AP-2 Suleiman's conquest (RFC)

blizzrd, can you be more specific on what you did differently to achieve that stability?

Also, what did you do to spike research enough so that we got the techs needed for the Cristo Redentor 2 turns earlier?

Turn 0: 1811AD
Our economy is 70% science and we have 62g +201gpt. Electricity is due in 3 turns and our vassal Germany will learn Biology in 11 turns.

I stop Gaziantep from starving by working an extra tile. Steal 58g from Germany. Steal 26g from Spain. We have more than enough espionage points against both civs and can get our spies back in time to steal Biology from Germany with full discount easily.

Our default city advisors prefer spy specialists, which is not the fastest way to research Radio. Scientist specialists are better and we don't need the espionage points from spy specialists in any case. I force a lot of scientists and engineer specialists in cities which previously had spies.

Cancel Sheep for 4gpt and Wheat for 3gpt to Japan. Trade Marble for 8gpt instead. Sell Divine Right to Germany for 120g. Trade Marble to Ethiopia for 1gpt. Cancel Wine to Japan for Gold (we already have Gold). Sell Liberalism to China for 370g. We have 4 surplus Dye resources and both Germany and Spain have unhappiness in at least one city. I gift Dye to both Germany and Spain.

Istanbul puts Stock Exchange on hold to rush a Factory immediately with our new cash reserves. We have the Kremlin, so we may as well make use it while we are in Universal Suffrage.

Turn 1: 1814AD
Start work on a whole bunch of Coal Plants. Istanbul finishes the Factory and now will complete the Stock Exchange in 5 turns (shaved 2 turns). Our Airships begin scouting South America. I split some more of our grouped Airships and reposition to various cities for more map scouting next turn.

Turn 2: 1817AD
Complete map scouting of South America, Greenland and NorthWest Passage. Some cities now start building Wealth allowing our science to rise to 80%. I spread Judaism in Exeter and order up two more Jewish Missionaries for our cities (currently in revolt) in Ireland. WM trading of our newly scouted areas raises 75g. Trade Wheat to Japan for 1gpt.

Turn 3: 1820AD
We are Shaky (-17) but rising. Electricity comes in, choose Radio next (5 turns). Steal another 63g from Germany in Berlin (capitals give the most cash this way). Start Olympic Park in Serbia (can't spell the name of the city as it has a funny character near the end!). Rush factories in both Sparta and Atina. Airships scout Africa from bases in various Ethiopian cities. Our economy finishes at 90% Science, 105g +39gpt.

Turn 4: 1823AD
Start Wembley in Chicago to assist cultural push against Washington. Barcelona flips to us. I keep it and then immediately liberate it back to Spain. A Turkish revolt occurs in Samara. WM trading for 100g. Rush a Courthouse in Exeter. Our troops pummel the independent (former Russian) city of Magnitorsk and reduce it to one wounded Longbow defender.

We finish this turn still Shaky (-12) but still rising. Our economy is now 100% science, 39g +63gpt.

Turn 5: 1826AD
Spain captures Magnitorsk. Pentagon completed in Gaziantep. At 100% science, our economy can now handle some cities producing Research. Radio is now due in 2 turns. Spread Judaism in Cork. Steal 48g from Germany in Berlin (I built a couple of extra spies to increase the frequency at which we could do this). Sign a Defensive Pact with Russia. Sell Liberalism to Spain for 60g. Rush a Coal Plant in Sparta.

We finish Shaky (-6) and our economy is 100%, 79g +81gpt.

Turn 6: 1829AD
Japan cancels our Rice/Silk/5gpt for Horse deal. This makes a number of our cities dangerously unhealthy. We can only renegotiate Sheep for 5gpt with Japan, they won't trade Rice or Silk to us.

The decision earlier to embargo Khmer is not looking so great at this stage. Khmer still refuses to talk to us and probably will stay this way for another 20 turns at least. I never choose this diplomatic option for myself and only occasionally force vassals to embargo certain nations for this reason.

