Ank06 - 3CC Conquest

It's normally a great use for an army to pillage, however in this situation they have way too much land, and we need that army to raze cities(IMHO). Plus PTW armies don't have pillage as a free action.

Mid set update:
Arab cavalry army at Leipzig destroyed.

Shiraz still stands even after two rounds of bombardment by 13 cannon.

Leipzig still stands, defended by rifle and cavalry.

Other guys making no progress in west, other than to control Abu's reinforcements to the east.

0-1550
Military count:
13 Muskets
13 Cavalry
15 Cannon
1 Army of cavalry
1 MGL
Millie the see-it-on-the-bright-side babe tells me our military is strong vs the Aztecs (Abu's ally against the AMericans and Zulu), but then goes winsome and tells me we are weak vs the Arabs.

Happy population.

Way down the tech tree, and this monkey ain't going to climb it either.

Objectives:
1) Burn Shiraz-defended by infantry.
2) Burn Leipzig-defended by at least one cavlary army, so it will take at least five cavalry, and I expect a few more as there has to be at least one rifle or infantryman there.
3) Resources permitting march across Abe's territory and see what damage can be done to Abu's homeland.
4) Claim a couple of luxury goods.

Looks like the leader will be used to put a big church into Alesia, but then discover it lacks a temple, so rush a stadium instead, then a temple

Note the score: we are ahead of the dead and comatose!

A little judicoius map reading shows that we have control of one of Abu's iron sources and his other is in the boundaries of Atlanta. Maybe Abe will be successful there.

1-1555
Pile a bunch of cannon onto hill above Shiraz and try a couple of ranging shots. Take a hitpoint off the elite infantryman, revealing a regular and kill some population.

Rushed stadium and wines colony in the SE brings Alesia back from the brink.

No sign of Arabs, just a couple of Haniibal pairs wandering around in the mountains south of Lugdunum looking for a spot to light.

Move cavalry towards Leipzig.

Interstingly enough and wish I could take credit for a clever decoying operation, but Abu's cavalry army gallops out of Leipzig and seizes the wine colony, just like mallards to a cove full of blocks. Now they are exposed in the open and there are five Celtic Dragoons on the way in and all within reach. The Arab army attacks a stack of five cavalry on a hill, kills one but absorbs some damage in the process.

2-1560
Cannon fire at Shiraz knocks the population down to 2, cripples a regular grunt and wounds another. Two cavlary attacks promote a wounded Arab regular, I lose a cav and cripple another.

In the SE one cav dies and a second is crippled but Abu's army is gone. The road to Leipzig reveals a barb camp. Whack the camp and collect the fine.

The remaining cavs approaching Leipzig reveals a harbor so I am expecting to see Infantry in the garrison.

3-1565
Cavalry approaching Leipzig find a rifle in the garrison and one cav outside the city, slightly wounded after whacking a Phrygian horseman.

Phrygian barb kills a couple of slaves in the SE. Healed cav takes our revenge and reveals a barb camp threatening the spice colonies.

Cannon batteries go 0-13 at Shiraz.

4-1570
Leipzig falls at the cost of three cavalrymen. Burn the town and Shakespeare's Theatre. It was defended by a single rifle.

Army heals and heads for Shiraz. Cannon go 1-14 hurting the vet infantry. Lose a cav and lightly wound another killing the veteran infantryman at Shiraz. Regular promotes after retreating our cav.

One more round of bombardment then the army attacks. If we lose it Caracturus is waiting at Alesia to form another.if we can take and hold the town long enough.

A single Arab cavlaryman is left in the SE heading for the spice colonies.

Whack a barb camp on the way to the spice colonies and collect fines.

An Arab guerilla and infantry skate into view and the infantryman takes a worker from the wall in the west while the guerilla is killed by American Cavalry.

5-1575
Cannon go 0-14 at Shiraz and miss the Arab infantryman.
Army attacks Shiraz, redlines the defender but fails and dies. Vet cav takes the city. Hold it long enough to form another army, then burn.

Arab slave in SE builds ivory colony. Cav in SE kills another barb on the road to the spice camps.

Americans are taking it on the chin. Since 1550, Denver has fallen to the Arabs, Washington has been razed, and based on population numbers it looks like Philadelphia has changed hands at least twice.

