To compliment the Historical Jokes thread, and to provide a bit of light relief, I thought I'd start a thread where we can post photos and im ages and such which can be appreciated by intelligent poepl (and I'd appreciate it if this thread were left here, as it's really gonna be a historical thread).
Or feel free to just post amazing or interesting photographs as long as they're historical

Remember to add a description of the photo to help people out a bit.

I recently came across a fantastic collection of photos taken by German troops in WWII, including these:

And taken after!

That's just a taster, I've plenty more, but I'd like to see other peoples' collections.

The SS finds a novel method of crossing a river

250px-1892_Pledge_of_Allegiance2.jpg

This is called the "Bellamy salute", the salute used during the early 20th when saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Despite appearances, there are no direct connections to the Nazis, both salutes being inspired by the one used in ancient Rome (the Americans took it as a symbol of early Republicanism (as in "without monarchy", not the GOP), the Nazis as a symbol of Aryan imperialism). Creates an amusing first impression, though.

I have a recent picture in Modern History, of some brave brothers in Darfur.

Soldiers messing around in a Zeltbahn tent.
zelttent2mf6.jpg

The Zeltban was a long sheet which was eventually issued to all German soldiers in various colours and camouflages, and could be used in a manner of ways.
Being waterproof, it was often worn as a rain-poncho, using the slit in the top, asa means of prsonal camouflage, or as a tent.
It could be used asd a reasonable one person temporart tent, but if four or more of them were buttoned together with the toggles, it could make a very comfortable four person tent, or even up to thirty people if they had a surplus of zeltbahns.

That tank with the turret in the ground is not in Iraq. It's Israeli markings.

I've seen that picture before refering to it as an Israeli tank in Palestine somewhere.

The caption read "Isreali Tank : 0, Palestinian Hill: 1"
