We are not celebrating a day when French people killed other French people, we are celebrating the day when the idea of a French people (and not a mixture of Bretons, Auvergnat, and others) was born.

This "Not-Bastille day" thing is fairly interesting. Was 14/7/1790 really the day when the French national identity emerged from the group of marauding tribes and drunk farmers that were prevalent at the time?

(That question was actually half serious - how did the French national identity emerge at that date, as opposed to other significant dates at that time?)

Well, there wasn't really a specific day, when all the drunk farmers of France said "hey, today we are French".
However, the 14/7/1790, there was representant from every provinces of France, the king was there, the nobles, the people, and the church...

So it was a kind of general reconciliation of the 3 estates, and the feast of all French, hence it was used as a symbol of the unity of the French people whent the national day was decided in 1880.
