Anyone fancy trying a chariot rush here?

I've failed at this 3 times now, wondering if anyone would like to give it a try and maybe show me how it's done.

I probably messed up the save somehow, but it's Emperor/epic and I'm playing as the aztecs, attempting to chariot rush Ramesses. I feel like I'm getting chariots out fast enough and teching the right path, but it's just not working out.

Worldbuilder save wasn't working for me so I'm just attaching a regular non modded save, huts/events off.

Should I be abandoning this plan when the target founds a religion? He has 2 buffer cities up before 2000BC giving him a bit of time to get more archers in 40% cultural defense after I DoW

It's really hard say with only the starting save. Perhaps a later save would help.

There are horses 2W of the starting settler position, but I'm starting to think this isn't going to work. He founds Hinduism and 2 cities towards me there's no way I can rush him before he gets his second border pop either. Annoying because settling peacefully leaves me in the jungle pretty much, no way to get more than one decent city in that wont get flooded by his culture

What is exactly the problem that you are facing? Is his capital on a hill? Have you scouted his land well? Are you facing spears? How far is he?

Screenshots would help? Also someone wrote a strategy guide on how to execute a chariot rush. I suggest you find it and read it.

He doesn't have spears but he is on a hill with a holy city capital. Last time I lost 8 chariots to 4 archers

You need a ratio of 3:1 vs archers on a hill in a city. And don't upgrade your chariots. Save the upgrade for if they live. Lets you go back in for another fast attack.

Thats your problem right there. You need 3:1 for chariot vs archer on a hill.

Wasn't too bad, did it on the first try. I definitely cut some corners knowing the end goal was just a chariot rush, but...:

Spoiler :

The capitol's forest was ripe for chopping, and there was a good spot for a second city that was towards the villain and had floodplains & forested hills.

Research: AH -> AG -> Wheel -> Mining -> BW

Capital: Worker -> Barracks -> Warrior -> Warrior -> Settler -> Worker -> Worker -> Chariot*
Improved: Cow -> Rice -> Elephant -> Horse

Put the second city NE, between floodplains and hills/forest
2nd City: Monument -> Barracks -> Chariot*

Just chopped the heck out of the chariots and had about 18 when I attacked in two stacks in 1225BC:

He just had 1-2 archers and 1-2 axes in each city when I attacked. Economy was putrid before the war, but that was fixed when 3/4 of the chariots died and we got all the wargold:

That definitely helped, I waited for 12 chariots this time and went straight for the capital and took it instead of starting on the outer cities. Took out copper and mopped up from there. I was trying to rush it too much, DoW'ing at around 2000BC instead of waiting for more chariots

Hi there!

In general chariotsrushing someone involves:

a) They're close enough (obv). General rule is if you can't fit 2-3 cities between you and them, you can rush them. (English are also a great target here)
b) Scouting out the land. Go around it, and preferrably through it, noting defenders and metal.
c) Get set up for rushing. 2 cities in close proximity with as much forest as possible around both, 2 workers. Barracks in at least your capitol. Don't worry too much about improving everything around the cities. Do what you can before the chopping begins.
d) Get an army. Chop everything in sight. Whip some if you can. I prefer at least 12-15 chars before attacking (depending on defenders obviously, but it's usually enough when your enemy is expanding). Ofcourse it does seem you could get by with a lot fewer at this level.
e) Road to enemy (start early, and complete when you're allmost done building your forces)
f) Find a point of entry that'll allow you to attack in 2 turns or less. Move in turn1, attack turn 2 (or move+attack turn 1 ;)). This way your enemy won't be able to pull in reinforcements much...

And then you win, hopefully. And if you're lucky you get to do it again to the poor AI who was paid to go in against you :crazyeye:

Cheers

No, definitely upgrade chariots that aren't finishing off weak (<1 strength) archers. If you don't, the expected value of damage takes a big enough hit that you'll average 3.5 or 4 chariots per archer.

And very few rushes can hit before the second border pop. Hit the capital first, of course, because you're going to lose momentum quickly.

Look for someone who wrote a chariot rush guide. Also if you go for barracks only in your capital, which is a considerably stronger rush, route all your chops to your capital.
