There are too many of these new fantasy movies coming out, and none of them recapture the awesomeness of older movies. They just don't make them like this anymore:

Krull

Hawk the Slayer

In case anyone's confused, don't take my first post too seriously.

It does look horrid. If you're gonna make a animated movie why even bother with the high priced actors. They could have cut that cost out and spent more on the effects.

It's not animated that's why.

It's still acted but just that their appearances will have a CGI effect around them so it'll look like they're animated.

Frankly, I think this is a good idea because it make the actors and the film appear into the realms of fantasy and mythology rather than reality.

I mean look at this body.

Although that's not Ray Winstone's body. It's some male model's. Only the head is his.

But the basic idea is to make them transcend the ordinary and into the realm of heroes and legends.

My guess is that Neil Gaiman being the screenwriter will have a lot to do with how the movie turns out. I suspect that, rather than attempt to faithfully follow the epic, he instead wrenches it away in a very definite direction in order to tell an interesting story. The CGI-heavy nature of the movie is owing to Gaiman's mastery of the graphic-novel form-- probably the aim is surreal rather than realist.

the thing that strikes me as stupid is the fact that you are recreating the actual people as animated characters that look exactly the same in some cases. If angelina jolie is going to be animated why does she have to be almost a replica?

edit: even if it is motion capture i still think it's stupid.

Because it is stupid. It'll be just another disaster like "300". Screw the effects, animation and that stuff.

300 wasnt a disaster.
No idea. But it was certainly dreadful. Beowulf looks interesting.

Btw, a review i've read seems to imply that you Yanks often have to read Beowulf at school, which seems odd. Is this true?

Wasnt when I was a kid...but that was a long time ago.

I read it, but it wasn't required. I got extra credit for reading it because my Literature teacher and I shared the same cultural heritage.

I am probably not going to see it, just because I feel that Hollywood is going to butcher a thousand year old cultural legend. Seeing as I am descended from the culture from which the legend of Beowulf comes, I don't think I can take it if they butcher the legend just to make it more appealing to the masses.

I am going to have to disagree with the OP...I think the movie looks pretty darn good and I am looking forward to seeing it this weekend.

We have something we agree on. This movie has a great cast, good director and has a big budget for this type of movie. I want to see it.

They're most definitely going to butcher the original legend, just like the "300". Yes, I realize that "300" was based on a graphic novel, and not on historical events, but I just didn't like it. And frankly, it was for that reason.

I've seen Krull three times or so(that is an achievement). My favorite scene is just after they enter the castle of the villain, and they are being shot at. Then the leader of the bandits crosses the passageway by trying to roll on the ground in a kung fu-way. But he only gets half way and has to get on his feet and run to rest of the way to the wall. Further to the end, when the castle collapses, our heroes run for the exit and cross a big stone bridge. Suddenly for no reason they stop, a huge part of the bridge directly BEHIND them falls down, and they continue running.

I'm not sure if all that made sense but it's a fantastic movie.

Krull was always in HBO's rotation when I was a kid.

A couple months ago, Krull happened to be on and I watched, for the sake of nostalgia, if nothing else.

My sister walked into an adjacent room and heard the music, and asked me if I was watching Krull. I couldn't believe it. This is my sister we're talking about.

So Krull has had a lasting effect on at least someone.

And Beowulf looks HORRID.