Stock Exchange is finished in Istanbul. Apostolic Palace begins a vote for Open Borders. Turkish revolt in Manchester. Spread Judaism in Belfast. Rush a Jail in Exeter. Build an Explorer near Cuba to grab the goody hut before Miami's culture expands to collect it for America. We can then send this explorer to Easter Island and finally Australia for the last map scouting.

Sell Divine Right to Persia for 50g. Spread some espionage spending across civs that aren't our vassals so that we can see what they are researching each turn.

We finish Shaky (-3) and our economy is 100% science, 84g + 190gpt. Radio is coming in next turn.

Turn 7: 1832AD
Radio learnt, choose Railroad next. Olympic Park finished in Serbia and we now have 10 turns of Golden Age remaining. Turkish revolt in Dalma. Start Graceland in Denzili, Christo Redentor in Gaziantep and Eiffel Tower in Paris (seems appropriate!). Steal 22g from Spain in Madrid. Not worth coming back to steal from Spain next time though I will send this spy to Berlin instead. Get 34g from Cuban goody hut. Remove more spy specialists from various cities.

Now that we are building a few wonders (and thus less wealth), our economy has to change to 90% science. We have 38g +301gpt. We are Shaky (-1).

Turn 8: 1835AD
Persia captures Salalah and liberates it to us. Given we are stable enough I destroy this useless city as we couldn't liberate it back to Persia. Samara (SE of Moscow) flips to us (from Germany). I disband it, we had it fully surrounded by our culture and our vassals wouldn't have accepted it.

Vikings break free from China. Trade Marble to Vikings for 2gpt. National Gallery started in Moscow. Rush Courthouse in Cork. Trade Philosophy to Russia for 60g. Our economy finishes 100% science and we have 65g + 190gpt. We are Shaky (-2).

Turn 9: 1838AD
Steal 51g and 46g from Berlin. Great Spy is born in Istanbul. We now have 1GSpy and 1 GScientist waiting. Trade Copper to Spain for 6gpt. Trade Fur to China for Rice. This finally starts to alleviates some of our health issues in our biggest cities. Biology soon will also help.

Turn 10: 1841AD
Upgrade a bunch of our troops in America from Riflemen to Infantry. Wembley is finished in Chicago. Rush Jail in Cork and Courthouse in Belfast. Trade Footballs to China for Silk. Upgrade Marble to Ethiopia from 1gpt to 2gpt. Steal Biology from Germany and set them to research Medicine next for us (11 turns).

We finish this turn Stable (+4) and our economy is 100% science with 598g +275gpt.

Turn 11: 1844AD (Turn 369)
Railroad is learnt, choose Combustion next. Christo Redentor completed in Gaziantep. Begin Channel Tunnel in Istanbul. Adopt Free Religion. Trade Football to Russia for 3gpt. Start builidng railroads on mines and quarries and lumbermills. More troop upgrades to Infantry.

We are now Stable (+10) and will likely rise further next turn now that we have adopted Free Religion. Our economy is 100% science and we have 69g +409gpt. Eiffel Tower and Graceland will finish next turn in Paris and Denzili respectively, further boosting our stability.

blizzrd, can you be more specific on what you did differently to achieve that stability?

Also, what did you do to spike research enough so that we got the techs needed for the Cristo Redentor 2 turns earlier?

Stability:
- Spread Judaism (our state religion while in Organised Religion) to all of our cities in Engand and Ireland
- Rushed courthouses and jails in England and Ireland.
- Releasing Barcelona helped a little also.

Research/economy:
- Forced scientist and engineer specialists in cities instead of spies
- Rushed Stock Exchange in Istanbul
- Stole gold from Berlin and sold WM for cash allowing cities to go to Wealth/Research production earlier.

Very nice. I thought embargoing Khmer would drive them to collapse sooner, maybe I was mistaken.

Build more IAs and SBs in England not for the espionage but for stability.

Small cities (such as Mekkah and Jerusalem) should now focus on building missionaries all around. With our production, we can probably use the spare hammers after big builds for temples and cathedrals. The Christian cities are concentrated around Italy and the Balkans which have decent production to make missionaries in 1-2 turns. Be sure to have some Jewish missionaries ready to convert newly conquered cities.

