1918-1919: World War Begins

pic_giant_021814_SM_Lessons-of-World-War-1.jpg

Dark clouds are smouldering into red
While down the craters morning burns.
The dying soldier shifts his head
To watch the glory that returns;
He lifts his fingers toward the skies
Where holy brightness breaks in flame;
Radiance reflected in his eyes,
And on his lips a whispered name.

You'd think, to hear some people talk,
That lads go West with sobs and curses,
And sullen faces white as chalk,
Hankering for wreaths and tombs and hearses.
But they've been taught the way to do it
Like Christian soldiers; not with haste
And shuddering groans; but passing through it
With due regard for decent taste.

After the violent and chaotic riots in Cleveland, Wilson's foreign policy began showing his ailing health. Russia's government requested from the United States a supply of artillery and missiles in order to defend their interests from Argentine, Brazilian, and Egyptians who recently declared war on the USSR after a string of diplomatic incidents. Wilson agreed, not wishing to lose favor with the large nation.

Ties with Argentina began strengthening when after a century of refusal, the new autocratic leaders of Argentina opened up their borders to American trade. Although not willing to sign an alliance, as it would certainly lead to war with Brazil, Italy, and Russia, America began supplying them needed oil.

1919: The War to End All Wars

When German forces began marching into Austria, Wilson had been meeting with Austrian officials off-and-on for months. Stressed both domestically by low approval ratings and externally by a collapsing world order, Wilson would not make appearances for the rest of his term. In Austria itself, as a prelude to the German entrance, Austria's authorities encouraged violence against Serbian minorities that sided with the imperialism of Germany; this led to huge riots, in which Austria's leader demanded America's immediate entrance into the war. It was now, or risk losing all diplomatic advantages gained in the previous years. On January 9th, 1919, Wilson declared war on the German Axis and plunged the world into the "War to End All Wars".

Troops soon landed in Suez, blinded by the Arab sun and sweltering under non-Siberian conditions. Troops were ordered to stay in Suez, and were relieved of the responsibility of marching into Egypt or Israel.

Naval wars were common again. Off the coast of Iceland, an inferior German destroyer managed to outmaneuver a large American battleship and sink it. Wilson was blamed for lack of orders and foresight following this, but another American battleship soon avenged the vessel. Lebanese trade ships were given orders to be sunk as well, fearing that they could pillage fishing industries in the Gulf of Mexico.

After battleships stationed in Ireland finished bombarding the German coast clear of their fortifications, troops stationed in Denmark quickly moved down and captured the port city of Hamburg. Frankfurt quickly followed. Germany was now cut in half, with the administration of Berlin being separated from German France and Holland. Wilson's popularity temporarily stopped declining following these victories.

Absolute protest broke out when Sweden's government collapsed after pro-Germans assassinated the prime minister. The Pro-German factions within the government quickly took control, and ordered the destruction of US airships stationed in Copenhagen and Stockholm. This led to a loss of 6 bomber fleets, and surrounded the US army south of Denmark and in Finland. Following this defeat on an American ally, Wilson began focusing on a full out war, as Germany came so much closer to European dominance.

Following intense stress from the collapse of Sweden and the destruction of navies near the Phillipines, and domestic protests from Socialists, Wilson collapsed in his office from a stroke. Barely able to fulfill his duties, his wife quickly took over most of his affairs. This led to a large debate in Congress whether the president's incapacitation should lead to the Vice President taking over, but they allowed the First Lady Edith to assist the president as his term was nearing an end. Military leaders during this time became much more independent, as the chain of command was temporarily disrupted.

Citizens! The leader you entrusted your fate to has failed you! He has drained the treasury, destroyed our economy, dragged us into his self-created World War, and lost our overseas provinces with nothing to compensate for these losses, both financially and losses in lives! People, is this really the kind of person you want as your president? He will lead us to ruin if he continues acting as our President!

Exactly! Together we must make sure this never happens again! The communists will provide safety to the soldiers, better working conditions, and a much better economy!

Campaign News:
The race is intense! Fierce debates break out at convention as the far left and the far right battle to get their nominee elected! The Wilson Democrats, with a very weakened reputation from the Wilson administration, has done very poorly and has broken off into either supporting the diverse Socialist Party (with ideologies ranging from extreme autocratic communism, anarchism, moderate socialism, and liberal progressives) or the Harding Democrats, similar to the old Republican Party, that was formed from the backlash of the far left. The race is now primarily between Harding and Debs, who declare they are the best candidate for keeping law and order. The World War is still ongoing as well, with Harding declaring he will win the war, and Debs declaring he will leave the war efficiently without losing progress made.

