I'd never heard of the term "Jumped the Shark" until this thread. Luckily, in the Explaining Foreign Terms Thread, Turner explained what "Jump the Shark" meant and kindly pointed me in the direction of the "Jump the Shark" Website

Obviously quite a few TV Series have Jumped the Shark, but then I think there are some Music Bands that are still ongoing who are also past their prime.

Hence this thread. Tell us the name of a band and the album, single, video, or time you think they "Jumped the Shark".

Metallica, when they cut their hair.

"We don't want to be like everyone else, we want to be individuals, so all of us cut out hair"

I couldn't care less that they cut it, it's the emphasis and the explenation given. That docu they made was toecurling as well. What a bunch of Prima Donnas who have forgotten what rock is all about :)

And I used to love em :(

Metallica was the first thing to come to mind here as well. Though, I could not care less about their hair. They sold out with the black album. That album was a dumbed down insult of an album and it jsut went to hell from there.
Their best album was lightning and master. After than it just went down hill ever so slowly. Then with the black album metallica ceased to be metallica anymore.

Some bands have to change with the times

What comes to mind for me are Nirvana, and System of a Down. I can't place the "shark jump" for Nirvana but System is defiently when their second last album came out(hyptnotized or memorized) Though for them it could also of been when they made it big with Toxicity and Chop Seuy

And now that I think about it of all the new bands, nothing is ever as good as their first album, and in many cases they're first albums are crap to. Seems like music exs are to busy throwing money at garage bands to get them to sign a contract, all on the off chance they're the next beatles or Elvis, that they don't even bother to actually listen to the music

On Metallica: Ok so they cut their hair, but so what? Music is not about hair anyway, it's about sound.
And yes they changed their musical direction with the Black album, but again so what? They are free to do what they want with their music. Metallica did not "die", they changed into something that their original fans might not have liked, but they got new fans. The new fans obviously had another taste of music, but that doesn't mean that the old fans taste is better.

The Black album was the surfboard over the shark; it was actually pretty cool, if a little 'formula'. Only the rare song afterwards has been any good. Compare that to the massive awesomeness of the Justice Album, the Master of Puppets album and the Ride the Lightning album. Each of those was mostly winners.

I don't like the drumming in the St. Anger album ... it sounds like they're bashing a garbage can lid.

My point is just that I wouldn't call bands who changed musically as jumping the shark. As far as I understand the expression is talking about the decrease of quality of an already exsistant form. So if Metallica had stayed the same way, and then become "bad" they would have jumped the shark.

Metallica has definately jumped the shark. Was I the only one that thought that 'some kind of monster' was more of a 'spinal tap' than anything else?

The only other artist that jumps to mind is Pharrel, his new tunes just blow!

The whole black album business is Spinal Tap. For me, ...Justice... was the beginning of the end.

I'll see if I can think of any more.

The Rolling Stones. They should have given it up after Tattoo You.

And I hate to say it, Rush... probably around the time the released Presto. Their output has been pretty dry since then.

Nirvana. Tragic rock deaths were soooo passé, even by the 80s.

Dillan jumped the shark when he crashed his bike. Maybe he was trying to jump a shark?

De La Soul is Dead. Everyone heard it and agreed.

Dam thats cold ;)

Metallica jumped the shark even before the Black album. They jumped the shark with the release of Justice, IMO.

Judas Priest jumped the shark with the release of Turbo.

NIN jumped the shark with the release of The Fragile.

The first band that comes to my mind is In Flames after Clayman...

Creed when that dork of a lead singer started holding up his arms like Jesus in every video

The day ZZtop, one of the few rock groups still composed of its original members after more than 35 years, shave their beards will be the great-grand-mother of all shark jumping.

Uhm, Metallica post Master of Puppets if you want to get technical, but its a matter of debate. I think most Metallica fans are leinient with and justice and black, and to some degree, limited parts of load and reload. Too bad St Anger was just trash on a large scale.

System of a Down jumped it on thier current Album pretty badly, imo
Nickleback wasnt that great to begin with but quite simply, thier second album
on was horrendous.
Creed, i could look past them being a christian rock band due to some good stuff, but thier second album was also lackluster and now theyre mass produced crap on a large scale.

Whoever said In Flames after clayman... agreed.
Nine Inch Nails hasnt been the same after the Downward Spiral, but as to whether they've jumped the shark is debateable.

For you Black Metal fans
Cradle Jumped the Shark after Cruelty and the beast, in a metallica sort of fashion, where thier subsequent stuff wasnt horrific, but it was trickling down the drain to where it is now, the land of suck and money.

Im done blabbing =)

TBH most bands "jump the shark" after the 2nd album :undecide:

I'd say after the third or fourth album. At that point, they've still got something to say, and at last the weight to be able to say it without interference. Before, they lack confidence and aren't able to resist the interference. Afterwards, apart from Dylan, and maybe Bruce, they just don't have anything else to say, to be cold, but honest.

There are always exceptions, though. Tom Waits. Damon Albarn with Blur and then Gorillaz. Nanci Griffith. Err, maybe someone else ?
