The number of people playing multiplayer is TINY compared to the number of people who play singleplayer. It occurred to me a contributing reason could be the fact that barbarians will spawn and move both at the beginning of the turn. This does not happen in singleplayer, and is the reason why you see so many "noobs" lose thier settler/worker. They don't see any barbs, and "bamf!" next turn the unit is captured.
Then the player disconnects, not wanting to waste their time without their initial settler.
And perhaps they never return... in public games I remember unusual player names, and so many of those unusual player names I never see again.
