April 2021 Update - Patch Notes Discussion

I TOLD YOU NETHERLANDS AND SCOTLAND WON'T RECEIVE ANY MEANINGFUL CHANGE!!!!
Radio Oranje Doubled in usefulness, that's pretty meaningful. It's still not great, but it's significantly better.

I'm surprised (and saddened) that there are no changes to Egypt and Scotland (specifically). I'm a little underwhelmed at the change to Radio Oranje, though +2 culture for international trade routes is not actually terrible (+2 loyalty for domestic is still mostly useless).

I'm confused about buffs to Inca and Korea, who were already strong civs.

I'm a little sad about this part: "Fixed an issue where bonus resources would not be removed from a tile after a district is built on it." I actually thought that was a feature, not a bug.

I remain excited by changes to Khmer and Spain, and I also think the buffs to France and Scythia seem welcome. But overall I think I was hoping for a bit of a broader revision.

Edit: Also the cultural domination piece seems pretty cool. It addresses an issue I think a lot of us had raised, which is that tourism is otherwise utterly useless unless going for a cultural victory. Now that is no longer the case.

This is a pretty significant patch relatively speaking, but they definitely over hyped it. And I say that as someone who usually takes their hype with a grain of salt - i.e. NFP was about what I expected basically. They may have put a little too much stock in "we've readjusted the base strength of some of the units".

Adding additional impact to tourism through "cultural domination" is pretty cool though.

Netherlands

  • Radio Oranje: Domestic Trade Routes provide +2 Loyalty (was +1) per turn for the starting city. Trade Routes sent or receive from a foreign civilization grant +2 Culture (was +1) to the Netherlands.

So Netherlands is officially twice as good now! :crazyeye:
I guess it's still better than having no leader ability, looking at you Robert the Bruce.

They didn't overhype anything. You did.

Huge buff to Peaceful Domination Eleanor. 25% bonus to loyalty pressure on foreign cities you culturally dominate. One of the hardest things for her to do is not win by Culture before she takes the last couple capitals. This should help immensely.

Also, that Mayan builder addition is fantastic!

So there's a new pet commnand for scouts...

I'm pretty disappointed that we still didn't get the change to older scientists and engineers to be like the NFP great people, providing instant technologies if their Eurekas were already triggered, and that we still haven't gotten the great work thumbnails fixed for the NFP artists.

Korea

  • [Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm] Three Kingdoms: Mines now receive +1 Science for each adjacent Seowon district. Farms now receive +1 Food for each adjacent Seowon district.

I don't get why they boost Korea. Now that Rationalism needs +4 adjacency the flat +4 from Seowon is huge. A meaningful nerf would be make the flat bonus +3, so one has to build two mines to get +4.

The cultural domination bonuses are really interesting - extra gold for trade routes to them, extra loyalty, and faster spy missions! It doesn't seem big but it ties in loyalty a lot more with the rest of the game