After the major production buildings are done in England, and we have tanks (i.e. after combustion), it's time to declare war on people after switching to nationhood and police state. It's unfortunate that espionage isn't as useful in this game because we're so far ahead, but we do need the stability when we declare war. America and Aztecs should be first to die, keep only 1 city in Mexico. Don't raze those small cities in NE Canada, the Vikings will sometimes want them, and we can give them to him for stability (and come back to conquer them later). In fact, the procedure I do with trashy cities is: I conquer them, see if it can be vassalized, and if not, see if any other civ will want it, and if not, I reload and raze it. Remember that if you have a small enough enemy civ down to 1-2 cities, they will accept almost anything under the sun, including ones that are really far apart (I gave India once a city in each continent, mostly in northern Russia).

Vassalizing America would be a good option if they will submit after getting Washington and maybe Philadelphia, but only if the Aztecs are finished first (if America's becomes their master it would not count for us as their "grand" master).

Most of our future stability rises will come from liberating/giving cities away, so while it's good that we're still building/rushing IAs and SBs now, in the future, mastery of this trick is going to help a lot.

We need to keep at least 4-5 troops in Paris in case either the Dutch or the French want to respawn (I always thought Paris by itself isn't able to respawn but I've seen it), preferably 2 tanks.

BurnEmDown why don't you try the next 10 turns.

To do:
Build more IAs and SBs in England not for the espionage but for stability.

Agreed.

Yup, I started building some missionaries on that final turn infact.

After the major production buildings are done in England, and we have tanks (i.e. after combustion), it's time to declare war on people after switching to nationhood and police state.

We don't need to produce any more military units until Combustion comes in. Then build lots of tanks.

Extra troops in Paris (I think there are currently two) can be reshuffled from Moscow as insurance against French/Dutch respawns.

The trick with stability in the final stages is that ours can fluctuate wildly, from Solid to Unstable in a single turn, depending on which cities are coming out of revolt at the same time. It is one of these rapid downturns that can sometimes lead to a respawn of an extinct civ. We can generally buffer our stability with liberation (as AP described) but this only kicks in on the following turns not immediately.

We currently have 3 vassals. We can accept up to 5, but only more than 4 if we do not have any active defensive pacts. Optimal vassals for us would America and Russia. If we can capitulate these two, great, but otherwise we just conquer them to the last city. Spain will be important in cleaning up Mesoamerica and South America, also the Phillipines.

Be sure to have some Jewish missionaries ready to convert newly conquered cities.

We're in Free Religion now though. We don't have an (active) State Religion. If we swap back to OR we would still be Jewish, but I don't see the need to prioritize Judasim in conquered cites any longer?

(guess bonuses don't stack, I seem to have thought they did...)

Correct. We still don't have Banana, but we currently have all the other health resources (I think). After these, we would need Supermarkets to assist our unhealthy (largest) cities.

- Lincoln asks for a map trade. Sure why not.
- Stalin wants a DP. Nope.

You should almost always check what the AI is prepared to offer us for their WM and also what they are asking for theirs (in gold) before agreeing to the first trade that appears. We want cash for our map as a general rule, not just their map.

On the Defensive Pact request, it would have been better to accept Russia's offer. I did this during my turn replayed turn set because:
- it gives us a +4 stability bonus
- it has no negative consequences, we can still declare war on them at any stage (as they can also on us).

- Toku cancels rice/silk/5 gpt for horse. Whatever.
Rice is important for our health problems after all the recent Coal Plants/Factories that have been built. It gives +2 heath in our cities which is equivalent to an extra population point. The cancelled deal is not really something that should be dismissed quite so lightly.

For prioritizing Judaism in conquered cities, it's because the first things I build in cities I keep are:
--granary (for quicker regrowth)
--theater (more culture means less instability)
--courthouse (you know why; even though we have state property it still costs us to maintain a city)
--temple with AP hammer buildings (happiness and hammers)
--then forge/factory--usually takes too long to build by the time I go on conquest

Usually I don't have time to build other major buildings except for the closest cities (e.g. the Russian ones we're going to keep).

