Ank07 - Plain Deity

570
Fiddle with citizen assignments to get 3 turn military where possible (musket/Ansar/cat)
Check on trades for Metallurgy and it will take cash, credit and salpeter to get it done.

India comes calling and wants an alliance against the Chinese, wouldn't be prudent at this juncture.

580
Found Aleppo on hill above Trondheim
Found Fez between Trondheim and Bergen
Short rush temples for most of our gold

600
Ottomans start Universal Suffrage.

610
Moving workers and troops east.

620
Found Shiraz between Fez and Stavanger partial rush barracks.

640
Egypt joins with China against the Indians.
Spain joins in against the Indians
Gems deal expires with Ottomans and Damascus riots. Other cities are on the verge. Hire a bunch of clowns

660
Fire clowns and put lux to 10%.
Ottomans start Shakespeares
Americans start Shakespeares

670
Start pulling workers back from the front. The Chinese have shown no offensive troops in the area, just rifles.

I waited one turn too long as during the interturn the Chinese border at Trondheim expanded and pushed back against Aleppo. Our cats are now one exposed move from hitting Trondheim.

There are no longer any deals available for Metallurgy. There were only two candidates and one of them has the resource (salpeter) that wwas going to be part of the trade and the other (India) is too precarious a trading partner right now for any resource deals and isn't interested. If we go up against the Chinese it will have to be with the Americans as the are the only ones not allied with China right now.

The war with China has three targets: Trondheim, Oslo and Stockholm. If we can take all three of those town right away then we should be ok, failing to take one will expose us to railed-in reinforcements.

There is a Chinese saltpeter source outside Stockholm. That may be the only one as I cannot find others on the map.

There are Chinese rifles in our territory that can be used as a pretext for war.

Sorry for truncated log but not much happened bveyond moving troops to east and preparing roads to new towns. I will try and post pictures and a campaign plan tomorrow evening.

Ah! Haha, it is my turn after Bede, isn't it? And to think that with two SGs where I follow Bede, I'd be on top of it.

Excellent news: I just finished my spanish portfolio and am officially done with homework (unless they want me to do an internship portfolio, which they may, but that'll be cake), and therefore have more time to play Civ3!

Not-so-excellent news: You may want to swap me with the next person. Thursday is chocked full of RL stuff, and I will not be able to play until Friday evening if even then. In fact, please do swap me tho I may ask for that to turn into a skip if I can't get it on Friday (cause this weekend is my little bro's h.s. graduation).

More excellent news: My graduation present came early -- a 2.8 P4 w/ hyperthreading and 9800 Radion Pro. Granted, it's overkill on Civ, but I'm eye-balling HL2. Ah, and I do have Civ3 already installed and running

K, peace out.

Hey, I know I said I could play now, but looking at Bede's notes and at the save, I am positively stumped as to what to do. It looks like Bede was gearing us up towards war, and even implying that I should begin the attack, however there is no discussion, no battle plan, and in my opinion no real army for taking on Rifles. Our army of 19 Ansars would take out maybe one town of 3 rifles and I doubt our cats would do anything -- they barely did against muskets; Bede says that in order to succeed we'd have to take out three: Oslo, Stockholm, Trondheim. Anyway, I do not feel confident about goign to war with no discussion, and I do not feel confident about postponing war and letting China slip farther away in tech (don't want them getting infantry before we attack). So I am going to post a screenshot, ask people to give discussion, and then take off for my brother's graduation this weekend. Sorry, it's just a hectic time of the year with my graduation and his graduation and everyone leaving and whatnot. So I am going to have to be skipped.

If I were to play I would not go to war, and instead just build up more units. I don't know if that's a good idea, however, considering China's position (and soon to be cultural pressure). So here's the screenie:

Edit: looks like an AIM message got caught in there. Funny

We need to fight China soon. I'm for war, but perhaps not exactly at the beginning of your turn. 19 Ansars might be just a few short, but OTOH, if we attack all 3 cities simultaniously, or quickly 1 after the other; we have 19 free Ansars to counter Chinese counterattacks. If 19 are too few, build some more !
But we will need allies, no matter what.

