Yep! Astro best tech you can get from a hut.

I see you're using the Attacko research methods.

What is "attacko research methods"?:)

Attacko posts really good "strategies" in the strategy articles forum that are often hilariously bad, like suggesting to only build explorers to pop as many huts as you can to ensure that you get all the techs you need without building any infrastructure. Then he defends them as other players post proclaiming the absurdity of the strategies. It's pretty funny.

You can see one of his threads here. Mind, it's not altogether serious.

Well when you think reasonably about it, popping techs from huts offers the best hammers-to-beakers conversion rate you're going to get. Figure an explorer costs 40 hammers; in a heroic-epic city with a forge you'll get +125% on that, so it's effectively under 18 hammers. In turn, a typical explorer probably pops a hut every 15 turns, and maybe 1/4 huts give a tech. About 800 beakers per tech, so it's worth 13.3 beakers per turn. Considering that you could build 4 explorers for the cost of one library, it's clear that the opportunity-cost of building a library is 53.2 beakers per turn, so you'd need over 200 base commerce in the city for the library to be worthwhile in comparison.

I think the numbers speak for themselves; it's clear that spamming explorers is a more effective research strategy. Of course, this doesn't consider the true pro play, which is spamming the cheaper scouts.

Scouts are the superior.

Woops, my days of Civ2 are coming back to hinder me. Did I really say Explorers? Maybe the lowercase E indicates that I didn't mean a specific unit, but rather a class of units.

But yes, the goal of any early game is purely to beeline to the Heroic Epic in an effort to make a city that will crank out Scouts who will, invariably, pop huts and not die to Barbarians or fail to pop techs from huts. After all, what's the point of having a save game system if you don't use it?

I've been relying this for 4 years now, since Warlords :) It has happened about 4 times in all my games since, and is always a major coup.

When I go for the circumnavigation bonus I'll send 2 caravels out in opposite directions (just about everyone does that). But my little secret is I try to send an explorer on each caravel and any huts they spot on desert islands as they sail around are a potential hut pop of Astronomy, a huge bonus. In fact I don't start researching Astronomy (or trade for it) while there is still a good chance of a hut pop.

The other advantage to taking explorers is that about 30% of the time it is the explorer (running across another landmass) that actually gets the circumnavigation bonus when he crosses the imaginary line and meets the caravel coming the other way

Attacko's amphious assault elephant strategy was the best :)

Or use Spies. By the time you get Optics, the barbarians often have units defending their huts. Explorers and Scouts can't attack units, but a Spy can creep into the huts and pop Astronomy withour retaliation.

Is it just me or do spies always seem to pop barbs from huts though?

just popped astro with a spy yesterday (First time for me. Quite a surprise, so I missed the screenshot). Spies cannot get experience from huts I reckon, so that cancels the risk of enemy barbs somewhat. + those barbs cannot actually hurt spies, hehe...

Attacko doesn't post here except through his spiritual guide troytheface.

are attacko's posts attempts at humor? I can never tell.

Thanks, you gave me a chuckle. Answer: yes, he and Troy the Face post crazy strategies and then defend them. Whenever you see "is the superior" that's attacko's style.

OP: As mentioned above, Astro is by far the best tech you can get. On panagea, all the huts get popped early. On terra or Earth maps, there are often unpopped huts that may have astronomy. I always put an Explorer or Scout in my caravel when he's circumnavagating. You never can tell. When the huts are guarded, use a spy.
