Apolyton vs Civfanatics

Ok, I know this is quite a divisive thread but I think I have a few valid points here.

Apolyton seems like a very elitist kind of place. I have a username at apolyton, but I have never posted there. Why? It seems to be dominated by a handful of opinionated, egotistical, narrow-minded people who spend all their time on the board flaming each other.

I need only name people like yin26, alexanders horse, solver, uberkrux and even the dreaded bob dornan (definition of a troll if ever I saw one) etc etc

All they ever do is criticise, ever seen one of these guys actually compliment something? I don't think I have...

In contrast civfanatics seems like a much more open community. The posters at civfanatics don't come across as being quite so opinionated in their views. The way they talk at poly you would think they knew everything about every subject and anyone who dares to question them gets flamed to death.

The strange thing is at poly, they think they know everything, whereas as CF people don't come across as knowing everything, but I have seen far more intelligent conversation made here than I have ever seen at apolyton.

I don't know if this is just me (or just being very misguided) but compare MarkG and Thunderfall. Markg posts very rarely, usually it is a reprimand and even when it isn't, his tone is such as to say "this is my site and don't you forget it"
Thunderfall on the other hand always sounds friendly, helpful (hell he even posted in my thread where I was asking for relationship advice)

Anyway, I came up with the idea of making this thread last night after I had smoked something, but the idea still sounds good this afternoon

I know i've made a lot of generalizations here but i'm just trying to sum up the atmosphere of the two sites

sw99 - This site bashing is really frowned upon here. I know for a fact that TF has asked people not to post these threads, in the interests of harmony.

I, personaly prefer CFC any day, but lets can it. This is TFs site, and we should respect his wishes.

I have never been to the Apolyton forums and already I have heard a lot of bad things about them like server always down, a lot of flaming etc. Is it really that bad?

I don't know, js...it might have been a bash, but it was a pretty polite, well-spoken one. It's not like he said "APOLYTON SUKS CFC RULZZZ!!!!!!" or some such thing. If there are Apolyton members who hang here who would like to argue against his criticism, then they should do so (in a polite manner). I think it could be beneficial to all involved, as long as it remains CIVilized

I've been there but not for a long time. I read some threads and looked up stuff, but like sw99 said, it wasn't really something Iwanted to join in on... I mean, I dunno, I DEFINITELY like this site much better. I went there a couple times, I think once I found CFC I never went back. There's Civ info here, but the threads and people are good here. Whether or not they are good there matters not to me. I don't need more sites to check out. This one meets enough of my needs/desires.

guaranteed someone who can get onto poly when the server si busy will come over here and see this thread. then he'll go back topoly and start complaining about CFC. it's happened before, it'll happen again.

I've spent plenty of time at both and they both have their goods and bads.

Labeling or pidgeon holing either is very in-appropriate because both have the same variety of posters.

however, in an admin faceoff, Thunderfall is MUCH cooler than Marky Mark.

Ultimately this should come down to personal preference. I assume that we are all posting here because we prefer the CFC ambience to that at poly, but that doesn't make the two sites enemies. I can accept that there may be a little rivalry with regard to getting news first on various issues (Civ 3 mostly though), and I think that both sites had representatives of Firaxis posting on them. I don't think that there is any kind of versus about this. We should welcome all Civ players whoever they may be and regardless of how they have posted elsewhere. If they prove themselves to be bellicose idiots then we can make judgements for ourselves, but labeling a whole site as somehow inferior is just ridiculous. Besides, have you ever noticed how the content of both sites is very similar? The same scenarios, mod packs and maps are available on both sites, with a few exceptions, and whenever anyone posts a new discovery about the game on one site, if it is important enough then it will make its way onto the other. It is the posters at poly we have to thank for the map of specials and huts, after all. There shouldn't need to be any versus between the two sites. Cooperation is much better and the whole net Civ community can benefit.

That is what I go there for, often its more fun than smashing some helpless AI. Competetion and simulated conflict are the center of my recreation. It is certainly not an environment for persons with less that ROBUST egos (I am almost invunerable in that department ). Different posters are adapted for different enviroments, some (like moi ) have enough range to thrive in several (but even for me, ACOL has worn very thin).

I don't have anything against Apolyton. It's been years since I've posted there, though I do get their newsletter. I just wish that people wouldn't keep bringing it up, this Poly vs CFC thing, because it is divisive. I don't know, but I'm sure they aren't bashing CFC over there. Again, I don't know, but if they are, well, two wrongs never make a right.

Personally, I've found my home here at CFC. As for Apolyton--live and let live.

We have been down this road many times, I post at both, and have no problem with Apolyton for the most part.

Your off about MarkG, he posts alot, and cares about his site (even if he is a first class pain in the ass with his anti-USA trolls! ), and is a good guy.

The two ARE different, we work to foster an atmosphere of conversation and friendlness, they love trolling and flaming.

The On Topics of both are similar.

Neither have I although I think people tend to exagerate the other site's problems. I know two other sites that are based on the same topic as each other although slightly different and they all think they are better than the other site...

I’ve always found Civilization to be enthralling, though I was never very good at playing, but was disappointed with the newly released Civilization III. I’ve seen it, though haven’t bought it; I don’t like the concept of “Culture”, those fleeting messages, no multiplayer and reputedly meager scenario editor (Firaxis balked at including scenarios).

All of this notwithstanding, I’ve lost interest in this forum because I’ve found that the site’s population had grown exponentially following my registration. I think that it has lost its allure…

I prefer CFC. Its much better than poly IMHO. We have alot of info and downloads. Apolyton has some downloads but they're not that good. Apolyton rely's alot on its hosted sites like Scenario League and CSC.
Plus our forum is better and we're friendlier.

Eeek, I didn't think i'd cause quite so much controversy Probably just me being a bit naive

I really didn't intend this to be a poly bashing thread, I was just trying to sum up the different atmospheres of the two forums. I don't hate apolyton, I read their threads almost as much as I read the threads at civfanatics.

Perhaps I should have spent more time explaining that i'm glad we don't get the likes of bob dornan here
