Best and worst national anthem

Hey Eli, the Russian anthem reminded me of Final Fantasy game I played on super nintendo years ago! :)

Hmmm .. I always disliked the US national anthem. It's almost impossible to sing, the lyrics are really only stirring during wartime, and... it's a song about a flag, basically, not a country.

Especailly sad becasue there are lots of other really good patriotic songs about the USA . . I always like "America the Beautiful" as the unofficial anthem.

Canada's is good, too (especially the Geddy Lee version) and the Philipines anthem is also pretty nice.

Love the Brits - - but hate "God Save the Queen"

(Except, of course, for the Sex Pistols version)

It's not very national, but how about the Internationale? That's a good one. I have an actual mp3 of the Red Army choir singing it (In Russian of course) if anyone want's it.

The Internationale was composed in the late 19th century by Frenchmen and the song rule (not all of the lyrics, but the "music" is really nice)

oh... I didn't know changed back to the old anthem with different lyrics. Well that is in my opinion a great decision made by the Russian government. The pseudo-anthem they tried to insert after the USSR period was so uninspiring, no doubt the country experiences difficult times...
Seriously I really think the USSR/Russian anthem is a great piece of work.

Well, America's anthem is #1 in my book, but the old USSR anthem is pretty good, instrumentally. Of course, it is a patriotic march tune, designed to work well in military formations. The heavy down beat sets the moment of left heel strike, and large formations marching the stiff leg step to a rousing rendition is pretty cool ;).

PS, If you've seen "Red Dawn", "Hunt for Red October", or "The Russia House", you've heard a much better rendition.

I don't really know many national anthems, just the US, Canada, and the UK. I like the American national anthem, partly because of how difficult it is to sing. That way its challenging for singers and something they have to work toward, and when you hear it done right its very inspiring. One thing that a lot of people don't know is that each state in the US has its own anthem. Most of them are pretty bad, which is why they are mostly unknown.

Hey Starlifter, are you going to get to update your name to "Globemaster" anytime soon, or are they keeping you in the old C-141s? I thought they were updating McChord's (which is where I assume you are) stock.

I've just been discussing various options this week. They don't need me for C-141's (which is OK by me). I was talking with some friends who are in Charleston, SC, too. Everything will probably start to settle out (where/what the Reserve needs help with) within a few weeks, maybe sooner. At any rate, it'll be several months of retraining for the Globemaster III. Personally, I think the name of Starlifter was a good name... but I guess they could not name the C-17 the Starlifter II, since the airframe is still active. :)

Our national anthem's lyrics are a horrid warmongering cry to bloodshed and it shames me to have sung it once.

But then again maybe that's understandable (although not justifiable) because it was written when the french invaded us in the 1860's and, in Mexico, there had been nothing but internal and external war during the preceding 5 decades ... Anyway it's horrible. Even today the middle two parts aren't sung in grade schools because they are too bloody.
the music isn't that bad though.

In order:

1:Ukrainian (my god this is as good as mozart "allaturca")
2;CCCP not russia
3:Italian if you want to heard it just listen the next f1 GP
4:british
5:france (vive la marseillaise!!!)

I have no opinion on best. The worst is my own. And there are lot of people in Britain who agree with me.

There were moves afoot to get it changed. Nothing has come of it yet. Suitable alternatives have included "I vow to thee my country" to the theme from Gustav Holst's "Jupiter" (Planet Suite), and - possibly the favourite - "Land of Hope and Glory" to the theme from Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" marches.

Until then... :(

I remember at a Scotland v England football match, the Scottish crowd booed 'God Save the Queen.' This was offensive to the English, but I always remember what the commentator said.

"That is a terrible booing of their own national anthem."

Part of Britain or not, Scotland's anthem is 'Flower of Scotland,' not 'God Save the Queen!'

I always find it funny how the national anthems harmonize with the country it belongs to:
England: it's simply stiff. Perfect match! :D :p
Netherlands: serious and characterless.
Germany: serious and dull.
France: proud making and nationalistic.
Italy: cheery and not serious.
Russia/USSR: bombastic and very very proud making.
Spain: can't remember, but it also had a typical Spanish character.

The USA is hard to tell: I don't really like the anthem; it's a bit meaningless. Perhaps it does belong to the USA in that case, because all Americans are proud that they have diverse people and not a own type of people. (This can be taking positive as well as negative. ;))

Anyway: my favorites are the Russian and the Italian anthems.

Even though I'm an American, I've always thought the Canadian National Anthem was better than the U.S. National Anthem. The U.S. National Anthem is OK, but it's probably the worst performed of all National Anthems what with pop artists trying to impose their musical styles on it.

A few others here like the Italian National Anthem. The first part of it is fine, but then just when you think its done, it starts up into another section. It's simply too long.

Huitzilopochtli, you're right.... your national anthem in Mexico is apalling!!! Why doesn't Mexico, or its citizens change it? Almost anything would be an improvement!! If nothing else, it is totally out of step two centuries later!