This is America in 1550:

AmericaAnkk06_1550_02.jpg

And a look ahead at America in 1600:

Ankk06_1600_04.jpg

I am afraid I mishandled the assault on Shiraz. Instead of picking at it I should have waited for overwhelming force. Now I have only seven cavalry left when I could have had at least eleven. "Impetuosity is not a virtue, Bede," intones the Abbot. "We have admonished you about this before."

Catapaults captured at Shiraz head back to Lugdunum for upgrade.

Three cavs start march back to Alesia to join army.

Victorious cav at Shiraz moves onto mountain for better view.

And now the Arabs will talk..they are seeking peace. They offer Magnetism and their treasury....

Single Arab cavalry in SE razes a Carthaginian town and Abe loses Cincinnati to the Arab juggernaut.

Barbs pillage incense camp and destroy an outpost in the SE.

Aztex found Unpronounceable on ruins of Shiraz.

Arabs take Cirta from Hannibal.

1580-1585
Move muskets and cannon into fortress at Suhar.

Two Arab infantry skate across from Cirta and attack the fortress at Shura wounding one musket and promoting another. A third scoots into the territory at Ibabango and takes a worker.

8-1590
Bombard Suhar and hurt the defenders.
Arab infantry ignore worker bait and skate back west to join advancing Arabs who fight a skirmish with an American musket and lose.
Abe loses Dallas and Philadelphia to the Arabs.
Barbarians are being a nuisance in the east, overunning an iron colony and killing a worker in the Ostwall.

9-1595
Cavalry slaughter one offending barb in the east.
Cannon kill two citizens at Suhar, defenders are untouched.

Now that the Aztecs stand between our western marches and the Arabs and the Abe will soon be down to only one town, Ibabango, decide to bring the Aztecs in for Physics and Furs. We pick up 10g in the deal.

The Aztecs are no slouches in the deal, killing an Arab cavalryman at Suhar and wounding another cav at Unpronounceable which falls to Arab cav. Abe the dimwit sends a settler pair out to claim the ruins.

Arab infantry attacks and kills our lookout Cav on the mountain at Unrponounceable

Arab infantry marches south out of Suhar towards the Aztec town of Umfolozi.
10-1600
Vet Cavalry scoots across and kills the Arab infantry on the mountain revealing an Arab settler group in the ruins of Unpronounceable that was Shiraz.

Elite cav dies crippling the infantry defender, but the Army finishes off the infantry and a cavalryman and captures two more slaves then takes refuge in the mountain.

Cannon bombard Shura and hurt the defenders and kill 2/3 of the population.

Cav in the E wipes out another source of barbarian nuisance.

I suppose the only thing to do is keep on keeping on. Now that Abe in the west has become a non-entity, the Arab cavalry should be showing up soon. The Aztecs now have some skin in the game now so maybe Abu will concentrate on the mountain towns, but somehow I doubt it. If Abe can builds another town on the ruins of Shiraz then the west will remain marginally secure. If the Aztecs take Shura then maybe we can swing west towards the Arab plain. I would avoid Cirta as those mountains will be a trap.

The army is going to take some healing before it can move forward and we could stand another set of cavalry building before mounting a big offensive.

I have probably spent too much energy at the sideshow that is Shura, but leaving it as it stands would be just another thorn in our flank.

Our forces now

The Front:

Ankk06_1600_04.jpg

Well fought Brother Bede! Unfortunately I didn't think ABe would fold so quickly. The good news is that we'll have one less opponent to kill, after Abu is done with him. The Bad news is that Abu is stronger than ever.

This can be done gentlemen! We just need to use our brains.

Nice job Bede. :goodjob:

Abu has to be dealt with brains, not power. He is far superior to us in the amount of troops. The AI always builds tons of infantry... that will be a tough bite. Some discussion on how to make it would be good. :)

yoshi74 - somewhere away
Sir Bugsy

Bede
pindicator - UP!
Ankka - on deck

REMEMBER: 24h to post a got it, 48h to post the save.

Our biggest problem is we cannot see the resource that allows him to build infantry so so a surgical strike to pillage the resource is no feasible and we don't have the troops to take a meat axe to the body of Arabia.

The Aztecs have cavalry and were very aggressive with them in their opening shots. If they start moving west in force, we could follow in their tracks, letting them absorb the Arab thrusts and picking off the wounded.

