BananaNES1: Zhanguo Shidai - The Warring States

blackheart - Yep. You got it. :D

Tyrion (and others) - Just stories which will flavour things up (and probably give you bonuses). It's not a real turn per se since you can't spend your money and stuff. Pre-update starting, should be up in 5 hours - max.

I'll take Qu

Qu
Leader/Player: King Dao
Capital: Ying
Other Cities: Shoujun, Cai, Chen, Fangcheng, Wan, Nancheng
Philosophy: Confucianism
Economy: Shattered (0/14/5)
Education: Literate (0/5)

Projects:
Completed Projects:
Notes: At one stage of the Spring and Autumn Period, Qu state was the strongest hegemon in the region. Several years before, the Duke of Qu declared himself King, going totally against accepted protocol that the Zhou was the overlord of the Middle Kingdom. This action earned the vilification of other Chinese people, who began regarding Qu as less than human

I'll do story after the update.. so want to know what I've gotten myself into ;)

LoL
No problem.

BTW
Warman and Panda, I'm not sure if it's fair to have two players at once, since every player has their skills in some fields and weaknesses in others. Having two players may get rid of that 'fun factor' in NESing. Sure either one of you don't want to take Qi? That's the last major state left.
Or Song and Zhongshan if you're feeling itchy....

To mod
From Yue

I rule the land that encompasses modern day Shanghai correct?

But isn't Qu the big landlocked red blob? Since Yue conquered Wu which was based at the mouth of the Yangtze river..

OOC a good movie for this time period (a little bit before actually) is Hero starring Jet Li.

Where do I rule exactly? Theres a blue state, then some ugly darkish color below it.

Typo.
I meant Wu... Haha.. Sorry, was typing the pre-turn update so I may type the wrong things in.
So yeah, it's Wu.

blackheart, then you'll recognise Zhao as the place where the guys were writing calligraphy.. ;)
Hero occurred quite a well bit into the Warring States period, sometime in the 300s or 200s BCE, when everyone was scared of Qin.

BTW, Zhao is that blue state in the Northwest. the tiny pink thing to your east is Zhongshan and the ugly blob south of you is Wei.

I heard somewhere that it is rumored that the Qin ruler who finally unified all of China wasn't the biological son of the Qin ruling line. His wife (or concubine, whichever one) had an affair with the prime minister (I think that's who it was).

I heard that too, and watched a show on that too.

bannana, you mean Yue rite?

Pre-Update
403 BCE – 24th year of Emperor Zhou Weiliwang
Year of the Wood Tiger

Zhou Weiliwang looked at his hands. The same hands that had thrown the symbolic stick and sealed his orders. Wei Si, Zhao Ji and Han Qian were now Dukes of their states. Yet another sign that his empire was falling apart, and it had been since the start of the Chunqiu – The Spring and Autumn. After ruling the Zhou kingdom for twenty-four years, he would have expected to be able to regain some of the glory of the dynasty. Instead, all he had been doing was ascend the steps to the Temple of Heaven every year. For what purpose? He prayed for a good year ahead, but who would benefit in the end? The dukes, and all they gave was a nominal tribute with which to maintain Luoyang. A curse left his lips that the eunuchs around him could not catch.

The Dukes around him were itching for land, and overstepping his authority. The Three Jins were busy with their own problems right now, Qin had been busy expanding their power base, the other states generally at each other’s throats and the evil Qu devils thought that they were the ruling dynasty. Blasphemers. Shu Ba and Yue wanted a piece of the great Middle Kingdom and while it was good that they wanted to assimilate with the glorious Chinese culture, the emperor was not sure if the other states will take their growth kindly.

Lu was busy showing off their intellect but perhaps that was a mistake. Even now, the states are poised to tempt Lu scholars to work with them instead of Lu and only time will tell how this would work.

Nonetheless, the last year had been relatively peaceful and it could portend to a good future for his reign. Never had he experienced such a lapse of fighting, such relaxation, and he hoped that… The clatter of steps told him a courtier was running, very quickly. What the hell does he want?
“Your Majesty, you must see this!”

The next five minutes were a blur. The courtier’s panicked expression was about the only thing Zhou Weiliwang remembered as he ran, following the courtier to the bell-room. In it, the nine bronze bells of sovereignty were held – the symbol of Zhou power over the Middle Kingdom. As the emperor neared the room, he could hear the deep resonance of the bell. No one could have hit the bell and left such a lasting sound, it could only mean that chaos was imminent.

Zhou Weiliwang sighed. He had been too quick to assume that his kingdom will be at peace. The vibrating bells only meant one thing – the lull has ended.

Zhanguo Shidai has begun.

OOC Notes

Back during this time, citizens of states can be found working for other states so that means if you don’t give your generals and people what they like, they may just leave you and serve another state. For example, Mo Zi served Lu although he was from Song.

This is the normal phase now. Please pop in orders by Wednesday, US Time.

Let the games begin. :D

Alex - I meant Wu, your (Yue's) capital city. ;)

NPC Diplo

from Das' polar bears
to all of China

We are the polar bears. Resistance is futile. You shall be polar-commandoed. Please put this on your sig to show that you've been polar-commandoed.

From Lu
To Polar Bears:

We accept you as our rightful god oh mighty Polar Bears please spare us and allow us to serve you in the future.

((Hehe.))

OOC: How do i tell what my people want? Will they tell me? I dont want any of my extremly smart people wandering off.

OOC: Lots of guesswork usually. You can try asking your advisors, make tours around your state. Thing is, with some exceptions, if the people see you as a Virtuous and Benevelont ruler, then they will flock to you. Confucian and Mohist philosophy.. ;) But a general indicator would be the Confidence stat. :D

After several IM chats with some players, I've decided to allow an 'advisor' situation. If you're short of stories and need a few NPCs to get advise, or just to play out a role, I'll be on MSN very often.
Get me at leezhaopeng AT hotmail.com

In many situations, I will try to be as unbiased as possible, giving both good and bad advice from many different characters. I have a list of names (not to mention my friends') which I can use so feel free to shoot. :)

Ok orders i will give tommorow.

24 hours to Normal Phase update.

I have a grand total of ONE order. I'm sure you guys can do better than that....
Remember, I need time to cough out tactical maps for your battle phase.. :D

Also, another feature I'm gonna add either this turn or next would be Advisors.
I as the mod will NPC three of your main advisors, each of them will have their own personality traits, some of which may be obvious, some not so. States can probably try to bribe other advisors, etc. as well.
You can also send these advisors with your army to help fight out your battles so at least you can predict how they will make their tactical decisions during the battle phase (as opposed to some generic commander doing it).

The hint is, you have the next turn or two to come up with stories to shape your advisor's personalities. People I've talked to, I would need the names of your advisors since I generally just popped them from my head.

Thanks.

And PLEASE send orders!
I don't want my first NES to die in the first three pages... heheh

Well good to know I was first to send my orders (bonus? ;) ). BTW, what were my advisors names? I forget (there were only 2).

the name of my advisors are depressing... one is named butt in chinese, one is named watermelon in chinese and the other one has a plain normal chinese name..
