Arioch's Analyst Thread

Do you guys want someone to translate the French article? or at least pinpoint bits of new information?

Google Translate works wonderfully for me; the only thing I found was the number of citizens needed to start building settlers (see above). However, between my bad school French and Google's machine French, I'm sure we'd all be very grateful if you could take a look ...

On notera aussi qu'il faut désormais deux citoyens minimum pour commencer à produire des Pionniers capables de créer de nouvelles villes.

Pionniers is Settlers
Citoyens is Citizens is Population.

Is is not always the case of that they use the exact translation of a word to designate something. Like Warrior is "Guerrier" but they could called it something completely different like "Chasseur" which would translate back to "Hunter".

Basically it means that city needs a minimum population of 2 before constructing a settler. Reading the rest of the article..

A summary of the French article CanardPC

ALPHA preview

the Alpha preview was full of bugs. Numerous CtD. 90% of his save games freeze.
Average crash occurred every 2 to 3 hours. Record number of turns without crash 250.

INTERFACE
  • Overall the new interface is very good.
  • The mini-map is the clearest he ever seen.
  • When there is an event, like a city gained a population, an icon falls from top of screen.
  • the "Next Turn" icon becomes "Choose Production" if a city has nothing in its production queue. It becomes "Units Await Orders" if a unit hasn't been given a task. It becomes a "Choose Research" if there is no tech being chosen. So with that, it's hard to waste a turn without forgetting something to do.

EARLY GAME

  1. Granary has less importance than previous version of Civs, providing 2 food.
  2. City need minimum 2 population to begin constructing settler.
  3. Once you get Optics, which comes very fast, your Settler can cross water to build if your Civ is being blocked in by a rival.
  4. Even on normal difficulty, it seems the Barbarians are more aggressive than before. They will go for your Settlers and Workers. When capture they bring those civilians units back to their camp. So you can free them later by attacking the Barbarian camp. You can even free the workers and settlers from another Civ and they will become your omg BFF!!! ( exaggeration) on the diplomatic level.
  5. During these mini barbarians wars in the game, the archer is the best unit thanks to their range.

Something about City States.
They offered quest in exchange for their eternal love and alliance: Monaco will become your ally if you burn Rio to the ground.
EDIT: This offer applies to ALL Civilizations, first come, first serve.

WAR

  • The A.I. does fairly well in combat, using z.o.c. to do pincer movement and outmaneuver the player.
  • If the A.I. see a large amount of troops on the border, they will open a diplomatic channel, to ask you to stop playing Americans (this jab is added by me. :mischief:) , oops, I mean stop playing Gun Boat politics. Then they will start bringing their own troops to the border.
  • AI is very capable of calculating its chance of survival in a total war, and will not hesitate to sue for peace to save their capitals.

STEAKS and FISH.

basically the reviewer burnt a good amount of fish and steaks because he play "one more turn" and totally forgot about his cooking and what was on the stove! One his first day, during evening, he played 6 hours, the next day 11 hours.

This is some cool stuff, I like the humour in your commentary. I wonder if barbarians are capable of holding other non-combat units hostage like great people.

This I like to hear. I hated in CIV when your enemy would rather have their entire civilization destroyed then give up a tech or something, or even more ridiculous they refuse to even talk to you about the issue. In Civ Rev it was ludicrous, the AI would actually demand stuff from you in exchange for peace even if they were on the verge of being eliminated. However, an AI desperately wanting peace can lead to easy extortion of their resources, so their does have to be some limit for gameplay purposes.

CanardPC seems to have an old version. Check out the social policies screenshot. Cleopatra in Tradition, old greeks in Liberty, schoolchildren in Order and red petals in Autocracy. Those are the old ones, right?

Yes. Based on what they're saying, it's an old (at least 2 months old) version.

Or is it that the pics were taken at different eras in the game?
(I haven't personally kept track of the pics at all, BTW. Just throwing it out there)

Nah, the SP images are constant based on every other preview ever. The PC-canard images linked are from older builds, as is the review (hence the crashes).

Another question: Is city bombardment affected by the special abilities of the unit garrisoned? For instance, could Chokonus give 2 attacks to the city, or could Longbows grant an extra range?

I don't think so. But there is some reason to believe that a ranged unit garrisoned in a city can still use its own ranged attack. I have seen catapults and archers firing from cities in videos.

I am curious about that statement. Supposedly you can't raze city states so I wonder what he meant by that?

May be they'd be satisfied if you just capture Rio, rape their houses and burn their women. Or was it the other way around?

I don't think that's actually confirmed, though. We have the non-razing of capitals from a screenshot where razing wasn't offered as an option when a capital was conquered, but I'm pretty sure the non-razing of city states is only conjecture.

Please let it be so. I would accept this as a reasonable compromise on the razing issue. Sorry for going off topic but I figured since I started the razing argument I should give some ground wherever I can on the issue, even if it comes up in another thread. :)

That's my thought. Preserving civ capitals makes sense for gameplay reasons. Preserving City States has some gameplay reasons (encourages liberation, slight differences with diplomatic victory), but, overall, there are enough city-states that gameplay isn't dramatically affected (and the ability to raze them would be better).

This is the exact quote

Canard PC (Duck PC )

"On peut aussi répondre à leurs appels lorsque que, par exemple, Monaco promet l'amour diplomatique éternel à la première grande puissance qui rasera Rio de Janeiro, ou Bruxelles appelle à la destruction immédiate de Kuala Lumpur."

We can also respond to their (City-States') call of arms when, for example, Monaco promise eternal diplomatic love to the first Great Power (Civilizations players or A.I.) that will raze Rio De Janeiro, or, Brussels calls for the immediate destruction of Kuala Lumpur.

I think you can burn/razed/total destruction/erase a C-S off the map.. What else can it mean? Of course, if that C-S just happens to be a friendly to another Civ, or even in an alliance, one has to ponder about the consequences. The other possibility that I can think of, is that you annexed it immediately into your Civ. No puppets. Rio de Janeiro will cease to "exists" as a city-state, and will just be another "city" in your sprawling Nation.
