Berserks01 - Space Monkies

Well, to begin with, I did a little shifting around. I looked at the tactical and noticed the following:

1) a shitload of troops pounding on Beijing
2) very few defenders left to hold Beijing
3) a modest stack outside Xian (gold city)
4) Pyramids sans representation
5) Mao wanting to give us all sorts of crappy stuff for peace

First step. Swap civics. I changed us into Representation and Caste System, a good match. I also hired tons of scientists in all of our cities.

repandcaste0000.jpg

This is appropriate, as we're losing the tech race.

notadvanced0000.jpg

Since we want to monkey into space, we ought to be winning this sooner rather than later. Anyhow, I wanted to take a few more turns of war to get more troops to Xian. However, after pressing enter, and losing three more defenders (two?), we had this situation at Beijing.

beigingdefense0000.jpg

Well, this forced my hand. I took Xian with suboptimal force. A longbow, a horse archer, and a pikeman were taken by two maces and two trebs.

xiantaken0000.jpg

Xian is ours. (Note: that's eight cities. Since we have only four bananas, that's our cap.) Next step, take peace at whatever Mao wants before he takes Beijing.

peace0000.jpg

To be continued...

Thus begins the builder phase of my set. I set most of our builds to Universities, mixed in with the occasional courthouse or theater. I also made a bunch of trades.

Russian happy for Zulu health.

We got DR and 500 gold for Nationalism from Peter

drand500fornationalism0000.jpg

Guilds and 360 gold for Nationalism via Mali

guilds360nationalism.jpg

Then he turned right around and offered us banking.

And some more happy.

I didn't fear trading Nationalism, as the Taj was now ours.

Near the end, Mrs. Of Arc paid us a visit, so I turned her Taoist and she made us the Dai Miao. We need to spam some Taoist missionaries. Only two cities are Taoist.

daimiao0000.jpg

Next, I look at our cities and I want to specialize them. For instance, take Banana Three

gpfarm0000.jpg

This screams GP farm to me. I almost built the National Epic here (and I think we should), but look at all the damned cottages! We have entirely too many cottages and entirely too few farms. With Representation and Caste System, we ought to set our sights on fat and nerdy. To facilitate, I posted a map for getting water to B3.

farmchain0000.jpg

Keep in mind, we can't chop anymore (have we chopped too much already?), but we should have 13 farms within the next 50 turns, IMO.

Keep in mind, we can't chop anymore (have we chopped too much already?)...
No, we should be within our cap still. I coun't 3 forests, so we're ok, but not more chopping is correct.

Good turns, btw (notice the off-hand comment ;) )

Negy, show us how you swing!!!

I think it is better to chainfarm this way than to destroy a cottage and a precious forest

monkies-chainfarm.jpg

All our banana cities are lack of production ... but we can only build space parts in them. These forests will be too precious to waste for chainfarming.

Now, abt changing Banana Three into a GP farm ... I would really reconsider that decision. Normally I would first to agree, seeing I value farms more than cottages. However, in this situation, I am not so sure. Reasons: (1) it is pretty late, with so many cottages maturing; (2) we only have 3 cities eligible for space parts building, turning one of them into a GP-farm isn't too smart; (3) there is also Beijing which could pass as a GP-Farm.

I am not against it, I am just asking people to rethink. What we can do is convert those hamlets into farms first. Ultimately, though, we are likely to change everything into workshops for banana3 when we are ready to build space parts.

--

I can play today if I'm up. A clear roster would be fine anyway.
I agree with Fox, we should focus on production in Banana cities ... later. But now we need science either via specialists or via commerce.

Oopsss  ... here's the roster.

Roster
GreyFox – swing for money
Berserks01 – what branch are you on?
Rex Tyrannus – swung towards people
Negyvenketto – show us how you swing
Lucky 1972 – aiming for another vine

I agree with Fox to a degree. We're gonna need some workshops to help with production in those banana tree cities, so some farms will be necessary. Also, a few of those cottages were just built so it wouldn't be too bad.

Here we go. I had a peaceful builder turnset.
Peter made an attempt to drag us into war, but I disappointed him.
monkeys27.JPG

We have monopoly on Liberalism, Astronomy, Repl.Parts. Only Hannibal knows Education. Should we trade it for Gunpowder with Peter and for money with others? I set the research tentatively to Sci.Meth. (no turns invested). Is it OK?
monkeys28.JPG

Built the irrigation chain to Banana3 as Fox suggested. I fired lots of scientists (sorry Rex) to accelerate building of Univs, Observatories and Banks. Otherwise it could have been a waste of hammers as we were in Golden Age. They can be hired again soon.

The save

I think the firing of specialists in golden age is a good and smart move .. but next player should hire them back.

Before going into SciMeth, let's ensure we have ample monasteries for our shrines first.

I see no rush in trading for gunpowder .... unless we are worried abt an attack on us.

Re the war wth Mali ... actually, we could declare if we want to ... Gao is another banana city ... :mischief: ... it will give us the leeway for another non-banana city near us. But it is pretty far, and likely to be culturally deprived and opressed if we do capture it ... so nah, just thinking out loud.

In the other news, I'm beginning my 16 hrs flight to the Golden State in less than 4 hrs and that marks the start of my 2-weeks auto-skip period. But I can most probably still play ... so don't be too got-it-happy, Berserks!

--

Yes. I agree with the golden age specialist lay-off. I hired the scientists on my first turn, but the GA started on my eighth (I think). I really just forgot to MM after Taj. I'd say no to a war with anyone. We have a large enough empire to space race and any military build-up or unhappiness only hampers our goals.

Build some good state-of-the-era defenders (about three per city) and we should be fine.

