to use nuclear weapons, and had extensive influence in the lobbying industry.

And although things were re-organizing and societies were responding, the world was not okay. Thousands, maybe millions of species had become extinct, entire bodies of water were polluted beyond the point of repair, and forests were incinerated and their inhabitants as well. The Earth was destroyed, and the world population (now only around 200 million) was fighting over the ashes. To make things even worse, as governments re-organized and met with each other, they still reverted to their nuclear-backed intimidation tactics.

The United Socialist States of America, very active in the bombardment of their nuclear arsenal, was also destroyed.

What about me? :(

Geez I'm really being screwed over

I see.... Well I had a good run. Several months of power  We will rise again and take over the rest of America! In about 1000-1500 years give or take, but it will happen! And yeah, I'm happy to have played my role as cannon fodder for the rest of America :D The only bit of happiness I get from this is that Dixie has fallen economically :mwaha:

We have committed ecological suicide....
Well I got seeds at least. Also some embryos of essential animals like cows and such. Even dogs for comfort.

I've learned a weeks worth of agriculture so I suppose that qualifies me enough. I'm glad I was untouched though (from the outside at least).

So much for role playing after this is over

You still have West Pennsylvania. You can rise from the ashes and convince the United States to let you in. Right now, they just see you as the outskirts of civilization. You're like the Shire, and the rest of the nations are Gondor, Rohan, and Rivendel.

I will write some sort of request to be let in.

LotR Refrence +1

I send this message to the members of the United States Pact of 1961. I wish to join your grouping of the inheritors to our once great and large nation. Only together can we power through these turbulent times and only together can we prevail. While my nation has been the target for many nuclear attacks, I still have many oil-rich fields in use in the area of Pennsylvania that were not destroyed in the bombardments. We must all join together as we can only be America with the induction of New England. There will be no need to help with the reconstruction of my nation as I will handle it myself if I must. There is no reason not to let my fair nation become a part of the pact.
-President of the USSA

Why is Dixie being so screwed over? The people in power AREN'T racist and are actually very smart. They'd never let things get so bad.

No resources and constant stress from Mexico and Kaskaskia.