I don't think we'll need mass media but if we ever get there, the temple will have served its purpose.

Got it, will play soon.

T1 - Graceland built in Denver and Eiffel tower built in Paris. We fail the holy mountain quest (big deal :P). I declare war on America, seeing as it is researching Assembly Line. Take York Factory with a cavalry, moving troops towards east-coast American cities. India respawns.

T2 - GE born in Babil, I bulb him for Industialism. Captured Washington and Savannah, but lost a cannon on Savannah >_<. Washington still refuses to talk.

T3 - I take Philadelphia and Fort George but America still won't talk >_<.

T4 - Combustion is done, I switch to Fascism which will be done in 2 turns. China declares war on America. I take Boston but America won't talk, I guess it's either freedom or death for them :)

T5 - Russia goes into civil war. America will now capitulate! They give us Labrador city too, which leaves them with Miami with no defensive force whatsoever 0o.

I take a stop here, since I'm not sure what to do with all the American cities. I'll play again either in a few hours or tomorrow.

Note that our stability is -29 now because of all those conquests without occupation. I see we're still with viceroyalty.

What I would have done is finish fascism first, then switch to occupation and declare war. As soon as we become unstable, switch to police state/nationhood.

When the Americans are willing to capitulate, give them York Factory, Fort George, Labrador City, and Fort Albany and Savannah. Washington, Philly and Boston should be kept. (I used your save and liberated all of these cities and got us back to shaky (-6), but we should keep a decent number of cities in order to be able to get more stability with liberating cities in the future. We could have been stable all along if we used occupation.

While we're at war with the Americans, since the Chinese are willing to declare on them, we should have opened borders with the Chinese.

Plague has just struck, we need to regroup our troops on the mainland. Send most of them to 1 city close by, so that only 1 will die when plague strikes, then send them back out one by one.

Why are we hoarding cash? We should be buying as much infrastructure as possible since we'll need police state soon, and upgrading our frigates to destroyers would make bombardment much quicker.

We have a great spy and scientist in the capital which we're probably not going to use for a GA, might as well use the spy to go to China and see what they have (i.e. scout), and bulb the scientist.

Use our spies in Germany because they'll probably die of the plague when it strikes.

In retrospect it would be better for us to research medicine at the start of your moves rather than wait for Germany to do it.

The next targets should be Vikings and Aztecs.

Maybe you can play from my save again with the above?

Sure, no problem, but I don't understand what you mean, replay those 5 turns I did or you already replayed them and I'll continue from where you stopped?

Replay the 5 turns is meant. From my save rather than AP's though.

There is no way we should have done all that work to get the right civics and then not have adopted them before going on a conquest spree.

Didn't mean to be possessive, yes, I meant from blizzrd's save.

I try very hard to stay in US/Free Speech in my conquest games because it's the cheapest combination and you can buy buildings in your conquests. Usually I tackle one civ at a time, and when my stability absolutely needs it, I switch police state and nationhood. Then I declare war on everybody I want, bearing in mind that my foreign relations will drive my stability down, but by then I would have buffered it by such a massive empire that liberating/giving cities will buoy me up.

OK then, I'll play later today.

T0 - Switched research from Combustion to Fascism, done in 2 turns.

T1 - Graceland done in Denzili, Eiffel done in Paris, GSc built academy in Istanbul (how come we didn't build an academy there already?), GSp is moving towards China.

T2 - Arabia respawns, taking only Mecca, I upgrade Rifle to Infantry and will send him with a cavalry to take mecca in 4 or so turns (so he won't become an Arabian unit). Fascism is in, switch production to Combustion which will be done in 3 turns. Change civics to Occupation (we are stable with +9).
I declare war on America, and take York Factory and Fort George with no losses. We are now +11 stable :).