More troops are needed, anda fast blitz war. Attack like the wind, they won't know what hit them...;)

:hammer:

Kinda what I was thinkin'.

But I must admit I shared pin's feelings of dread even while I was trying to set it up.

Sorry again, but this is usually the point of the game where I seriously comtemplate starting a new one. But that's what SGs are good for: community support to get you through the tough times.

Again, I wanted to tell you guys quick here that I can't play until Monday; I'm leaving for my little bro's highschool graduation in about 30 minutes. Just skip me over this round. But after this weekend my schedule should seriously start to open up a lot.

I agree with building up. How many ansars do you think we'll need? 30? I would feel a lot better about it if we could have cannons by then, too. And we should bring in those last few MDIs we have to take the first attacks and (hopefully) soften up the troops.

Hey, I'm back from my bro's h.s. graduation. Sorry again, and since nobody else took it I will get to it tomorrow morning. Wanted to get a crackin' on them tonight, but of course they needed me to stay at work late. It's cool, tho; the tips were good. Anyway, I'm up in SGOTM2 first, but I plan on finishing my turns on this one as well. If somebody wants to play in before me, then by all means do so, but I will get this one in tomorrow.

Ok, I'm back.

Next one who want it will get it.

I'm way tired, I was on a child camp looking that they slept in the night... so I didn't sleep. nNow if I started to play the turns I'd propably do stupid mistakes...

Inherited Turn, 670AD
Change Fustat from Ansar (due in 14) to Cat (due in 1)
Steal a mined hill from Bodo, giving it to Yamana. Tried to up Bodo's courthouse, but no matter how many shields I give it, they're all corrupt. Yamana, however, goes up to 2spt with the second mined hill.
IBT-
We lose our furs.
India demands ... silks and 63gpt!!! I've never seen a tribute like that before. Since they're almost dead I tell them to stuff it.

Turn 1, 680AD
Somehow there was no scientist last turn. So Metalurgy comes a turn later.
Can buy Metallurgy from Ottomans for 29gpt, 201g, silks & WM, but the trade route goes through China, so I do not do it.
IBT-
Spain wants Chemistry. Too bad they don't have anything.

Turn 3, 700AD
Cats roll towards front lines. Trade around world maps. Wow, look at that Ottoman ingenuity:

ank07_700ad_ottoman_stupidity.jpg

Turn 4, 710AD
IBT- Just as I was about to buy them into it, Americans declare on China!

Turn 5, 720AD
Hmm... That cav army is going to hit Trondheim next turn; I am going to risk that they will not take the city with the army & 2 cavs.
I am glad I did not renegotiate the furs deal. Next turn our incense with Egypt expires and we will not piss anyone off by declaring on China.
IBT-
America attacks Trondheim: 2 cavs redline rifles then die, the cav army takes out a third. another rifle on top, so there are at least 3 in trondheim.
China destroys India. They retreat a cav to a musket and lose another battle that we can only see half of.

Turn 6, 730AD
Cancel deal with Egypt for Incense and Ivory. MA with America against China and get Metallurgy for 56gpt. Goal is to ride the coattails of the American invasion taking as many weakened cities as possible.
Lux to 20% to counter lux loss. Hire a taxman in Bodo.
I am going to risk one more turn waiting on Trondheim. There are at least 3 defenders. Cav army will take out one. 5 knights left, which I do not think will take out 2 rifles fortified in a 9 pop city. Hope I'm right.
Advance cats on Trondheim. And then I remembered I could have upgraded them first. Nah, I didn't have the turn to spare.
Unsure how many cats I want to upgrade (want money to upgrade ansars), so I only do 5 in key towns.
Egypt will join the battle for 29gpt. I'll leave that up to the Americans.
Well, silly me. Ottomans do have a trade route because they have metallurgy. So I do the following:

ank07_730ad_tech.jpg

Sadly, it prevents upgrading troops, but I think we wanted that tech ASAP.
Research set to Education. If we want to try for the Great Library longshot, then switch off, but it's the only necessary tech to research.
IBT-
Americans lose a knight to Trondheim and do not attack with other knights. Cav army kills a rifle and runs away, as do other knights.
Chinese cav loses to fortified Ansar.

