I watched this movie today. Now, as a caveat, I think it should just be accepted that it is incredibly hard to make an excellent sci-fi film. That's why there are so few of them. The rest are 'meh' with an upgrade to 'ehn' because we like sci-fi.

I liked this film. Now, second caveat, I really, really, really liked War of the Worlds (the book). It's aged well, and it's gripping. This movie is heavily like WotW, normal blokes getting blindsided by an alien invasion. And, it was pretty good.

There's a Jean Claude van Damme cameo, but it's completely non-offensive, he does just fine. And, I get what the director was going for with lens flares. He uses lens flares to augment the confusion when the characters are confused. It's annoying, but I get it. I don't agree, but they're way less annoying once you realize the intent. The lens flares are only in some scenes, the majority of the movie doesn't have them.

It's a 3/5 movie. 4/5 because it's sci-fi and I like sci-fi. It's no District 9, but it's better than the many others, by a wide margin.

Day After Tomorrow was pretty nice, although imo Oblivion is still Cruise's best scifi film.

Ex Machina apparently went for minimal explanations/background, and was nice but quite low-budget.

See, now we can't be friends. Event Horizon is one of my favorites. Of course I'm also the kind of guy that actually thought Battlefield Earth wasn't all that bad so I don't know how seriously my opinion can be taken.

Yeah, Jim Carrey is one of those actors that grates on a lot of people's nerves. Still, I thought Eternal Sunshine was the least JimCarreyish performance I've seen from him.
