American moral values: example to the world?

I didn't say they're bad sheriff, I just thing they should be more careful talking about their morals, because it seldom survives the contact with the real world.

For example:
Home: We like freedom, democracy, human rights and blah blah blah.
Trade: Let's trade with Saudi Arabia because it's profitable. Hey, who cares they don't have any freedom, democracy and they don't exactly promote human rights?

Hypocrisy needs to be applied if you want to have a realist foreign policy.

Americans aren't more moral than other people in general. In fact I had in the past thought of Americans as less moral generally than people from other countries.

It's hard to judge whether a country is more "moral" than others since every culture have their own values and we tend to judge other cultures by our own values which doesn't always match the values of the culture we're judging.

As a kid i must have been kinda brainwashed as i though that US really is the "Land of free, brave etc", but when i started using my own brain and studied history my view changed.

lol I used to think that too!

And I think this is the dangerous thing about the spread of American culture. US values aren't always suitable for other areas or cultures and the rapid spread of US culture in the modern world is very dangerous as there can be unexpected consequences eg the fabric of traditional society destroyed or youths neglecting their own culture and adopting a view of the world based on the often incomplete understanding of US cultures. Sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes not.

For my entire life, I've been exposed to little things here and there confirming the belief that Americans are inherently moral and that, as a nation, in international relations, we are helpful to the world; we are much more good than bad. We were examples to the world.

Because of the Iraq war, constant scandals by our government, constant scandals committed by Americans abroad, and the occasional calls for "nuke 'em" from my fellow Americans that I've come to the conclusion that Americans are NOT inherently more moral than people elsewhere. There are other things too, but it's really the Iraq war that turned my opinion around. I've also come to realize that Americans NEVER WERE more moral than people elsewhere.

So, how about you?

It is quite naive to believe that citizens of any given nation are inherently morally superior or inferior to the citizens of another nation.

But I don't don't blame Americans for the actions of the rulning elite. I think Reagan, Bush I, Bush II, and Clinton... should all be hanged (if I'd advocate death penatly ). None of these four had any respsect for the opinions of American public.
