Bede04B-The Greasy Silver Spoon (C3C1.22)

In this variant with Agricultural opponents I'm not worried about crippling an Emperor AI. Buy 'em.

3000(0)-set Babylon to emphasize production

2950(1)-zzz

2900(2)-meet Maya, who are up masonry, pottery, WC, they have incense

IBT-Babylon barracks->spearman (to be changed)

2850(3)-zzz

IBT-learn alphabet

2800(4)-Maya has two workers for sale
sell alphabet to Maya for 2 workers
sell alphabet to Sumeria for WC, pottery, 35g
switch Babylon to bowman
We're already paying unit costs, so I start min research on writing and raise lux to 20%

2750(5)-Mayans learn the wheel, Aztecs learn masonry and the wheel, but they want too much for either

IBT-Babylon bowman->bowman

2710(6)-lower lux to 10%

2670(7)-Sumeria knows mysticism, they want too much for it

2630(8)-zzz

IBT-Babylon bowman->bowman

2590(9)-Celts know the wheel, mysticism; Sumeria knows the wheel
buy mysticism from Celts for alphabet, 3g
It appears Maya do not know everybody, while Aztecs do
buy masonry and the wheel from Maya for mysticism, 7g

2550(10)-Forgot to clear the Aztecs' and Celts' pockets, Aztecs know mysticism, Celts know masonry

Notes: At size 5 Babylon can produce 10spt (once the grassland is mined)

Here is the save.

Ok. I will play tomorrow evening so people have the chance to comment.

Let's try to see how this works out:
  • CivAssist say mas & alpha are worth 70g & 87g. I will sell it if the civs that do not know it have around 40g & 50g.
  • At min research & lux, we are at +4gpt. In my 10 turns, Babylon should get to size 6 and with lux increasing, I guess we should get an extra +2gpt. About 4 bowman should be built, bringing our net gpt to +2. Hum. We could consider disbanding a few warriors. If I see that I can finish a bowman 1t earlier by disbanding the warrior in garrison, I will do it.
  • Try to find the Incas. I am guessing they are SE.
  • Explore the Celts borders.

Anything I should adjust because of the variant?

@fbouthil,

Sounds like a plan.

As bowmen come on line, move them toward the Celts. Be alert for opportunities to colonize luxuries.

If you see an opportunity to capture a town with bows, don't worry about the early GA. I think we are going to need the cash and shields to make a push on an exapnding neighbor.

2550BC (preturn)
As an effort to see if we can make a nearby colony, I take a bowman to explore the area around Babylon.
IBT
Celts are starting the Oracle. Cool! Garrison will not increase then.
Maya learn IW. I will check every turn to see if it becomes affordable.
2510BC (1)
Babylon has increased size; lux to 20%.
IBT
Babylon: bowman->bowman

Jump on the occasion; disband a warrior to get bowman in 2t instead of 3t.

Actually, I should have let the next player decide if he wanted to disband the warrior or not, but I made a mistake in my timeline and thought I was on turn 9. IW and HR are known by one civ each, but are not tradable yet.

A bowman is exploring the northern border of the Celts. 3 bowman are following him in case an opportunity arises. I think we will need around 8 bowman to conquer their capital.

Just so everyone knows, my workload at work has increased significantly. I will have reduced time for the internet. I will be checking in each evening.

got it and will play tomorrow

Pre-flight: Perfect

IBT, Sumerians are building pyramids.

T1. 2110BC. Keep bowmen moving towards Celts. Warriors explore, workers finished the road->mine.

T2. 2070BC. Babylon bow->bow. stilll nobody wants to trade. Scouting warrior found silks, but far far away from home.
Entered hill near entremont. It's pop is only 4 and it's building oracle. 3 Warriors are parked nearby.

T3. 2030BC. zzzz
T4. 1990BC zzzz

T5. 1950BC. Babylong grows in size. Lux up 30%. we have 0 income. Nobody wants to trade, and Mayans have writing now.
Sold Alphabet to Monty for 24 gold, all he had. His treasury never grew in past 5 turns.

T6. 1910BC. zzzz

T7 1870BC. Babylon bow-temple in 3 turns. Ok, You can hate me, but i am taking a risk and declare on Celts, 4 Bowmen enter Celts land near their capital.

