Ares de Borg's Terrain Pack II: Preview Thread

I think whats causing this confusion is the fact that there are 2 (atleast) types of desert. The endless pure sand dunes like in Sahara, and the rocks, dirt, etc. like in Nevada.

Civ desert kinda represents the sand dunes, no? And Ares` plains look alot like the other type. Which leads to the conclusion that even tho they look amazing, they are really not plains. I used to think they were, couple of 100 posts ago, but now I`m not so sure.

I think that Civ desert tiles are supposed to represent both. In reality, for example, most of the Sahara is rocky rather than sand dunes (which are mostly confined to certain areas such as the Ubari Sand Sea or the Great Erg Oriental). Yet you would surely represent the Sahara in-game as just desert tiles, not mostly plain with a few bits of desert here and there. Rocky desert is just as useless, from a civ-building point of view, as sandy desert; but plains tiles in Civ are not useless at all.

There's several definitions of desert. One is any area where no-one lives (like a desert island), but the one that gets used most often today is an area that gets less than 250mm of precepitation (rain, snow, sleet etc.) in a year. IIRC the arctic and antarctic are classed as deserts too by that definition. The Civ terrain is clearly meant to represent sandy deserts.

BTW, best ever name for a desert comes from those crazy Australians - 'The Great Sandy Desert'. Call a spade a spade and all that...

Okay, but when is Ares going to post here again? :mischief:

Well he only posted three days ago, and that was to say it would be done in a week. So within about 4 days I guess (I hope).

Bloody oath! :D Although i guess it is a bit like calling the Pacific the "Big, Wet Ocean"

Apparently there is a Great Sandy Desert in Oregon, USA, too :hmm:

Oregon isn't actually real. Its a myth, perpetuated by the city of Portland.

Huh? Somebody at the door?

I'm still alive, don't worry. :D

By the way, I could need 5-10 beta testers who check the terrain before it's fully released. PM me - first come, first serve.

I would like to beta-test, but September 14 - October 4 will be a very busy time for me, but when do you plan to release it (end the testing)? Because if it is before September 14 I would like to help, though I might not be the most active tester.

Beta-testing for a terrain set? Sounds interesting...

Well, there might be glitches, and I want to iron them out before release. :D

Actually, and sorry for this guys, but I think it should be the more pcx experienced guys who should test it, not just anyone who applies. I`d love to get my hands on that terrain ASAP, but when all the guys were noticing things like some green stuff on the coast and such, I didn`t notice anything (and I still don`t ), so I think I wouldn`t be much of a tester.

I suppose I should take a look. I won't play with it for weeks and weeks, but just check some random maps. However, I have a real good eye for details, in other words, I'm a kick ass tester. :smug: (other stuff I've found hundreds of errors in include [c3c], the WH mod and LotM)

@LMR

That Too. Oregeon, Idaho, and Saskatchewan simply don't exist.

And Snakes on a Plane is the BEST MOVIE EVER MADE! Wasn't it great when the guy got his you-know-what bitten?

Okay, I'm done OTing too.

SNAKES ON A PLANE!

I agree. I remember several people spotting some minor glitches in Ares' last terrain, but i never saw any in the game. :crazyeye:

Agreed.

The terrain looks perfect for my greek scenario, IMO, too.

Some random shots on El Mency's...
