Ann Coulter: Genius or Insane?

How the hell could she make the 100 most intellectual people in America? That would tell me more about the state of America's intellectual scene than of Ann Coulter's intelligence. What bull****. Perhaps the top 100 people who "appear" intellectual thanks to constant media praise and daily airtime..
She is called on of the top 100 intellectuals because her arguments are very difficult to pick apart. Put it another way, she makes even the people that disagree with her think long and hard to find rebuttals. Still another way, because she writes very, very well. To denegrate her intelligence simply because she says things you disagree with is empty noise. She is bringing evidence and arguments to the table; you must do the same. For what its worth I dont agree with her either on most issues, but the fact that she has taken the unpopular side and made some points that stick firmly tells you all you should need to know.

And for those of you who think she's attractive, please stop, it is highly disturbing. Before I even knew who she was politically, I realized she was an ugly old hag in makeup that was somehow acknowledged as good looking.
Now this is disturbing. While she is not a professional looker, to deny that she is attractive in a severe way is ... poor judgement. Give what is due, where adn to whom it is due.

Couldnt agree more. Even a pinko liberal like me has no problem appreciating her good looks. My dangly bits (as kafka2 would say) have no party affiliation. I actually find smart, good looking right wing broads to be a turn on.

How is namecalling intelleuctual?

She makes arguments?

Put it another way, she makes even the people that disagree with her think long and hard to find rebuttals.

Doesn't lend credence to her "arguments" themselves - it means you need to know your stuff in order to know why she's wrong. Like Limbaugh's often touted theory [at least it was a few years ago] that volcanos cause all the chlorine in our atmosphere, not industry. Eventually some scientists or smart guy sunk to the level of watching his show, made it widely public that chlorine-compounds from volcanos are soluble [and therefore would fall with rain], and Limbaugh retreated that point. He didn't admit he was wrong, he just never mentioned it again.

Who knows how much other stuff these pundits - left and right - spout is total crap that they think they can pass off as accurate just because nobody bothers to go after them checking facts?

Sure, people have to "think long and hard" to "rebut Coulter's arguments". So the veracity of her arguments are now to be measured by the level of education you need to unravel her fraud? That's a pretty cynical view of politics, J.

Still another way, because she writes very, very well.

I think I could rise to the same level of literary genius if I stuck a rabies-infected pin halfway up my ass. She's a demagogue, not a writer. She uses emotional arguments, and when she does it's always used to cover up the fact she's wrong. Those are the tactics of a Hitler, not a Paine or a Jefferson.

the fact that she has taken the unpopular side and made some points that stick firmly tells you all you should need to know.

Franken has no excuse for writing idiotic, biased, and poorly researched political commentary, because he's a man. If Coulter was really so desperate for money, she could at least be a prostitute.

To be honest, seems to me she takes the extremist nonrational views because they sell better, not because she's stupid enough to believe in them.

While she is not a professional looker, to deny that she is attractive in a severe way is ... poor judgement.

And now we know the reason behind her political vituperation. She's neurasthenic. :D

Sorry, I prefer brunettes, not insipid blondes. ;)

Yes. If you cant pick up that much, why enter the conversation. A little intellectual honesty is supposed to be given.

I suppose you would say that the Nativists, the Klan, and the American Alliance [neonazis] also make "arguments".

Her words were applauded by National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice, Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson, and Lynne Cheney (wife of Vice President Cheney), all of whom were in attendance.

Some quotes from Brian Lamb's Booknotes interview with Coulter (Aug 11):

COULTER: There is no serious dialogue or engagement of ideas between the left and the right in this country.

...and that is because...

COULTER: There are no good Democrats.

"I love Texas Republicans!" she said. "They're these beautiful women, they're so great-looking, they're completely loaded. They're dripping in this gorgeous jewelry, they're really funny and sarcastic and smart. Americans are so cool, and they're such parochial idiots here in New York."

Coulter says of the Kennedys:

"This is as we have come to expect from a family of heroin addicts, statutory rapists, convicted and unconvicted female-killers, cheaters, bootleggers and dissolute drunks known as "Camelot." Why would anyone want such people as their "good friends"?"

That's a cursory list, J.

All right, I retract the blond comment. I know plenty of intelligent blonds, I wasn't enabling the old stereotypes ;)

I forgot this one when I made the thread. Its such a shame - it reveals what a maniac she is.

I really dont see how bigots like her get press time.

Because this sort of clap-trap appeals to a large audience in the States :(

The embodiment of such crap is Donald Rumsfield who I detest absolutely.

Having alienated minorities, women, liberals, environmentalists and the world outside American borders I'd say her politics are presented by media outlets for the benefit of their pocketbooks. As P2 has already stated, she's a demagogue. Her arguments serve little intellectual meat and what little they do contain are wrapped in layers of inflammatory remarks aimed at eliciting intense rage in her opponents. She plays its cool and calm while her debating partner fights the urge to choke the ***** with her microphone cord.

Her political ideologies would seem to place her well right of conservative and under the reactionary column. She wants to bring the world back a good five or six centuries. Or maybe just five or six decades ... and a quick trip to the Berlin and Rome of that era.

What concerns me is not so much what she's saying, but who's listening. If the United States economy continues its course along these current fiscal duldrums and terrorism once more rears its ugly head within her borders, people like Ann Coulter can and will rise to the forefront of the political scene with the types of arguments that appeal to people's emotions, not their reasoning.

As much as humankind would like to pride itself on having achieved such great heights in rationalism, we're still very much prisoners of our own emotions. Ann Coulter is a very clever warden.