Eugene V. Debs Wins 4th Term with 58.7% of Popular Vote!

Becoming the 22nd president of the United States following the most politically radical years in American history, the former 20th president vows to bring troops out of Germany with as little American casualties as possible. Citing war with Germany as a "capitalist war", he looks to diplomatically negotiate with Germany to limit their imperialist motivations, and restore world peace.

Being dubbed the "Peacemaker" in reference to Wilson's tainted nickname, the "Phrasemaker", Debs decades long support has won him respect from all sides of the political spectrum, including Harding; although Harding strongly disagrees with his lenience on communists and his pacifist leanings.

The issue is Socialism versus Capitalism. I am for Socialism because I am for humanity. We have been cursed with the reign of gold long enough. Money constitutes no proper basis of civilization. The time has come to regenerate society — we are on the eve of universal change. I am not a Labor Leader; I do not want you to follow me or anyone else; if you are looking for a Moses to lead you out of this capitalist wilderness, you will stay right where you are. I would not lead you into the promised land if I could, because if I led you in, some one else would lead you out. You must use your heads as well as your hands, and get yourself out of your present condition; as it is now the capitalists use your heads and your hands. Wherever capitalism appears, in pursuit of its mission of exploitation, there will Socialism, fertilized by misery, watered by tears, and vitalized by agitation be also found, unfurling its class-struggle banner and proclaiming its mission of emancipation. Ten thousand times has the labor movement stumbled and fallen and bruised itself, and risen again; been seized by the throat and choked and clubbed into insensibility; enjoined by courts, assaulted by thugs, charged by the militia, shot down by regulars, traduced by the press, frowned upon by public opinion, deceived by politicians, threatened by priests, repudiated by renegades, preyed upon by grafters, infested by spies, deserted by cowards, betrayed by traitors, bled by leeches, and sold out by leaders, but notwithstanding all this, and all these, it is today the most vital and potential power this planet has ever known, and its historic mission of emancipating the workers of the world from the thraldom of the ages is as certain of ultimate realization as is the setting of the sun.
The most heroic word in all languages is REVOLUTION. Yet, I have no country to fight for; my country is the earth; I am a citizen of the world. I am opposing a social order in which it is possible for one man who does absolutely nothing that is useful to amass a fortune of hundreds of millions of dollars, while millions of men and women who work all the days of their lives secure barely enough for a wretched existence. From the crown of my head to the soles of my feet I am Bolshevik, and proud of it.

Ballot:
Harding Democratic Party 9.5
•Harding 9.5

Socialist Party 13.5
•Debs 13.5

(23 voters! Wow! What a jump! At this rate, the next election should have like 27 voters!)

Would you rather have Germany be at our doorstep, assassin? The war is very much in our favor and will finish soon.

Also, Harding.

Comrades! Vote for Debs! His leadership was the best we have seen. Come on my communist followers! Vote Debs!
Debs

Eugene V. Debs

Only because I'm opposed to secession and I believe any protest would be futile. Also, we communists must stay united to stay strong!

Harding has my vote. His goals seem good, and the fact he accepts moderate socialists is good. My vote was changed

Moderate socialism was shown to be good, evident in Debs' presidency, so maybe once we win the war (not if), we can work on gaining a friendship between democracy and socialism.

I have nothing to say for or against communism. Communism was the reason why we attacked and defeated Russia and England, only to reconstruct them as democratic. England successfully became a democracy, but democratic Russia collapsed and returned to its communist state.

I feel it works only for some nations, and I don't know if it'd work for America. If we do end up with a communist president, I'll see how it works out and then play my cards.

Think of it this way, if somehow we get a communist as president, than that would be just a communist party in a democracy, not a communist government.

Make no mistake, just because I'm voting for the Socialist Party doesn't mean I won't vote for the Communist or Social Labor Party if I had the chance

Debs

While initiating the campaigning Debs on request from noted far left leaders has agreed to initiate a inter-party dialogue between Democrats, Communists, and Socialists as an effort to bring peace and stability in the USA. Far left communist and Socialist labor organizations who were run underground due to Wilson's policies have decided to merge into the Socialist party under Deb's leadership forgoing radical demands.

However, a dwindling section of militant far left activists remain and operate underground acting as insurgents. There is talk of a split among these on the question of terror tactics and mass tactics. A new idea called Anarchism is taking hold among these who defy any overt public participation, and party mechanisms. They are beholden to the path of individual terror. Numerous city councillors and capitalists of repute have been assassinated by these anarchists of late.
