So, my first civ experience was with Civ III, and it was pretty awesome. one of the problems i had with it though was that barbarians could show up in any age, even modern, and yet they never upgraded.

i think a good barb tech tree would've been:

Barbarian(ancient, default Civ III barbs) > bandit(medieval units) > outlaw(industrial units) > terrorist(modern units).
i also thought that the barbs should've been able to capture cities, or at least destroy them.

needless to say, i was delighted to discover that in Civ4 barbarians can not only upgrade, but act like any other civ! :goodjob:

now it's been awhile since i've played civ4 as my computer can't run it as well as i'd like, but i have been playing civIII recently and the old barb upgrading issue has come back to mind, so i must ask the question:

is it possible for barbarians to build nukes? if so, will they use them? :nuke:

I don't think it's possible, but I also thought it wasn't possible for barbarians to have frigates until I saw one.

I've read that it is possible.

I don't think they can get to Nukes. They can reach Flight and Fascism, which means that a barb city with access to Oil could build Fighters and Paratroopers.

Worst barb units i've come across is tank/destroyer. I usually play huge/ raging barbs, so i've encountered some oddities. I think I read somewhere on these boards from one of the Civ Gods that if the Manhatten Project is built, and Barbs are still on the map ( and have the rescources), they can indeed build nukes. I'll have to search, because now i'm paranoid. I'm currently in a ME game, and all of the map hasn't been discovered yet.

I'm playing a game where I'm the only civ on a Huge Terra map. So, the barbarians are still around in 2000-something. I'm half-hoping to find this out the hard way.

Also, barbarians can build Wonders I'm pretty sure. I'm almost positive I've seen a screenshot of a barbarian city with the Pyramids. So they could theoretically build the Manhattan Project themselves.

They can also found religions for what it's worth. They founded Buddhism and Hinduism in my game. Was around 1000 and 1200 AD when it happened.

Sometime I'll have to see what happens when you give barbarians nukes in Civ3 :nuke:. I'm not sure they'll actually use them even if they have them.

Out of curiosity (besides the sheer boredom) to see what would happen I've often tried plopping a barb city then giving them 7 nukes in 4000 BC via WB, on a standard size map (me+6 AIs = 7 players = 7 starting cities), and they just nuked everyone right the next turn, like they had visibility over the entire map and they hated everyone equally.

If someone's gonna let barbs build nukes I think a major overhaul of the barb AI would be deemed imperative.

Having made an Old Terra scenario in which Barbs start with most Wonders, I can tell you that whilst religion can spread normally from one Barb city to another, they don't generate GP. The bar fills up and then freezes at 100.

IIRC Barb ability to build wonders was removed at some patch, so that has been either screenshot from old version of the game or captured city.

maybe the barbs should change and upgrade over time, give them a whole tech tree of their own, and make it so they can continue to appear in any age(even when the entire map is explored and claimed), similar to my suggestion for civ III in my original post.

I've never seen it but that doesn't meant it can't happen.

Obviously they can't spawn them in though (I don't think they can fog-spawn higher than rifles?), they'd need the techs and the resource to build them.

OK, that would make sense. Barbs captured Xing Yang (sp?), which had rescources in it's city radius and started building tanks and destroyers. Took awhile for Mao to get his city back, and I was enjoying some nice promo's for my navy.

In BtS they specifically can not build ICBMs, or tactical nukes either (both disabled via setting their UU version to be "NONE" for the barbs).

Quite possible. I've been here awhile, but haven't followed all the changes in Civ4 over time.

Disappointing. Almost makes me want to play Warlords, just to be nuked by barbarians.

Seems strange that no unique unit -> no nukes, though.

I cant

They are not set to have no unique unit, that is done by not specifying one. But they do have one specified: they are specifically set to have the unique unit of type "NONE" for those two (and a bunch of others). There is no such "NONE" unit. You can't build a unit that does not exist. Therefore they can't build units of those unit classes.
