some leaders, like cardith lorda for example, have the adaptive trait, which means that every x turns ( x depending on the gamespeed of course ) you can change one of your traits for another one ) . it's incredibly useful if you use it well.

In my current game as Malakim (Varn Gosam, Adaptive), I switched from Financial to Arcane shortly after acquiring Knowledge of the Ether. After building 20+ Adepts with the Arcane promotion, I have to say it's been incredibly useful. All but 2-3 of them are Magi and Archmagi now. I'll probably go with Charismatic next (although Organized, Financial, and Spiritual are all attractive to me right now), but more for the +1 than for anything else. (Curse the Overcouncil and forced Liberty during my war of attrition! War weariness galore.)

Utilizing Arcane is definitely a strong choice for an Adaptive leader if you are prepared to make the most of it and can afford it.