T3 - I take Washington and Philadelphia, this leaves America with 4 cities, only 2 of them being useful (Boston and Savannah). Washington still refuses to talk. We are stable (+19).

T4 - I take Boston with the loss of an Infantry and Washington capitulates, I gift him all of his cities back (he can't release at 100% of original land if he doesn't have 50% of his master's can he?). I send all troops towards Marsin (New Orleans).

T5 - Combustion is done, switch to Medicine. Russia descends into Civil war, and I take Kostroma and Kalinin from the indies. Sent 3 units towards mecca, which should be enough (if not I'll rush an Infantry or two in the cities nearby and they should do the trick). We are currently solid with +20.

This is where I take my pause. Should I attack Aztec soon and take more Russian cities simultaniously? (sp?)

Much better. Good job. :goodjob: Even Arabia respawn may turn out to be a good thing since we will capture a capital (which is even better than just a regular city). If possible, conquer some of the cities up in northern Russia and give them to the Vikings now (let him absorb the revolting citizens), and conquer the Aztecs while liberating the cities to America, just be careful to keep the capital.

We should be building a separate attack force towards the Vikings and the Chinese, preferably tanks but also cannon.

Tanks will be available at the end of my set, as soon as Industrialism is done.
Should I have kept Washington D.C.?
Will play the rest of my turns in about a couple of hours.

T5 - Gifted Kalinin and the other Russian city to the Vikings. Switched production from wealth\research to Public Transport in unhealthy cities, lowered research to 90% to keep +gpt. Solid +30.

T6 - GSpy arrives in china, and we now only need to scout Australia for the entire world map. Aztec vassalize to China. I think we'll have to amphibiously attack China with tanks, so I lower the slider to 0% for one turn for 2000 GPT, which will be used to rush-buy tanks and transports, and upgrading our galleons to transports. We shouldn't attack Aztec until we are ready to take out China. Infantry and Cavalry lost in the attack against mecca, a great general is born there (hopefully will be settled).

T7 - I upgrade all of our boats to destroyers\transports and we're outta gold again :X, slider at 0% for just one more turn. I take Mekke back. Stable +4.

T8 - I'm moving some workers back to Europe to build railroads. Plague starts in Savannah. Troops are moving in on Leningrad. Stable (0).

T9 - Congress held in 2 turns. I take Leningrad and gift it to the Vikings. Plague spreads in Istanbul, but don't worry, as Medicine will be done in 1 turn. Troops are nearing Aztec borders. Shaky (-7).

T10 - Medicine is done and I switch to Industrialism, which will be done in 4 turns. Strangely though, the plague spreads across a lot of our cities. Shaky -12.

T11 - I forgot what happened in the Congress, but the main thing is that Vikings wanted Moskva, and I refused, leading to a world war! The funny thing is, everyone declared war on us except the Vikings! (meaning China, Khmer and Japan). Khmer also got Xi'an from the Chinese, this will probably de-stablize them both. I moved out troops near Tacloco or whatever that city is called, and bombed both it and Oaxaco to 0% culture with our ships. Shaky -13.

For the next player: Do not rush-buy anything except for tanks, wait for them to be available with Industrialism. We have some workers in New Orleans waiting for the transports to take them back to Europe. After the Aztec invasion is done send the troops from Mexico to Japan. Take out Khmer and China with tanks. Also don't forget a tank or two to take out Ethiopia.

Overall we're in a good position except for this plague that apparantly stays even after medicine, which is bad. Will it be gone in a few turns or should we rush some hospitals in affected cities?

Yeah, this is my pet peeve...medicine doesn't stop plague. I thought we were going to research medicine ourselves? Did you shuffle troops to one city because I'm sure a lot of them are undefended right now, leading to unhappiness? Did you save our spies (i.e. use them to steal gold from our vassals)?

Mekkah is very hard to dislodge on first try because it's on a hill, and unless you have tanks, you often lose troops

Now is probably the time to switch to police state/nationhood to prevent another respawn (Rome/Greece) which would be much harder to control. I've even seen Russia respawn early even though they just died.

Trynthlas you're up.
