Just for the sake of accuracy idiotic Stand Your Ground laws are not the same thing as Castle Doctrine laws which would be in application for the situation described in this thread.

I picked up a motion activated lamp on my way back from work today and set it up in the window. If I had one to spare I'd also set up a motion activated camera to see what sets it off.

You could try recording one frame every few seconds with an ordinary camera or web-cam, and not worrying about the motion activation. Finding the right section on the video would be easy with motion-activated lighting.

We had troubles with someone letting air out of a tire for a while. I took an old camera, stuck it in the living room window, and recorded lovely time-lapse movies of my car sitting on the street. The camera was pretty obvious; we never caught anyone, but the tire stopped losing air.