T8 1830BC
Celts Warrior vs Our warrior -> 1hp Our warrior.
Bow vs spear - 1hp Bow. We are officially in golden age.
Bow vs spear - 2 hp bow and we capture Entremont. We also capture 2 slaves.
There are 2 Celts warriors nearby to worry about next turn.
Lux down to 20%

IBT. Celts warriors move to the hill. Mayans are building Pyramid

T9 1790BC.
Vet Bow vs Elite Warrior - 1hp Bow.
Vet Bow vs Reg Warrior - 4hp Bow
Sumeria has mathematic. Adding a second city helped us to get our income to +7gpt. Everybody will sell us everything but math. I can do some trading around, but since it is my last turn, I will let the team to discuss and the next player to decide.

T10 1750AD. Bab. temple->bow. Resistanse in Entremont has ended. Workers just finished improvement, I haven't dispatched them yet. Bowmen are moving towards Lugdunum, another Celts city we can take over. Science slider on 0%. I hired a scientist in Entremont instead of keeping there a clown.

Got it.

I had to use Webster dictionary to figure out what word "pavane" means :lol:

as for the tech trading goes, since we don't have any horse sources close by, we probably should prioritize IW and Writing and leave HB alone for the moment being.
Would be nice to get math from Sumerians but they refuse any trading.

Play a game with Bede, increase your vocabulary......:D

Fairly quiet ten turns. Put the arm on the Celts for all the tech we were missing after the population of Lugdunum shrank to one and the borders had not expanded. There is a Celt settler pair heading south I think. We also got Alesia in the deal. Then put the heat on Philosophy and took Literature as the bonus and started the Great Library in Babylon. After consideration I decided that waiting for the other guys to build the Library so we could take it away was not really smart. WE have more military then we can comfortably support until we can take some more towns and our economy will be crippled by corruption, so spending on science is probably not in the cards.

Then the Aztecs came demanding Mathematics and I told him to stuff it and Monte answered "Here's a spear in your ear!" So we are at war with the Aztecs, at peace with the Celts, and have the technology parity.

There is an iron colony outside the borders of Babylon covered by a bow and I am vectoring the worker force towards the incense.

The two captured towns are building temples for some cheap culture.

Research is set at minimum for Currency, No beakers invested, so change if it apppears advisable. Minimum was chosen to get some cash for a warrior-sword upgrade.

dmanakho - we have a long standing tradition in any game with Bede to quote from the dictionary all new words that we learn from him so that the whole team can expand their vocabulary. :D

Webster's said:
pa·vane also pa·van Pronunciation Key (p-vän, -vn)
n.
1. A slow, stately court dance of the 16th and 17th centuries, usually in duple meter.

2. A stately and formal Spanish dance for which full state costume is worn; -- so called from the resemblance of its movements to those of the peacock.

BTW - I have the game. This one is a waltz. One of the few gentlemanly things I learned at the Academy.

Wow! We already have 3 cities! You guys rock! :rockon:

I was thinking that if everything went well, we would not have only slaves at some time, but I did not realize it would be so soon!

BTW, keeping the Celts alive is a good idea. Since we cannot build cities ourselves, having a weak neighbour to build some for us is great!

I suggest to take the bowman in Entremont with the 3 other next to it and the one half way to Technotitlan and go take that city. One of the bowman near Alesia can stay in Entremont for defense soon enough. Technotitlan would give us horses.

BTW, we should not wait for technotitlan to finish the pyramids before capturing it. It will never finish in time: it is size 2 while Ur is size 7. My bet on who will finish the pyramids first is on the Sumerians.

My thoughts, while not exact, at least very close.

Pre-flight – Everything looks good. We’re at war of course. We need to find the Inca.

Early - Spot an Aztec settler pair heading towards Babylon. Upgrade a warrior. The settler pair plants a nice city, close to Babylon. We can ask for that at the peace table.
Entremont: temple=>barracks
Kills: A Jag and an archer
Losses: A bowman.

Middle – Kills: Reg warrior, an archerm, and a Jag.
Upgrade a second sword and they head towards the front.
Giglamesh has polytheism and MM and he wants to trade. We’ll get them for free with the GL, so I don’t trade.

End - Monty will talk, straight up peace. We spot Inca lands and meet them. They don’t know the alphabet and have 43G. Our GA ends.
Kills: a spear in the Aztec capitol.
March on Texcoco. We killa spear and lose a Bowman.
The Sumerians must be hurting for cash, cause an Endiku just disappeared.

After Action – We want Monty to feel much pain so he’ll give us that city near Babylon to us for peace. There’s one spear in Texcoco, I’d let it autoraze. March on the Aztec capitol with our new swords and Bowmen from the south.
