April 2021 Update - Patch Notes Discussion

I have started a game with Spain, restarted it because the map was not ok after meeting Vietnam. In the new restarted game, my music is mixed with Vietnam music.

Edit: Possible exploit, I have founded Madrid as my first city (in this restarted game) and have been given a free constructor. Only one continent at the moment.

Edit2: A drought appears but no dust clouds animation in the affected tiles.

Edit3: 2860 BC, Second city founded. I have noticed that my capital is producing 2 faith per turn instead of 1, I have god king chosen so I think the game apply the differnet continent modifier from last game... although in that game I didnt found a second city, idk...

Is the Malon Raider still a standalone unit? Is it the only one left, if so?

Wasn't it suggested before that the naval AI would be improved? From these patch notes, one can't really tell. Notes themselves suggest only peripheral AI related to naval stuff is dealt with, but the overall strategic and tactical AI is not necessarily touched at all. Stuff like detecting what kind of fleet the enemy has, what kind of ships does the AI need to build to counter it, and how the AI should use its ships in battle, tactically.

What is the bug exactly? Was going to fire up my first Portugal game today (Haven't played since Feb., was waiting for this big update before diving back in)

It’s a visual bug in the Trade Route menu. The Faith yield isn’t properly calculated like the rest of the yields. It still appears to actually provide the correct yield but it’s a visual annoyance.

Most of this feels like it should have been done when GS was released, especially the new units and the unit upgrade tree fixes. Right now it just feels underwhelming compared to what's been released in NFP, even the other free updates. The only things that really standout in a good way, that wasn't already revealed in the update video, is Samurai now being unlocked by Feudalism and U-Boats not needing Oil. It's nice to see the pre-GS unique units get better upgrade trees but Infantry needing Oil is still dumb. The Crouching Tiger not being a Crossbow replacement is still really, really dumb. Scotland and India not getting any changes is bizarre. The Netherlands change is pointless since Radio Oranje isn't a good ability. The changes to Sumeria and Scythia are probably pointless, especially the tourism on the Kurgan (seriously, why!?). Will have to play a game to see how the units work but I can't image it changing too much but I would like to be wrong about that.

Firaxis really shouldn't have put all of the good changes in the update video. I went from kind of curious about what would change to just completely underwhelmed and I probably won't pick up the game again for a long time after I give the Khmer a try and maybe the Ottomans to try out the new units. This is of course assuming the game is actual stable on consoles because it wouldn't be the NFP if the patches notes didn't include a bunch of stability and crash fixes for consoles.:crazyeye:

I'm still very confused. They really didn't consider nerfing Bull Moose Teddy at all? The one civ, more than any that needed it.

I probably got my expectations a little high that this was actually going to fix a lot of the balance issues in the game currently. They've made a pretty good start I guess, but it didn't really address many of the things I thought were needed.

"2/3rds of all civs are getting rebalanced" implies at least an explicit look/rebalance of that particular civ. Not them updating the base strength of some melee/anti-cav units which adjusts the UU strength by default.

Agree. I also don't consider a slight alteration to start bias a rebalance (e.g. Germany and Australia). Those aren't bad changes, but it does seem like hyping it that 2/3 of all civs will get rebalanced and then only making meaningful changes to about 10 civs is a bit disingenuous.

Samurais unlock at Feudalism. Nice!

Berserkers are only hit with the -5 CS penalty from melee units now. Nice!

Effective change to Isobongo but it wasn’t needed. No complaints though.

Radio Oranje doubled. This is fine with me.

Scotland ignored... my least favorite Civ remains my least favorite Civ.

There’s a lot here to unpack but these stood out to me the most that wasn’t covered in the previous videos. Overall, I think it’s a solid rebalancing and I’m excited to play more Civ.

So the Netherlands and Egypt are still terrible?

I've regularly seen Netherlands be ranked as B or even A tier, so I'm not sure where this comes from. Yes, Radio Oranje might be dull, but Grote Rivieren is an incredibly powerful bonus which consistently allows you to get +3, +4 or even +5 districts very early in the game. With this in mind, I think the adjustment to Radio Oranje is absolutely fine; any more, and people would start complaining that 'tEh dUtCh R oP"

As for Egypt, I personally find them kinda dull. But many people say its their favourite Civ in the game.

Honestly, there are a lot of 'fans' here who need to chill. You get yourselves worked up into a fit of expectation, then you become outraged when Firaxis inevitably fail to meet those expectations. This is a free update. Chill out.
