Some leaders have odd recommended civs in the base game, especially in antiquity. The big one for me is José Rizal, from SEA, being pushed towards the Mississippians and the Maya, or Isabella being suggested Egypt, across the Mediterranean, but not Rome, which actually ruled her region. Another weird trend is that about half the cast is pushed towards Rome, but only Confucius is biased towards China.

So, I made a mod to fix it! Baijen's Better Civ Biases changes the suggested civs for a few leaders—these are both those highlighted in game setup and those the AI is weighted to choose. In short, I added better regional matches to a few leaders (based on their home country) and removed a few nonsensical ones.

The full list of changes in v1.0:

José Rizal:
  • Removed biases for the Mississippians and Maya.
  • Antiquity: Added Khmer and Han
  • Exploration: Added Spain and Ming.
  • Modern: Added Qing.
Himiko:
  • Removed bias for the Mississipians.
  • Antiquity: Added Han and Maurya.
  • Exploration: Added Ming.
  • Modern: Added Qing.
Isabella:
  • Removed bias for Egypt.
  • Antiquity: Added Maya and Rome.
  • Exploration: Added Inca.
Benjamin Franklin:
  • Antiquity: Added Mississippian.
  • Exploration: Added Shawnee.
Harriet Tubman:
  • Antiquity: Added Mississippian.
  • Exploration: Added Shawnee.
This is my first mod, so please let me know if you encounter any issues. I’m also open to suggestions about additional changes to the civ biases or tooltips.

Here's a list of suggestions

Amina -Mexico (just why)

Ashoka -Hawaii +Majapahit (majapahit is from the same region and more closely tied to Ashoka's India

Augustus +Greece +Normans +Russia -Abbasids +British (Augustus ruled Greece. Russia and Normans were inspired by Rome. England made a large empire similar to Rome and England was inspired by Rome)

Benjamin +Inca +Maya +Hawaii +Mexico -Spain (Hawaii became an American state. Benjamin is from the Americas so if Harriet Maya, Inca and Mexico then he should have them too. Benjamin's America was ruled by Britain)

Friedrich -Egypt +Greece (Friedrich is from the same continent as Greece)

Harriet +Maya +Mexico (Harriet is from America she's got Inca so why not Maya and Mexico)

Buttuta +egypt +han +khmer +maurya +chola +majapahit +ming +qing +Siam (Makes him a true wild card based on where he travelled)

Machiavelli +Prussia (Neighbors Machiavelli's Italy)

Napoleon +Egypt -Persia (Napoleon had his campaigned in Egypt during his years as a revolutionary general}

Tecumseh +Maya +Inca (Same reason Harriet and Ben have them and same reason Pachacuti has Mississippi and Shawnee)

Xerses +Chola (because he gets Indian civs in other ages)

Trung +Han (Her people were ruled by the Han before and after her fight for independence)

Lovelace -Abbasids +Spain (Spain is from the same continent as lovelace

Ps. thanks for a great mod! can't wait to see what else you do with it. I'll try to keep this updated as future dlc comes

Thank you for the suggestions! I plan to release a new version after the update on Tuesday that will include quite a few of these.

Baijen updated Baijen's Better Civ Biases with a new update entry:

This one gives me errors for Himiko_Alt and I'm unable to start a game. If I comment out all references to Himiko_Alt it works.

Interesting, thank you for the report. I just was able to start a game as both versions of Himiko and am not seeing the error on my end. Did the previous versions work for you, and do you have the extra Himiko DLC?

I don't have founders content. It's occured for every version of Better Civ Biases.

Got it, thanks for letting me know. I’ll see about automatically accommodating for those who don’t have the extra content in the next update.
