As a old player of CIV series for 15 years, I have to say CIV5 is the worst

Its become flooded because it takes about 3-4 games before the redundancy sets it. NOTHING CHANGES, nothing, every game is essentially the same as you squash the computers bumbling attempts to defend/attack, then research the same linear tech tree, and oh hey maybe you stop along the way to bribe a city state before you crush them and take their resources.

Your cities can be customized to a VERY limited degree and many of the buildings you would use to do this are simply built in all of them as... well theres really no reason not to? Ultimately your going to see more and more die hard Civ fans coming back with a curious sort of robbed look on their face.

This is Civ Rev with a new paintjob.

Here's a suggestion for you. :)

Instead of playing the same old war-rinse-repeat (which we all know works wonders because no game in history has had an efficient strategy war AI), why not try for one of the other victories?

Instead of expecting Firaxis to tell you sheep how to have fun, why not make your own fun in the game? :)

Yeah I noticed the bad AI already with just my second game on Prince level. I don't know how many times it has to be said but the game will be patched, this is isn't a console we're playing on. From my experience with Civ 4, which I couldn't even play for over a month after I picked up my preorder until they patched it, Civ 5 release is a dream. Civ 4 was not the "ultimate game" that some are claiming until YEARS after release.

As soon as the mod tools and world builder are released, the unhappy people will have want they want again.

very good point:goodjob:

I've been playing Civ since day one in 1991, and V is one of the better ones. I could never go back to playing the old ones now. I find it more engaging than IV, they got rid of many annoyances. In no way, for me, does it lack excitement...in fact, I find the diplomacy better, the battles better. It's just an outstanding game, and more than worthy of the Civ name. I honestly don't get the negativity on here.

Since 1996, I have played all CIV series and mod packs. As a big fan, I spent at least 1,000 hours in CIV.

But I have to say CIV 5 is the worst. The graphics turns better, the game concept becomes better, but it lacks the most important thing of previous CIV series: the excitement. The game runs smoothly, but I can not feel the excitement which I experienced in CIV2, CIV3 and CIV4. It seems that I play only for the purpose of the play. Nothing in this game gives me a WOW feeling.

Does anyone have the same feeling for this game?

Because people had more expectations regarding Civ 5. I'm glad it's working for you, but for many people it's not and they want to express it.

That's fine, there was a percentage of people who hated IV and III and II and the original civ too. What I can say, is no one loves the Civ series more than me, and I think V is fantastic. In no way is this "Civ Rev with a new paint job"...there's definitely a couple of things I miss from IV, but no deal breakers at all. There's way more pros than cons.

all CIV series and mod packs

The OP's point is not substantive, it's a personal opinion. I'm glad the OP has a personal opinion. I also have a personal opinion. :mischief:

That doesn't mean all mod packs.

Substantive and opinion are not mutually exclusive.

If it were a good game the fun would come naturally, a player would not have to somehow "make" it fun.

I wouldn't say it's the worst but it's certainly not the best. I just can't get over the snail pacing of the game's speed and unbalances.

I had a problem with the slowness at first, but I think it's ok now. In IV, by mid to late game I would sometimes have every building built in every city, which isn't very good. That doesn't require much strategy. There's no way you can do that in V though, you need to think much more about what you build...

There are things I don't like about this release. Things I do like. Problem is I've been used to playing civ iv rise of mankind, which is so awesome and perfect in every possible way I feel I'm probably being to judgmental on the vanilla version of civ 5.

First and foremost STEAM. I hate it, and despise it. I love the civ franchise, been a die hard player for years, and as such I ate it and bought the game, only the second time I bought a steam released game, I swore I never would again, I hate having steam on my computer, I don't want them pinging/modifying files on my computer constantly, I don't like turning off my IP blockers to play a damn game, I DON"T LIKE STEAM and I've seriously thought about taking the game back simply for no other reason that it's a steam release. It's intrusive, obstructive, and completely unnecessary as it's been hacked as easily as the rest of the DRM's out there. GIVE UP STEAM!!!! I pity the poor fools who don't have an internet connection, and can't even play a single player game.

Second, STEAM!

Third, the game has a look and feel like a console port, and it's bothering me. I love my PC games, I don't even have a console system due to the bad games from lack of proper resources to make the depth, and immersion possible that the PC has in spades. I like my games to feel like 'adult' games with the depth, maturity, and openness that the PC provides.

I still haven't decided on the revamped combat system. I do like having to race for strategic chock points, the ingrained ranged bombardment, how you really have to focus on the units you have, and they almost mean something, but there's just something about amassing 100 divisions to blitzkrieg the world that I miss. Perhaps this will grow on me more.

I'm not sure about the new implementation of the civics system either. But it's to early to say if it's better or worse than the civics of civ iv, first impression though is that it's not.

Also taking out religion was the second worst move. Why, just why? Oh well, another strategic layer of the game wiped out and for what reason? Political correctness? It's bad enough what PC has done to my country, now it's effecting my damn video games, get a freaking grip people.

Bottom line though this franchise rules the world for it's modability, and firaxis has really made good gains in this area, how they've opened the modding community up to the general public I love, and respect. It's almost enough to get past steam, but it's not. I hate steam and am pissed I had to re-install it to play my favorite game ever, it's not effective DRM, stop making me put software I don't want on my computer to play a game I paid good money, especially in this economy, for.

I never really played the vanilla versions of the games anyway, so any reservations I have about the new features I'm sure it can be set back, or made better. I like the formations mod implemented, ranged bombardment, the hex tiles, city states I'm still not sure about, WHERE IS RELIGION, btw???

Basically I'll hold back judgment on the overall game itself, to see what the community can do to fix what was broken, and improve what was improved, while complaining about steam all the way.

Who doesn't have an internet connection in this day and age? If these poor fools exist then maybe they should think about joining the modern age. If you're complaining about having to always have an internet connection to play, well, you would be the fool then now wouldn't you, considering that isn't true.

I keep hearing this and I have no idea what you're talking about. How in the world does this feel like a console port. There is no game like this on any console, nor could there be. What exactly makes it feel like a console? How is V less "adult" than IV?

Also played every incarnation and this is easily the best. CIV4 is fun but just a rush to spam the most units or buildings and requires very little strategic thought. Most choices the player has to make a no-brainers and there are so many decisions to be made that individual choices become almost irrelevant.

That doesn't mean all mod packs.

All apples and oranges
All blacks and whites
All civ series and mod packs

It means all mod packs.

Substantive and opinion are not mutually exclusive.

But it's still just one personal opinion.

If it were a good game the fun would come naturally, a player would not have to somehow "make" it fun.

How would you know it's not fun naturally if you only try one exploitive method instead of the many other paths through Civ?

They exist, obviously I'm not referring to myself, but can you imagine being a die hard civ fan, and living in an area with no interwebz, or maybe times are tough and the internet was a sacrifice you had to make to eat? I know I don't need it on at all times, but I do not want software on my computer that I don't want, and making me install it and open up my system to them is just plan wrong. If that makes me a fool, then here I have a file for you to download, that'll give me access to your system, you don't mind right?

I don't know, it's a personal observation, the cartoonish icons and graphics, the giant interface. It just has the look and feel of a console port.

I seem to be in the same age group as Dickens, but can't say I agree. There are obvious problems with the game, both from the AI and the programming. However, the reviewers have been pointing out that they had a different build that was better, and we also have first patches out that start to address the technical problems.

Civ V is simply groundbreaking in various aspects. The switch to a hex grid, 1upt and new combat system was overdue. I'm getting to like Strategic View more and more (2k Greg was on to something there). And so on.

To be fair, it took me a few games to get the "wow feeling" because things were too different and the lower difficulty levels are simply too easy. It took a bunch of "practice games" with tiny/quick to figure out the new mechanics, especially how to balance happiness and gold -- and I'm a huge/epic kind of guy. But at some point it hit me, and now I'm back to getting too little sleep.

Hang in there. Rapture is coming.

My version of V doesn't have cartoonish graphics or a 'giant' interface. What's a giant interface anyway? I think the menus and icons look great, much better than IV.

I will say I'm thrilled to see Dale, the Lopez, and Afforess on the scene already. Work your magic fella's, work your magic.