Our flanks are secure unless Hannibal changes his allegiance. I don't think we have the "stinky" for dragging to keep him in the hunt if he does, unfortunately. And he could be more than a nuisance in the east if he does. Si far his usefulness has been limited to keepng Abu's only cavalry in the east busy picking off his little towns, rather than our resource colonies.

So there is tuppence worth...

Cannons are the most effective way to deal with infantry when attacking with cavs. Probably need to go with one stack of cannon/cavs/muskets and slowly march on Mecca.

I agree, artillery is a thing the AI has never managed to handle. Enough cannons and they will be on their knees after some bombardment. :hammer:

Inherited Turn, 1600AD
For my turns it looks like I will be building up forces, razing Shura and then moving on.

Military stands at:
14 Muskets
7 Cavalry (3 in army)
19 Cannons

For diplomacy, we have a trade open with Carthage for Magnetism; it will help keep them on our side so I'm taking it:

ank06_1600ad_trade.jpg

This best part about this is that Carthage has furs in their borders in the west.
I will use the slaves in the west to block off anyone from settling near key resources. And with Carthage spread out so much, I've little doubt they won't last the 20 turns.
Set minimum research to Steam Power, hiring a scientist at Entremont, putting the town on a small starvation. When it gets near starving, we'll switch to another town for our scientist.
America and Carthage both have Nationalism, but the Arabs are far advanced.

IBT-
Zulus ask to renegotiate peace. I accept.
Arab cavalry kills Carthage knight.
Arab infantry kills America settler pair.
Aztec cavalry kills Arab infantry.
Arab cavalry shows in the west.

Turn 1, 1605AD
Can get a worker out of an MA with Zulu against Arabs, but don't know if it's worth it in case we want to call for peace later.
Wow, I don't know about Suhar... our cannons just went 0/15 against it.
Cavalry kills arab cavalry in west, -1HP and promo.
Cavalry kills barb hut in west.
IBT-
Two muskets killed by infantry, despite being fortified on a hill and helped by cannons; we lose 2 cannons.
We lose one of our worker-shielders.
Aztecs destroy the Zulu

Turn 2, 1610AD
Kill two arab cavalry in east.
move some muskets and cannons towards army on mountain; hope I put enough muskets with the cannons to survive the trip.
Carthage now has Steam Power.
Kill a popoulation in Suhar.
IBT-
America and Arabia sign a peace treaty.
Lose a cavalry and a slave.
Arabs have artillery on our army; they attack with two infantry which both lose; 4 more infantry show up.

Turn 3, 1615AD
Suhar can wait; we have more pressing needs right now; move all attack forces from Suhar to reinforce our troops as the Arabs seem to be heading for our cities.
Kill a cavalry and an infantry.
IBT-
Things are going bad... Arabs kill a cavalry (which didn't retreat) and 3 muskets. It's absurd how poorly our muskets are doing right now; even fortified they are not standing up to the Arab infantry.
Arabs build Bukhara NE of our army, preventing it from healing any further. It also essentially cuts off our troops from our homeland, and that is a very bad thing right now. In fact, the Arabs now march past us and towards our cities!

Turn 4, 1620AD
Arab cavalry and infantry are marching on our cities; I am sending this to the forums for ideas now. Will marshal what troops we have in the west, but that is but 1 or 2 cavalry and muskets.

Here's the situation:
ank06_1620ad_dire.jpg

I'll finish my turns after I get the input from the team. May not be til late tonight as I have to work at 5pm PST.

The stack SE of the Arab town is the army, a cavalry, 4 muskets, and 15 cannon. With how the muskets have been doing, to move them risks losing all of them, yet not moving them risks our cities. Sadly, I did not see the settler coming.

Edit: I've attached the save for people to look at.

The reason you didn't see the settler coming is because of the rails. Don't feel bad.

Things are dire. I didn't expect the Americans to fold so badly. I would try and bring them back into the war if it doesn't cost too much.

An indication on just how badly we're doing => it appears the Aztecs are our best ally right now. The Carthaginians appear like they are getting their heads handed to them also.

Somehow we need to get some of the Arab supply lines cut. I know, that is easier said than done.

