Avatar: Legend of Korra

I thought it was coming out this Autumn :(

No, it got pushed back to 2012, hopefully it'll come out in 1st Quarter 2012. :(

Something omitted from the in-thread update:

Korra, we kind of describe her as a fiery waterbender. She’s very pugnacious. Kind of in your face. We wanted to create a new Avatar that was completely the opposite of Aang. So, whereas Aang was the peaceful, nomadic Airbender guy, she’s very tough, very headstrong, not scared to get into a fight, and kind of picks fights with people too sometimes. So she’s definitely totally the opposite of Aang so it has been kind of fun to write her character and put her in situations that Aang never would have gotten into.

So excited.

Yep. Hence the quote in my sig, from Brown Johnson at Nickelodeon: "hotheaded, independent, and ready to take on the world".

The car and motorcycles thing could work. As long as it doesn't ruin the concept of bending.

The focus of the show will be Korra's interactions with an anti-bending rebel group. I think we'll see bending deconstructed quite a bit.

Why do you guys get so fired up about this? What makes it awesome?

I know next to nothing about Avatar (this show or the Last Airbender thing), and I'm curious. Enlighten me. Show me what I've been missing. :D

I like it because it's an extremely imaginative television show with very high quality animation (especially for a kids show), often adult-like themes, and excellent character development.

It wonderfully mixes humor and seriousness seamlessly. It's a show marketed for 8-12 year olds that has found great success (and probably does much better) well outside of that age range.

If you have netflix, I encourage you to watch the show and see for yourself (the whole thing is on watch instantly). It is an awesome show.

It's funny and childish while at the same time dealing with some deep and serious themes. The bending part adds a new, super-human dimension to it that I think is kinda interesting.

Edit: Yay partial x-post with Owen<3

In regards to character development: That's what I love about the character Zuko.

I like watching the development in Aang. At the very start of the series he looks very bad and generally not very confident in a fight. This makes sense as Aang is well versed in the theory and fundamentals of airbending (after 12 years of mastering it), but has little no experience in an actual combat situation (certainly against a firebender). In the first episode when he fights Zuko he is clearly panicking, everything he does is reflexive. It's much the same in his fight with Jet, who has a unique fighting style that Aang hasn't had to deal with, and has an uncommon amount of battle experience greater than anything he had face previously. However, by halfway through the first season you can tell he's getting much more comfortable fighting, when he fights Zuko (for example in Bato of the Water Tribe) or when he fights the firebenders in The Blue Spirit, now he's completely in control dictating - the movements of his adversaries and thinking and planning his moves ahead.

If you pay a little more attention to the set’s colors while viewing the show, then you will come to know that all the installments have white backgrounds. Isn’t that strange? But then truth is always stranger than fiction!

What.

Personally, I mostly enjoy the spirit realm of the Avatar world. Japanese-style spirits are very interesting - the whole crazy logical system they utilize, their lack of alignment etc.

The city is called United Republic and it was founded by Aang and Zuko.

The two guys in the poster with Korra are Mako (firebender) and Bolin (earthbender), and they are brothers.

The polar bear dog is female and her name is Naga.

Bolin has a pet fire ferret named Paboo.

There will be new flying bison and new lemurs.

There will be two seasons -- season 1 will have 12 episodes, season 2 will have 14 episodes.

Aang and Katara had three kids, Tenzin being the youngest and only airbender.

Tenzin has three kids of his own.

Anti-benders use chi-blocking.

There are metalbending cops.

Toph traveled the world to teach metalbending after the war was over, and her daughter Bei Fong is the chief of police.

There will be mixed martial arts in the series, and the music was described as 1920s jazz invented by the Chinese.

All the bolded things could turn out to be totally stupid in the Avatar universe. :[

I'm always impressed by the quality of these series. What smooth movements and beautiful drawings. I hope it's not secluded to the trailers.
