Vote for you favorite unit.

oops... forgot Paratroopers, and Alpine Troopers

I'll go with howizters..Big attack numbers and ignore city walls.Pretty flukey to beat one.Even a vet mech on good terrain will/should lose.

oh ya..honorable mention to the spy unit. The most versatile unit in the game.

The best I think are vet spies, first the survivability of one, second the useful sabotage unit option, and third the discount on city bribing.

Outside of spies, stealth fighters. Maybe paratroopers if I'm playing on lots of islands.

I enjoy spies and especially partisans for cheaply and cruelly weakening other civs. The howitzer is my favorite outright military unit.

Give me stealths and spies, and I'll take a civ. Howies are a close 2nd to Stealth Fighters, and superior in some situations. :D

Howitzers can defeat any unit in the game on the offensive, and defensively it even has a certain power. I go for the Howitzer - superior to any other units.

I like Howitizers with Stealth Fighters a very close second. Spies are the best unit, but hardly a "high tech" one. Even through they become available in the "high tech" era, ye ole advances chart lists them as "ancient military" units.....:)

When I'm at war with other civs, I prefer the use of spies : it's quicker, it's cheaper (in terms of shields or numbers or units lost) and when you have the enemy city less improvements are destroyed. Furthermore you already have units inside to defend it.
:)
Since spies are not in the poll, I voted for the Mech. Inf, due to its good defence numbers. But it's because I don't like war : takes time, shields to create new troops, causes unhappiness, etc. Usually, when another civ declares war, I have a spy not too far too make them regret their act, and as soon as I'm in one of their cities, they offer peace.
:crazyeye:

The sentiments here, and I am in agreement with them, seem to be that several of the modern units work well together. Also, can matter as to what your objective is: (1) capture an enemy city, (2) penetrate the enemy lines, (3) defeat a fortified enemy unit, (4) get to the front fast, etc. These factors make it difficult to choose just one BEST unit.

Nevertheless, I voted for Stealth Bombers, although I intended to vote for Stealth Fighters. Speed, multiple attacks, retreat.

However, my general Civ2 strategy is to beat the AI before the introduction of nuclear weapons :nuke: , so sadly I don't usually get to use many of these units!

Some of my own games, Howies alone pretty much do the brunt of he work... and some games, Stealth Fighters. Most of the time, both. If the AI has Vet Mech Inf, particularly on defensible terrain (or with SAMs), the Howies are really the best option if I had to choose one. If the AI has Riflemen and some Vet Alpines, Vet SFs usually get to swarm the AI (SFs can repair sooner, since they can return to an Airport city on the same turn as attacking). I also use SFs to block partisan formation, particularly on difficult terrain, en route.

Best war units in order:
1) Engineer (got to be able to produce the troops to beat the hell out of the enemy and also to be able to get there on RRs),
2) Freight (ideal for the rushing of all kinds of troops and for letting:
3) Spies buy cities. :D)
4) Stealth Fighter - I'd never bother attacking with one, especially as they can't occupy cities, but I hate partisans!!!)
5) Howitzers - do the brunt of the destruction over the city walls but need not be followed by particularly strong defensive units because the war will have moved on from these cities by then. I only need a couple of mechs for the frontline cities if I can't finish the civ off in a single turn.
6) Transports and Carriers to get 1,3,4 and 5 across, and
7) Appropriately strong ships to protect them (appropriate to the strength of the enemy of course. :)).

1. Spy to knock out SAM Battery
2. Stealth Fighter to engage enemy fighters
3. Stealth Bombers (especially on islands) and Howitzers to knock out infantry and armors
4. Mech Inf or Paratroopers to conquer and defend
5. Armors to destroy partisans

All these combined make a real Blitzkrieg!

Stealth Fighters. One likes employing "ayr paarr" :D

Honourable mention to Carriers, when on big ocean worlds, as they can transport hordes of the aforesaid fighters.

Veteran Battleships employed in the right circumstances are nice. :)
