Another annoying "helpful" feature from Google

I just realised I cannot remember the last time I went to Google's page to search something (just doing it through my browser). The only, somewhat, recent time I can recall going there at all was to play Pac-Man.

I believe these are preferences you can toggle - number of results per page and whatever this instant search is. My settings don't match the OP's. At best the "finish suggesting a phrase" is slightly annoying, I don't really find it funny either but it doesn't matter.

There are far worse user interface problems with several other things I'd complain about.

And for Google specifically, this doesn't even top the list of problems. My first and foremost complaint about google is that their search engine doesn't really search for things the way it should - it does not implement common logic even though it should implement an AND at the very least. Instead, the system of putting things in "quotes" fails pretty miserably.

It does, though. The AND operator is implied. Maybe you're just not using it right.

I liked that blog until FailBlog took it over and put these huge ugly FAIL words on them

I hate when a big fail is put onto pictures,it is not like we can't see that already.

I've been shielded from Google Instant (Just Add Keystrokes!) by my browser, Opera. Instead of going to www.google.com, I just type "g " and whatever I want to search for in my address bar. No search suggestions, no loading a search page before I hit enter. Google doesn't know what I'm searching for before I hit enter. It's kind of nice. Especially given some of the search suggestions. They can be hilarious, but they can also be disgusting. I really wouldn't want some of them to show up if there were top images results included for them as well.

My least-favorite Google feature of late is the updating-every-second-or-two social networking "news" that shows up in some search results. The regular news articles in regular search results make sense if I'm searching for Civilzation V on September 21st or something like that, and are useful, as they're well written. But I'm not going to learn anything useful from someone writing 73 characters with 29 abbreviations about a topic. Just take me to whatever the New York Times or someone reputable wrote about it.

I was going to suggest AltaVista for a classic search engine, but it appears it's been updated recently . And they took away the one feature of it I really liked that I couldn't find anywhere else (searching between a certain date range, not just from x months ago until now). Now it's similar to Yahoo search :(. They even made its interface the same as Yahoo's (although AltaVista find a whole lot more results and orders them differently). Bummer.

Google has some cool featers though, the Google News Archive has old newspapers and Google Books have books and newspapers and Google Groups now has old usenet archives. Theres also the thing for university papers somewhere. Its a lot of fun.

Google Scholar is an excellent new feature.

Priority Inbox for Gmail is fairly useless.

Google voice seems like an interesting new thing although I have never tried it and have not heard if anyone is using it or not.

Google Scholar is an excellent new feature.

Thats the thing I couldnt think of!

I dont really like the new Google Docs thing. I have it turned off. A lot of the features are missing and I dont need to adjust the marjins.

Auto-search showed me this:

I approve.

Yeah I was trying to find the original one and could only find the failblog one, I preferred it without the tired old "FAIL" stuff too.

Yeah I went to it one day and got redirected. The FAIL makes it seem real corny. I mean seriously its terrible already, why bother?