Turn 7, 740AD
Upgrade an Ansar to cavalry.
Catapults hit 2 out of 12: one citizen killed (down to 7), and one rifle wounded.
With the Americans backing off Trondheim, I will wait on the attack and keep bombarding, hopefully getting the town to pop 6 or less.
Spain has Education. I will wait for discussion before trading, although I really would do so -- however I do not know if others believe the Great Library Heist is possible/probable. I don't believe Spain has anyone else to trade Education to, anyway.
IBT-
Our first cavalry finish production.
Uh-oh, the wrong way... Egypt allies with China against America. Looks like it may turn into a World War.
This is almost humorous, if it weren't us. Cavalry kills musket in Muskat, and then

ank07_740ad_depose.jpg

-- we lose our furs. Half our empire riots.

Turn 8, 750AD
Wanted to raise Lux, but that put us in the red, so I hire entertainers, taxmen, and a scientist.
Looks like China has put Trondheim down into pop 6 for us.

Seige of Trondheim:
Cats go 1 for 13: kill a citizen.
Cavalry kills elite rifle.
Ansar does -1HP and retreats
Ansar redlines rifle and dies (promo rifle).
Ansar redlines, kills 3/4 rifle and promos.
Ansar kills conscript rifle.
Ansar kills conscript rifle.
Ansar redlines, kills conscript rifle.
Ansar retreats, no damage done.
Ansar redlines 2/4 rifle, dies.
Ansar redlines, kills conscript rifle.
Ansar kills 1/4 rifle and we have Trondheim.
I  the RNG :) I lost less ansars here than against muskets when attacking Scandinavia.
We now control Pyramids and Sistines.
Trondheim set to barracks.
n/m on that RNG thing... Ansar retreats to Longbow.
Ansar kills longbow flawlessly.
We are short of cash, so I trade America Wines + 5g for Ivory & 6gpt.
Income raises from 18 (before deal) to 25gpt.
IBT-
Egypt signs MA with China against us.
Ansar kills a rifle, retreats from a second, and is killed by a third.
Rider kills an ansar in Shiraz.
Resistance in Trondheim ends.

Turn 9, 760AD
Hurry walls in Shiraz for 24g.
Cats go 2 for 6 against rifle, redlining it.
Rest of cats fortify in Shiraz; reinforce the town.
Ansar kills longbow, -1HP.
Ansar kills Cav, -1HP.
Scout muscat with cav, then retreat it: it has a rifle on top.
IBT-
Egypt builds Shakespeare.
Egypt took 4 American cities IBT! Americans have no cities in the west except for Aarhus now. I should have bought them in against China, dang it.

Turn 10, 770AD
Cats go 3/11 against a chinese cav. Elite ansar mops up.
Upgrade Ansar to chinese Cav for 40g.
Cats go 0/3 against chinese rifle. Cannons go 2/2.
Ansar kills egypt knight, -2HP.
Cavalry kills 2/4 chinese rifle, -1HP and promo.
Cavalry kills egypt cav, -1HP.
Lots of troops still are only fortified. Troops in Trondheim will be healed by next turn. We need money to upgrade cavs, and we need Egypt to go away. I guess I blundered here; I over-estimated America's strength and figured we didn't want Egypt to become too big like China now.
The good news is that once America settles for peace we'll get our money back.

Remember, we can get Education and everything else Spain has for Chemistry. However, if America gets pushed back too far, maybe the Great Library Heist will be a little more plausible.
Sorry for the hole I put us in. I tried to take what I thought was an advantage and with not signing Egypt into an MA ended up possibly ruining it.

Here's the current battlefield. I took priority of killing cavs over rifles, but both are a problem:

ank07_770ad_battlefront.jpg

Did I do bad? I'm willing to learn

Edit: Just realized, that we may have lost our deal with America when Egypt took all those towns. If so, our rep is hurt. I'd hate to think I managed to do all that in just the last 5 turns. :(

Nice job, pin. :goodjob:
