ask a transman anything

Wow! Thank you so much for sharing your story Mark. It's amazing and you are very courageous.
This is definately one of the best threads I have read in a while. :goodjob:

This is a topic that greatly interests me. Hearing from you and reading all the questions and answers that have been posted has been fantastic. I'm looking to research and contact transmen in my country and expand my own horizons in doing so, and hopefully other peoples as well.

I'm going to try and find your book in my country and read it. You are an amazing individual Mark. I wish you the very best on your journey. :)

Thank you for taking your time to listen and care.

So are the hormone injections permenent? Or do you have to keep taking them.

If you do have to keep taking them, would you turn back into your original sex by not taking them?

once the secondary characteristics are set in, they are there for life. I do have to take hormones for quite a while though. I am only 42 years old and since I had my ovaries removed, my body does not produce any hormones on its own. Therefore, for my health, bone density and stamina, I need to continue with my shots weekly. For atleast another 30 years.

I wont ever turn back to being a female, even if I stoped the hormone shots today.

Xanikk, She never had the operation! She still has male genitals, and I think she's happy just as she is.

Mark, I also thing what you're doing is great. I imagine a lot of transgender people would be so relieved to finally be themselves, that they'd hide their origins and just dissapear into society. Its great you're promoting acceptance. You're kinda preaching to the choir in my case though. I became very accepting of transexuals after I fancied the pants of Nadia Almada from Big Brother in the UK. :D Despite her origins, she's aaaallllllllll woman!!! :D (and she won the series as well!)

My facial features have also changed, my taste in food, likes and dislikes all have changed. It shapes your person, your mentality and your emotions.

Mark Angelo

So your saying that not only your physical body changed? But your likes and dislikes?

So what if you were not gay but had a sex change operation? Would that make you gay?

That is almost unbeilevable!

So just taking a couple shots turns your whole physique and not only that your mind into that of the other sex?

The degree of comfort varies from individual to individual. It all depends where a person falls in that gender/sex continuum or spectrum. How far away from the typical development, would depend on the dysphoria. Hence gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder. Some transsexuals are fine with just the hormones, and getting the top done. Others require the whole enchilada.

I agree She does look good.

Well, Kinda. It says in her wiki article that miriam was taking hormones from the age of 11, so that would have put a stop to her male puberty Like mark said, so that's gonna help her a lot. She had breast implants, but the hormones do a hell of a lot as well. If she stopped her puberty, then her shoulders and jaw wouldn't have broadened, her voice wouldn't have dropped, and she wouldn't have got all the body hair that guys are meant to get at that time. It pretty much is like majik.

As far as Nadia Alamada, she started her transition a lot later. Theres photos of her about when she was a man with a beard. Her jaw and shoulders are quite broad, and she's arguably more masculine looking than Miriam but then really... when her feminine features are so prominant, who's looking at her shoulders:mischief:

Funny you should ask, there are many transmen that were very much attracted to females prior to surgery and hormones, they could even stand the site of men. Yet, once they changed the sex, they became attracted to men. Go figure. Its something to do with the receptors and hormones. Most become bisexual. I dont know. Its bizarre, but human.

Well, not just a couple of shots, we are talking years of hormonal therapy. Your mind which is your gender center has always been identified as male, in my case. However your physical components start to match with what your brain feels. The hormone then elicits more changes in the brain, finally connecting with the messengers from the hormonal use. It is pretty amazing stuff.

Do you have a high-pitched voice or has your voice gotten deeper?

(I hear some transsexuals's voice doesent change, even with hormones)

my voice is very deep. Testosterone deepens your voice. I sound just like any other guy.

Just to complete the answer, my understanding is that for transwomen, in most cases their voice does not change and this can only be done by training their voice to be a higher pitch (some info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_therapy_(trans) ).

That is correct. once the person has developed after puberty their voice has deepened, and its rather difficult to change. However, many transsexual females do go to voice coaches to help feminize their sound. Some transmens voices do not deepen fully, its an individual thing. As is with genetic males and females. Have you noticed some genetically born females have deep voices, while some men have high pitch voices. Its all about hormonal receptors.....

Welcome again.

How do you feel about fundementalilists, they would judge you in a heartbeat? I know we don't have those sorts of fundementalists here, but they would tell you that you had by changing your sex been wrong, and that only God has the right. If such unusual Christians approached you how would you deal with them?

Science is on your side now, in my country they'll give you the op for free, and all the horomones too, but how much hardship did you have to go through before science actually got on board, I ask because I have a condition that went unmet for 16 years, because science hadn't caught up and I feel I was let down by something I really believe in. Do you feel that sometimes you got short shrift because you had nothing in the way of science? And has it made you slightly annoyed by medical practice?

I have slight recentments towards the fundemantalists. But I forgive them for they know no better. They have been brain washed. They truly believe in a book that was written many years ago, and does not fit in todays world.
They are angry, and need to be angry about something. Its their nature and make up. I have clients who are born again, and I have been able to change the way they think and feel about transsexuals. That makes me feel good. I think once they know a person, first hand they have a different approach and frame of mind. I think that they are selfish to think the whole world revolves on their believes, and they are not giving God enough credit and power, to let him speak to people hearts, instead of badgering them as they do. God knows all, and if he really wanted to create a change he would have by now. This is his master plan. Exactly how things are, only he knows why, we are not here to question that, but to live it. He is testing every single one of us, and reads our minds and feelings.

They can judge me all they want, it matter none to me. They are not my maker, therefore their judging cannot hurt me. They are hurting themselves. They are only showing their true nature and color, and how hypocritical they really are.

As far as science is concern. We have always existed transsexuals, from the very begining of time. What science has done, is given a reason for our existance and helped us align our selves. I do wish, the information would have been around earlier, so I could have been saved the heart ache, and have recieved more acceptance and love from my family. But, cant cry over spilled milk. Se la Vid. Life goes on, I must make the best of it now.

Getting annoyed wont solve anything for me. I am however doing something to help others, so they dont have to go through what I went through.

Are you okay now? After 16 years. I hope so. It is so important to heal. For every person that heals in the world, the world gets closer to healing as a planet and us as a species.

Oh, if you really want to know how I feel about the fundamentalist. Go to my signature and click on the you tube link. I wrote a poem just for them, and I perform it on you tube. I like to get music put on it and make it into a video rap. The poem is in the back of my self published book.

Looking at your nowadays pictures, it really feels like magic. Its amazing what can science do today. Really it is. I actully couldn't tell you were once a woman.

I'm glad and happy that you could have done it. But is everyone equal with such surgery/hormones treatment. Has there been any people for wich it didn't work, or just won't work?

Also, one more thing, not sure if you'll get offended, probably not. You were a very cute girl, top right corner picture. If thats not a cute girl i don't know what it is. Anyway, thats the past i guess. I'm asking this because, i'm sure you had boys asking you out. How did it worked out? Sorry if you awnswered the question already in the thread.

Yes I've got alot of strength out of my depression and I feel I'm somewhat more robust for it even though it was nothing to do with psychology but season, ie it was physiological not mental, so I feel that I'm in a good place, for me as you, there is no use crying over spilt milk.

I got the short end of the stick but eventually science caught up. I lost alot out of the deal, but I wont whine about history. Get busy living I guess. 16 years are but short ones, but the rest of my life is long enough.:)

I'll take a look. :)

Hi Mark, best of luck for your mission. Reading through the thread, you certainly seem to be the right man for the task.

Here's a strange question from a strange guy: While I noticed that transphobia is receding (at least here in my country), I also see a strange new transphilia phenomenon. I don't really know how to describe it ... it's as if transsexuality has become, well, fashionable in some groups of society. One clear indication is the adult area of a movie store ... the amount of transsexuality movies has exploded from barely anything to a full aisle. I also know at least one person who made it his mission to at least once have sex with a transman and transwoman. To me, it sounded a bit like "trophy hunting", as if he wanted to complete a collection.

Question: Do you think there's a danger in this development (if you see it too), an objectification of transsexual people? It's certainly more positive than hatemongering, but still irks me ...

Then again, perhaps I just know some very strange people (which I probably do ;) ). Still, I'm interested in your thoughts on the subject.

Thanks for both compliments. Not everyone is as fortunate as I have been. Some people are not so happy with their results. Its a person to person basis.

I did have lots of boys asking me out on dates, I just wanted to be friends. I feel more comfortable around men now. I guess, I don't feel threatend anymore. Plus, I am happy with me.
