Are you sticking with civ4?

I will try some civ4 mods I still haven't gotten around to.

I still haven't tried Rhye's mod, and a few of the other highly rated ones. In fact, it was only recently I tried playing mods.
 
I will buy it and try it out on release. I have to do this, I can't comprehend how some people could resist that :)

However, I only really started playing IV as late as last year, after clinging to III for much too long. It's still quite new to me, and I'm just barely starting to look at the mods. I imagine I'll play IV for a long time still.

Believe me, I'm so tempted to do just that. But buying a new computer for >500€ to get a 40€ game to work is madness so I refuse to do it. :)
 
I have the minimum specs, and most of the recommended. Quad core, hd space, 512mb Vid card.
I am just not interested in registering at this steam site, accepting their policies, just to be able to play a game I bought, for my personal PC use, which, I never plan to play online.
I need my PC, I don't need any possible hassles Steam might bring to my PC.
If a virus come from their site, will they replace my computer? of course not.

I also, don't like the 1uph retro chess like feel it will bring. Lack of Espionage and religions. Reduced number of leaders and slower build of combat units.
Someone mentioned No ICBM's either. They are taking Nukes out of the game.
Is it Civ anymore?

I could do with a reduction of units per hex. 5 would be agood number.
It just seems like it is going that simplistic Facebook way of PC games.
Like City of wonder.
Next, we will need 2 friends to upgrade. 5 to build wonders.

I've been looking around the web for some Civ 5 info, I've downloaded a few podcasts and I have to say I am more excited about it now than I was a few weeks ago. I agree with the absence of religion makes it somewhat unrealistic but I understand why they did it for diplo purposes. I'm disappointed Espionage isn't in it.

Really, in terms of gameplay, it doesn't bug me as much.

What really pissed me off was the technology aspect of it. I just bought a nice laptop a month ago. I paid like $1700 for it. I come to find out that I find myself in between Minimum and Recommended. I was aiming for recommended. Why the hell would the develper do this? I mean, to play Civ 5, you need to invest over $1000 for a new system. Kind of stupid if you ask me.

Then there is the whole Steam issue. I really don't know alot about it but I hope it's safe.

Anyways, my goal is to download the demo version and go from there.
 
I will definitely keep playing civ4 for a while, as I'm in several PBEM games.
But I will most probably eventually transition completely to civ5. The only thing that might keep me in civ4 bts is mods and MP (e.g. if civ5 mp is really bad, which it might be).

About to start an 18civ pitboss game which sounds like a lot of fun, and civ5 is simply not going to be capable of that sort of thing at release. It won't even have pitboss or pbem at release, and there's a real risk it never will.
 
I absolutely agree with TMIT about bugs/controlling not being patched properly. However i feel that compared with the overall complexity and gameplay its affect is not that big. I still enjoy this game alot and think its one of the bets TBS games out there. There are some other strategy games where there are so many bugs that it kills the joy of playing the game for me. Best example is Medieval 2. It received amazing ratings throughout several game magazines and i like the medieval era even more than the Rome TW scenario. The graphics are epic and it is so cool to watch these battles. But even after a 600 MB (!!!) patch the game pisses me off every time i play it:

-idiotic behavior of the campaign AI, you can lure enemy armies out of their safe castles
-charge of the knights do not work how they are supposed to be
-generally stupid movement of the units in the RTS battle making you feel that they they are not doing what you want them to do
-groups of 80 pikemen who change weapons to their swords when ONE is attacked in meele combat making effective pikemen walls (like in Rome TW) impossible
-battles on top of or around city walls are... well... weird things happen
-enemy armies which loose their siege weapons get slaughtered by your cannon towers doing nothing (results in hit 6xtime button and still wait 15 minutes til every enemy soldier is dead... WTH)
-when attacking castles/citadels with arrow tower and you have no siege weapons the "autobattle" option always gives WAY better results than you are able to achieve
-a lot of other stuff

Every some months i play this game again with the small hope "Ahhh come on epic battles are awesome... those bugs cant be that annoying" and then stop it after some hours.

Back to civ: Im planning to get 2 more gig of RAM (for civ5 as well as for sc2) and my pc should be fine. I will play civ5 for at least some weeks and then decide if its worth it. I generally dont have any problems with playing older games of a series (i enjoy homm3 more than 1,2,4,5, moo2 more than 3, Rome TW more than Medieval2/Napoleon and Anstoss 3 (a german football manager game) over at least 5 newer manager games). Overall i think i wont buy any other games for the next months... i guess until sc2 addon or diablo3 comes out.

Madness or not, I just did. :D

Awesome new i7 ASUS laptop with Radeon Mobility 5870 graphics and 6 Gigs. Love it and can't wait to put it through its paces. :king: I already see an amazing difference running Civ IV.

Good point. I played through two campaigns on M2TW and haven't touched it since. Though IMHO some of the frustrating mechanics were even worse than the bugs you mention - rebels hiding in your land without notification, agents that were invariably useless if not worse, generals always ending up as drunken louts...

Sure, Civ has dumb mechanics too, but at least some "features" (vassals, events, AP) can be disabled in the options.
 
Civ 5 is pretty exciting to me. I like what I see about war and battles not being a "Who can build a bigger SoD" game. I like that espionage is no longer part of the game. It looks pretty.

And really, after five years of one more turn with Civ 4, I'm ready for something else.
 
The Specs thing is a real issue for alot of people right now. The economy isn't doing well all over the world, and to up them again, for what reason? because, that is, what is for sale now?
Is there any justifable reason that the basic Civ engine can't run on a Pentium4 single core with an excellent video card and maybe 1 gig of RAM?
We (ok, some of us) could do without the video, if that is what drags down available resourses and requires us to keep expanding.
Probably, some deal with computer companies.
Stagnanting comp tech shouldn't be unreasonable considering the fast processors, huge RAM and HDs available.
 
Hopping to V immediately and can't wait. Everything about it looks and sounds great, especially gameplay changes/additions/removals.
 
I will stick with Civ IV. I will build a new computer eventually, but not now just to play one game. I am also not thrilled with the limitations imposed by a hex grid. My biggest complaint is the marketing strategy for this edition of Civ, Steam, bonus', etc. Maybe somewhere down the road I will pick up a cheap copy of Civ V, but for now I will stay with Civ IV BTS.
 
I've just started playing the Fall From Heaven 2 mod for Civ 4 and I recommend it to any player who wants a change and a really polished game experience. It feels like another game altogether. I remember trying it a while back, sure it requires some getting into but it's definitely worth the trouble.

Civ 5 will probably get a large number of mods in a few years but there is no reason not to take advantage of this feature with civ 4.
 
DLC, Steam... yea I am sticking with CIV4 until the day I die.
Or at least until they publish some sort of combined package in a few years that will include all the patches and any expansions in a single convenient non steam package.
 
What's wrong with complaining about something you have to use? Would you rather them complain about steam having never used it?