Quiet turnset. I set research to Economics to give us time to build some more Monasteries. Then we go on with Sci Met (Peter gets it 2 turns ahead of us). We have Tao Monasteries in all our 4 Taoist cities, and Hindu ones in all cities but Yue Chi. We are researching Physics, I think we have a shot on the GS, since we just got a GS to help.

Maybe we don`t need gunpowder, but Mansa`s money is yummy... I wait one turn but can`t help myself and trade away Education for Gunpowder, a lot of money and some good diplo bonuses:

0tradePeter.jpg

We get +2 with Peter, he gets to pleased, but then comes back to cautious.

2tradeMansa.jpg

3tradeGK.jpg

This was more for the diplo bonus, although the money is fine. we get +2. I should have done the same with JC, but it was only 80 gold.... He did get Education next turn, so it was a bad decision. Maybe I should have even gifted it to Mao too, I am not sure.

Han declares on MM, Versailles is built, and Yakutsky is captured, or at least the log says so:

6log.jpg

In fact, something odd happened: my computer hanged on turn 5 or so, I had to load the autosave file, and fortunately it was from turn 4, right after the resources trades I am about to report. But Yakutsky was still Russian!! I can`t explain this, but played on.

On turn 3 I see JC has a lot of money and is the only one without banking.

8tradeJC_bank_money.jpg

I also noticed GK with 11gpt to spare. I renegotiate some current deals to be able to give him what he wants. Then I realized we have our own sugar now, and renegotiate some more.

9res_trade.jpg

Replaced the former deal (spices, IIRC) with this.

10res_trade.jpg

+1 gpt

11res_trade.jpg

I get the money because I don`t know for how long it will be available, but we could use the wheat as well. We will have spare gold in less than 10 turns, then we can trade it for the wheat (or we can trade our gold sooner and wait for the other one, dealing with the happy problems in between).

Finally, we cancel the deals with JC, gaining 1 spices back and getting +2 gpt for our bananas:
12res_trade.jpg

Foreign income:
13financial.jpg

Economics comes in and we revolt to Free Market:
14revolt.jpg

I did not do the Math to compare this with Mercantilism (good match with representation), but it is certainly better then decentralization and it will only get better with time (unless everybody else goes Mercantilism, of course).

Peace:
15peace.jpg

Peter comes with an offer, refused for now:
17offer_from_Peter.jpg

Hannibal wants some help with his war.... No thanks.
19refuse_Han.jpg

GK joins the fun against MM. Here's his stack:
21GK_troops.jpg

Current tech table:
23techtable.jpg

MM is the only one who doesn`t have gunpowder and PP, but he wants that and a lot of money for MT, so I left that alone for now. Built and started some lumbermills and postponed the decision about NE, but it`s getting awfully late for that. It could be Beijing, but I think I still prefer B3 (we don`t need to replace all the cottages, we can leave the 2 or 3 most mature ones).

The save is attached.

Played last night, but photobucket having "short" maintenance (which turns out to be from at least 10~12pm PST), hence the report this morning.

First order of business is to fire some artists ... why are people obsess with artists. They are the last specialist I want, especially when a city is not being oppressed culturally. I let one artist remains in Beijing, while converting one to engineer. Look, this city has Great Wall, Pyramids, Hanging Gardens. 2 of which gives Great Engineer points which absolutely tasty, since we aren't great production-wise. With that mind, I started the Nat Epic there. Yeah, controversial decision, but someone has to make the decision. Else it is only gonna to get later and later. For that, we would most likely want to switch to Pacifism the next time we switch civics.

Next, is to redeploy troops. Our main forces are all in the south, with the northern cities only having a sword and an Impi. I wouldn't feel save swinging on a tree at night with that, esp when our northern neighbor is GK.

Finally (before hitting enter, that is), I dial Mansa up. We may not want to war with him (more on that later), but we still want his money.

monkie-AD1600-mansa.jpg

The remaining of my turnset is a simple production and workers-actions clicking turns. I did burn the scientist to get us Physics ...

monkie-AD1615-lightbulb.jpg

... which gives us yet another scientist.

monkie-AD1620-pyhics.jpg

Damned, I just thought I finally found a good way of disposing him ... and now he is revived. Next monkie's problem. He can learn us 1800+ beakers of chemistry, but that's can be traded for, me think.

As shown, there are 2 Uraniums, but only one is within our city's BFC (Xi-An).

Interestingly, Mao has switched allegiance, is now a Pet Dog of GK.

monkir-AD1630-vassal.jpg

Poor Mansa is now facing yet one more nemesis. That should finish him, I think. I think we should also declare on Mansa, just a phony war will do. All we want is to improve relations.

Why?

We are at WFYABTA limit with all our Pleased neighbors except Peter. We could of-course research all the techs ourselves, but trading techs (not selling) would help us more than the AI.

Speaking of trading, I open borders with Peter (he is not in Mercantilism, so we should open borders to gain trade routes).

montie-AD1615-ob-peter.jpg

I have also upgraded some trades.

monkie-AD1640-trades.jpg

I have also spammed a few missionaries. We have both shrines, so feel to spread Hindu/Taoism a little. But careful, don't spread to any neighbor civs border cities ... we don't want to help them culturally expand towards us.

We should also discuss where to build the Globe, Hermitage, and perhaps Heroic Epic. We definitely want to reserve Ironworks for one of the three Banana cities, and the Wall Street for one of the holy city (likely the Hindu one), so that should be considered. We could probably skip Forbidden Palace.

  • Globe, I suggest Banana One.
  • Hermitage, I suggest BeiJing.
  • Heroic Epic, I suggest one of none Banana city (either the northeast city or Northwest city).
