An rpg question

Most interesting world and character development...

My favourite and top listing RPGs? Probably Baldur's Gate II (have not played the first one), Mass Effect series, Dragon Age Origins, Morrowind, The Witcher, and though not an RPG Mafia 1 is a great game (haven't played the 2nd one).

I absolutely loved Morrowind and Oblivion, but I don't have a grudge against either (like most fanboys/girls of the series do).

Baldur's Gate was probably my first crpg, followed by its sequels/derivatives (Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, etc).

And of the non-fantasy rpg's, Mass Effect is awesome.

So my vote is for the Elder Scrolls series. I love the sandbox gameplay.

for me it is Baldurs Gate. easy to get into, even somewhat easy to beat. but the great flair and characters as well as the possibilities and (for the time being amazing) mods made me come back to it again and again for years.

picking different party formations, specializations, different paths, finding hidden items, eventually going the powergamer approach and trying to do the game with 3 and, eventually, 1 character was all fun.

one of the last rpgs that did not have the "we adapt the difficulty of any encounter to what you can handle", which I loathe and despise. you wanna take down that dragon you better be ready for it.

Are there any critical differences between pc rpgs and console ones? From the piucs i have seen some pc ones look very gloomy :)

A lot of console rpgs are jrpgs, but there are many rpgs now that are ported over to the console or co-developed for both console and PC (ie Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fallout 3).

However for most I would stick to the PC, because mods = win. I've got a few mods for Dragons Age (and this time I mean only about a dozen) and they all really improve something in the game or add a new suit of armour or weapon. With Mass Effect though there isn't much to add/mod on the PC, a few minor graphical mods and the ability to get and share gamesaves at MassEffectSaves.com

I forgot to mention Fallout 1 & 2, though I haven't played 2 yet and am not very far in 1. Fallout 3 is great too but it is a very different game.

Oh god you done got me started...

My personal faves:

[SNES] Terranigma - I've been on this somewhat obscure game's bandwagon since last year. SNES typical topdown action-rpg. Awesome story involving rebirth and whatnot. One of the best soundtracks for any game ever, pretty good for a 16-bit game.

[SNES] Illusion of Gaia - Gets a ration of crap for being a Zelda imitator, but it was a pretty good game in its own right. Action rpg, cool storyline, not as frustrating as your typical random battle rpg.

[SNES] Earthbound - Off the wall in many ways. Typical console, turn based, topdown rpg. One of the more humorous games you will ever play, but when it decides to get serious MAN does it do it well. Holy crap.

[SNES] Secret of Mana - The crown jewel of all action rpgs. Enjoyable epic story. Amazing soundtrack.

[SNES] Secret of Evermore - Alot like SoM except it involves a wise-cracking American kid, his dog, and TIME TRAVEL. A load of fun.

[PS1] Dragon Warrior VII - Turnbased, topdown rpg. This game is 100+ hours of straight storyline mode alone. There are about 32 different "worlds", more like vignettes, before it all really converges together on the second disc. Plays like an oldschool NES rpg, even though it has 3D environments.

[PS1] Final Fantasy IX - If you only play one Final Fantasy, play this one. You really feel the fantasy, epic feel to the story. The character development is fantastic, including the villains. The soundtrack is of course absolutely incredible.

[PS1] Final Fantasy VII - This game really is very very good. Has a more modern feel to it than many other RPGs, excellent character development, and an excellent story especially if the twists havnt been revealed to you yet by the internet :p

[PS1] Final Fantasy Tactics - Turnbased strategy, much different from usual rpgs. The best story of any RPG I've ever played. Character development out the ass. Incredible musick.

[N64] Ogre Battle 64 - Another good strategy-ish rpg-ish kinda game. Another incredible storyline, involves some things you might like (demons, bouts with insanity, etc).

[PS1] Parasite Eve - Relatively short, but intense horror-action rpg.

All I can think of right now.

All of them are story driven. The darkest atmosphere would probably be Parasite Eve.

FFIII

Diablo II

And I am not sure if this is resticted to single player, but if you want a true sandbox the only option is Ultima Online. Dated to be sure, but all modern MMORPGs are nothing more than a developer cattle proding you through the same experiance. UO is literally just an open world, do with it what you please.

I haven't played it through, but it's my "favorite" RPG, I guess: Vampire: The Masquerade. Not big on RPG's, especially the cutesy JRPG's don't catch my interest. Vampire, though, is pretty dark atmosphered to say at least, if you are into that.

[SNES] Earthbound - Off the wall in many ways. Typical console, turn based, topdown rpg. One of the more humorous games you will ever play, but when it decides to get serious MAN does it do it well. Holy crap.

oh jeez that game rocks!! Now I want to play it again!! the story was great!!

Planescape : Torment is not only the best RPG bar none with a light-year advance, but it's also the best game ever, period.

Very good other RPG include : Morrowind, Baldur's Gate II, Fallout, Arcanum, Dragon Age, Deus Ex (only the first one, please), Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic.

The major difference is rather simple : "console RPG" are, in fact, simply not RPG for the overwhelming part. They are adventure games. You don't have any meaningful choices to play a role or influence the story, as such you can not be, well, role-playing.
It's just that people have taken the habit of calling "RPG" anything that includes XP and gear (seeing Diablo being called a RPG just makes me both laugh and cry...).

Notice that it doesn't mean they are bad. Japanese adventure games have often very interesting story and characters, and I'm a bit fan of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy and the like. But they aren't RPG.

All suggestions involving the two Mass Effect games are excellent ones

Yes, Earthbound is maybe the first "game with lots of text, statistics and whatnot and strange numerical battles" I played. I didn't even understand English very well back then, but the general mood of the game was pervasive. It was strangely believable. The music was epic too.

I played it through again a few years ago and all its humor revealed itself to me. Just makes this an instant classic. There was a thread about SNES RPGs I think, and I may have forgotten to mention Earthbound, which is ridiculous since I think it may be my favourite on the console.

Dragon Age is very, very, good. Nostalgia aside, it may even be better than BG2. The gameplay certainly is, even if the story isn't quite as epic and engrossing as BG's. It also shares some of BG's few flaws, but at least it is much more modable.

The Mass Effect games are great at everything but combat, which is merely good. Planescape Torment has the best story, setting, and most interesting characters, along with BG's amazing combat engine. It's the best RPG i've played thus far.

The Witcher
Vampire: The Masquerade
Oblivion
Morrowind
Dragon Age: Origins

were all pretty good.
