Are there any opensource turn-based strategy games of note?

Do you know of any free/community-based turn-based strategy games that are good? Eg freeciv could be one. Mostly looking for something in either the ancient or the medieval era, with reasonably heavy-strategy and not cartoony gfx. Preferably not full 3d either :)

The second one looks dodgy :o And a bit like ascii Dwarf fortress...

The first one looks like it is more rpg oriented than strategy (?). Essentially i am looking for a strategy game, eg Imperialism/old Civ typed games :)

KoDP is a game about managing a small kingdom, making hard decisions, managing your councillors and so on. It's turn-based and it's strategic, but it's not a god-type game, no.

Imperialism was such a cool concept. I wish they'd remake that one.

^Apparently Koei's (or tied to Koei) Genghis Khan 4 is sort of like Imperialism+EU1.

Only played GK2, which was a very cool game, although very outdated.

There's a Colonization clone called FreeMars. Playable, but slow and not that fun.

King of Dragon Pass is exactly turn-based strategy (an excellent one!), but through adventure/roleplaying-like texts/dialogues.

EXCLOM is a pretty amazing open source turn-based strategy game.
Yes, but as Baron Kyriakos says…

One would think the Baron is facing a scarcity of funds, as am I. I am also unsure as to whether His Little Lordship has access to the Windows operating system at present.

I don't recognize free as a legitimate requirement for software. If a $5 game is going to occupy you for 10 hours, just add 5% of that time as time spent working at roughly minimum wage to make that $5.
Oh, well, I was telling you in advance why His Little Lordship would have shot it down.

And Excel works great on macOS.
Well, I don't have a Mac, so I didn't know that. Huzzah, one lives and learns.

Battle for Wesnoth is actually pretty solid for a free game. Don't let the cheesy anime graphics fool you. I had fun with it for a few weeks.

One warning though, some of the late campaign battles are rough. You need to cultivate a pretty solid high level army over time or you'll have a tough run with the end game. Losses are permanent once you win a battle so you won't get any dead back for the next run.
