[NFP] Barbarian Clans Game Mode Discussion

I've yet to try it, but I would love to see a game like this:
  • Large map, max city-states, remove a few civs for extra room
  • Make sure Antananarivo and Nan Madol are in your city-states
  • Pick Pericles
  • Turn on Barbarian Clans
The goal is to see how high your Culture per turn can go before reaching the end of the game. Considering I regularly get some absurd Culture as Pericles, I'm curious to see how high it can get if you truly focus on maximizing it...

Damn. I think they oop'd the numbers. After the advice that I actually need at least 1 City-State so that Barbarians turn into City-States, it worked, but the game spawns 1 less City-State. The last Barb Camp had Disabled progression even though it had space to turn itself into City-State and Mitla was still to be founded. It was supposed to be the last one.

Another thing is when Barbs capture Settler, then get converted. It's funky watching Stockholm Settler escorted by Archer wandering around aimlessly. I guess he got struck by... The Stockholm Syndrome... Ha...

Honestly.. Firaxis devs should fix the synergy between City-States picker and this mode.

Every time i create my own small set of CS.. each of the self-generated Barbarian Clan Camps aren't capable of any progressive conversion as they should = broken gameplay feature.

Sooooo -- the CS picker must allocate for the missing gap (of some minimal potential stacking values) upon setup under every possible "options" we select.

This is my favorite game mode and one along with Industries that I will always keep on.

On course of a single game they just brought so much stuff to the game.
I was born next to a tribe that spammed eagle warriors! My first era was mostly a war against the tribe, and when I had money I hired eagle warriors or bribed the clan.

Hiring clans to attack my biggest rival - really brings out some proxy war to the game, love it. Would be cool to be able to put a spy into a barb tribe's camp too.

No way to make sure you start with any city-state if you are doing this.

Honestly, to me this sounds like a welcome fix to the problem of camps converting to city states too fast. :mischief:

Far too many CS and they're in silly places as well (in the polar regions). Something more akin to the Civ IV mechanic would be better.

The issue I have with this mode is that barbs disappear ironically. Maybe it is just my games but all barbarians are gone by like classical. This makes it hard for me to get the achievement of getting 5 ransoms in one game. Actually, I have yet to be able to do a ransom at all since they have never been successful in taking a unit and by the time I get one much less 5 they are gone.

Late game, there is no more barb spawn, which makes game so boring...

I mean the unintentional comedy amuses me.

I have literally given up on ALL the mods as they either don’t work or make the AI even more of a push over

I've only tinkered with the Barb mode a bit, but @Leugi posted on one of the Civ Discord channels that when also playing with the Heroes mode, Beowulf was able to be recruited by the Barbs. Additionally he could be hired as well. I don't recall anyone mentioning this quirk/bug yet.

*hastily scratches off any plans to play Barbarian Clans and Heroes and Legends modes together* :shifty:

I hate it, I hate it so much.
Barbarians were totally overpowered before this new useless "clans mode" and now they are even stronger because they come with special units.
And with more units. And they are even more aggressive than before. And they act "smart", for example by pillaging the holy site continously and preventing me from getting a religion.
In the future I will turn off that clans mode but I still have the problem that above level king no science or culture based strategy works because you can only build units, units, units.

I think you are the first person that thinks it makes it harder. They are easier now. they disappear after around 50 turns with no interaction and you can even bribe them not to attack you. I am curious what you are doing that is making you have a different experience than most.

Guess now we know which clan is based off of the Geats. :mischief:

Looks like @SirMediocrity got his wish.