I would keep our forces on that mountain and try and disrupt the Arabs from there as much as possible. Use the cavs for skirmishing along our frontier.

If we just got Replaceable Parts... but that is too expensive, I guess.

Not good at all, this is a very hard situation. But look what Bugsy said, ,he has the wisdom in his words.

Okay, like Bugsy said then... disrupt with mountain forces and destroy with cavs (while keeping them alive)
And like Ankka said, get replaceable parts :p

Turn 4, 1620AD
Sign America into an MA versus China for Iron, Horses, and 6gpt.
Get the army out of Dodge; it needs to heal badly, so it's off to Alesia, and out of danger from Arab forces thanks to our ROPs with America and Azteca.
Redline with cannons an infantry and kill it with a cav, -1HP.
IBT-
Bleaker yet...
Arabs are still killing our fortified muskets on the mountain w/ cannon support.
One musket redlines an infantry.
The second wins, and we get a leader.
A third infantry retreats a cav, and a fourth kills it.
A fifth infantry loses to our musket. Those troops are not going to hold out much longer; they need to heal.
America loses the town of Ibabanago. The rifle didn't even hurt that cav. And now our leader has nowhere safe to escape to.
We lose our supply of wines.

Turn 5, 1625AD
Army moves into Alesia.
Now is our chance to raise Bukhara; it's only defender is a 2/4 infantry. However, our only attacker is a 3/5 cavalry. It will save our troops if it succeeds.
Cav did no damage, and retreated.
Moved the leader out, because our SOD at Bukhara has only three defenders, none with more than 2HP. It is possible for the Arabs to take him, as he is in arab territory, but it is a risk that I think is necessary.
IBT-
3 muskets die on the mountain; we kill on infantry in the process.
All those cannons are about to go down... only a red-lined cavalry is left to defend.
Two cavs produced.

Turn 6, 1630AD
Redline all infantry around mountain.
Army rests.
Leader heads into hiding in the mountains south of Lugdunum.
Workers begin forestry project to help slow down any future Arab advance.
IBT-
Infantry kills cavalry, and we lose 15 cannon. Sorry, but I never saw a window to move them.
Carthage cavalry kills unseen arab defender in Ibabanago.

Turn 7, 1635AD
Switch Alesia and Entremont to muskets and short rush for ~160g each; switch back to cavalry, due next turn.
IBT-
Barbs destroy both our unprotected spice colonies.
Two cavs produced.
The Aztecs are starting to fold in the west.

Turn 8, 1640AD
Cav army kills 2/4 infantry in Ibabanago, -3HP.
This is why we are losing... cav loses to cav in Ibabanago, w/o doing a damage.
The RNG hates me... -2HP on enemy cav; we lose another.
Elite cav redlines before winning; we raise the city and capture 4 slaves.
How is it that we cannot win a battle with 6 attack vs 3 defense, and yet they cannot lose a battle of 6 attack vs 4 defense fortified on a mountain! [pissed]
Next task is to disconnect most roads between Arabia and ourselves.
IBT-
Horses colony overrun by barbs -- crap, that was our only one. I thought we had another. Ah, we do, but with our deal to America, they get the horses first. Better than losing our rep, I guess.
Arabs kill our redlined cav.

Turn 9, 1645AD
Musket and slave move towards northeastern horse to get our cavs back online. Suppose I need to watch that saltpeter colony as well; there's just too much going wrong right now.
Wanted to use the leader to rush a cav, but will just wait for that to get online first.
Army kills Arab cav, -2HP.
IBT-
Incense and Saltpeter colonies overrun :wallbash: There's just nobody in the west to deal with that one barb.
Alesia riots. Lux to 10% to compensate.

Turn 10, 1650AD
Army to Alesia to heal up.
Horse colony re-established.
Short-rush a cav in Entremont.
Rush a musket in Ludgdunum.
Wow, I survived my 10.

Military:
7 Musket
6 Cavalry (3 in army)
2 Cannon (located in Alesia)
1 Leader, which I would use to rush a cavalry in Lugdunum next turn with.

We seem to be screwed, but might as well play it to the end. Arabs are going after the Aztecs right now, then probably they will finish off the Americans, and then us. If we want we can try to take the fight against Bakhara, but I don't know how that will help us, or even if we can succeed.

Here's a pic
