I guess it depends on when I finally get to buying a new computer, if I do it soon, I'd probably get Vista and then I'd probably not buy another one until the next windows came out.

Any computer you buy now already comes with a coupon for a free upgrade to Win7.
But yeah, for the vast majority of people, it's not worth buying new Windows for their computer, it's best to just get whatever is the latest version whenever they need to upgrade.

He was talking about upgrading not moving data over so this doesn't really solve the problem. You can move your data from XP to 7 just fine. If he doesn't want to do a clean install, then I wouldn't recommend switching platforms.

Win7 is Vista, the way Vista was intended to be.

The NT kernel version numbering does a decent job of representing the core amount of change between operating systems:
NT 5.0 Windows 2000
NT 5.1 Windows XP
NT 6.0 Windows Vista
NT 6.1 Windows 7

As I see it now, nope, I won't be getting Win7! Rather I plan to keep using XP until at least whenever Windows 8 comes out, and decide whether to upgrade or not based on Windows 8. Basically, the NT 6.x kernel doesn't play nice with my hardware/software combination, so both Vista and Win7 causes compatibility problems for me. Win7 isn't as bad as Vista, but XP works better than either for me, so why upgrade?
I actually could upgrade to either Vista or Win7 for free as an ACM/MSDNAA member, but would rather keep using XP than take a free upgrade.
Longer term... if Civ5 is really good I may switch to it more than Civ3, and that may well make NT 6.x more palatable - Civ3 is a very large part of why I don't use Vista now. Already I'm using the non-Civ software that didn't like Vista less, but none of the software that's replacing it dislikes XP 32-bit. So Civ5 could convince me NT 6.x doesn't have to be avoided like the plague (although I'd probably still want to keep a fast XP box for Civ3 for awhile). Alternatively, if NT 7.0 changes enough to be compatible with Civ3 (assuming Civ5 isn't great), I'd probably be willing to switch to that. But who knows when they'll finally end Windows 6.x?
Or I might quit being a CivFanatic some day, and that would make Vista/7 look better. But that would be a sad day indeed.
For now, I'll take the compatibility of XP over a free Windows 7, and be glad to know I'm using a system with less built-in DRM than Vista or 7 as well.

If compatibility with civ 3 is a big concern, then I dont see why you dont try out Vista or Windows 7. I have NEVER, even with Vista, had a problem with civ 2, 3 or 4. They all ran perfectly fine for me..
This premise makes no sense, there's nothing involving DRM that you can do in XP that you can't do in Win7.

It's the Protected Media Path and Protected User Mode Audio that I'm referring to. Alone they wouldn't be enough for me to not use Vista, but given the choice I'd rather not have them then have them. So it's a small benefit in the direction of XP over Windows 7.
I've tried out both Vista and Windows 7 - neither run Civilization III well for me. I don't know quite why - perhaps it's something with my hardware configuration - but they don't. I know other people who can run Civ3 on Vista, so it's certainly possible - it just doesn't work on my machine, so XP is the better choice for me.
How is it any benefit? What can XP do without that, that Vista/Win7 cannot do with it?
I might get it in the future, though I don't think I need it anytime soon (Vista is working fine for me). Plus that $100 could go to somewhere a little more useful in the near future (I'm running out of space on my machine, and I am looking into a new hard drive (the good 1 terabyte one's are around $100)).

Good 1TB's are about 70$ on sale before S&H. 1.5TB is about 100$
Specifically, Samsung Spinpoint F1 and F3.
Newegg regularly has deals on HDD's that brings them very low in the $/GB territory.

I will take the wait and see approach befre getting it. But right now XP is doing a mighty fin job as it is.

I currently use it and love it. The only reason I would not like to get it is because that costs money, but I'm fairly certain I'll pay for it when the free RC time ends. The alternative is to go back to an inferior Windows OS or a Linux OS which won't run all the games I would want it to run.
